That I agree with.

But on a system with 128 MB of RAM or low RAM, it takes Windows a considerable ammount of time to allocate a games prog primary storage AS WELL as keep some of the unused background processes in RAM. AS an experiment I kept IIS server alive while running a game. The game didn't require IIS to function though IIS was still taking up 13, 592 K of RAM, aftur flushing IIS into paging it left only 2 K in memory. At the same time, because I wasn't using IIS the OS had no reason to access IIS from paging. This is true with a lot of the other background processes that contribute nothing to gaming and take up no CPU time.

I've tried doing it manual. I managed to get my memory down to about 150mb. With 35 tasks running in XP. thought this was pretty good considering i ushaully have about 45 tasks running and using at least 250mb of RAM. The beta program seemed to do just a good a job. mind you i also turned of services that wernt needed according to SiSoft Sandra.

35 - 45 tasks?!?!?!? Whoa! On a normal everyday basis I'm only running between 14 - 17 tasks, and no more than that. A long time ago I printed out the services list from Black Viper's site (link mentioned above) and I was able to shut down a TON of services that did nothing more than sit in the background and look pretty. My system has been running like butter ever since. However I am always looking to tweak further, therefore I am anxious/curious to see what these guys come up with.

Good luck to you both.

Hey guys.

Nice discussion going on here. I just have some newb questions:

1) Will the program being made in any way affect my firewall protection, or will i be able to decide whether or not i want to close this service?

2) How will this thing work with online games like CS?

3) When will it be out; I?ve just installed XP Pro, and suddenly my internet games, and many of my other applications, seems to run like crap.

Hope some of you guys will have the patience to answer my undoubtedly stupid questions.

Anyways, i really had a good time reading the thread.

Looking forward to see some action.

to quote flyinvr6 "35 - 45 tasks?!?!?!? Whoa!"

I seem to be running a few more task then he does, but my task list includes a firewall, anti virus, mbm5, rage3d tweaker, proxomitron, and soundstrom ctrl panel, plus all of the tasks XP loads. After the system loads I am using only ~130Mb of RAM (giving me 870Mb spare to play with).

I suggest a quick trip to www.blkviper.com and having a look thru his XP services list.

Sorry for the late reply guys. It looks like encryption has discontinued his development but mine is still on track and I'll have it ready for download really soon.

As you already know the object of the little tool is to strip XP right down it its core for gaming without causing you to manually disbale half your system. I use quite a lot of server software so I need majority of the services running, but not while gaming. Thats why this tool helps because I shutdown the services I don't need, then when finished just turn them back on automatically.

So far I'm adding a lot of customisation and other bits and bobs to get it running smooth as possible. So in regards to the questions that were posed, you will be able to select the settings, this includes leaving some of them on.
