Sandra Bullock signs up for Despicable Me spin-off

Recommended Posts

Sandra Bullock may be an American Sweetheart, but according to Deadline she?s set to portray a villain in Minions, the recently announced Despicable Me spin-off. Bullock will voice Scarlet Overkill, an apt name for a character who is hell-bent on world domination.

The adorable yellow minions first hit our screens in 2010 with the surprise blockbuster Despicable Me which starred Steve Carell as Gru, a criminal mastermind who adopts three orphan girls.

Deadline have also released the synopsis for the spin-off movie:

This spinoff establishes that Minions have existed since the beginning of time, in service of history?s most ambitiously evil villains. Through their lovable ineptitude, Minions have managed to thwart and ultimately destroy all of those bad guys. This story picks up in the 1960s, before they hench-ed for Gru. With no more super-villains to serve, the Minions fall into a collective depression and three of them set out to seek a new evil master. They wind up at a villain convention, where they compete for the right to be henchmen for Scarlet Overkill, whose Audrey Hepburn-like high style appearance belies her world domination ambition and her aspirations to become the world?s first female super-villain.

The Minions are hilarious and have arguably become the main selling point of the Despicable Me franchise. The challenge for Universal Pictures / Illumination Entertainment will be to develop a narrative that capitalizes on their popularity but doesn?t undermine their comedic impact. It will likely be a very visual film that is not totally reliant on dialogue to drive the plot, which will be an acknowledgement of the Minions? comedic credentials.

This announcement also puts added pressure on the forthcoming sequel, Despicable Me 2, which will now have to exceed lofty expectations to justify this spin-off movie being green-lit. However, early trailers have been excellent and suggest that it will be a sure-fire hit.

Minions will be a 3D CGI animated comedy and is due for release on December 19 2014.

Despicable Me 2 is due for release in the UK on 28th June and in the US on 3rd July 2013. The film will feature the voices of Steve Carell, Russell Brand, Steve Coogan, Kristen Wiig and Al Pacino.

    • Linux 7.2's first release candidate gets off to a good start by Paul Hill Credit: Larry Ewing It has been a few weeks since the release of Linux 7.1, and in that time, the Linux 7.2 merge window has been open, where developers can submit their features and patches ready for the upcoming release. That window is now shut, and the release candidate phase has begun so that new features can be tested and further fixes applied. According to the founder of Linux, Linus Torvalds, this week’s release candidate looks “reasonably normal”. Although we are super early in the release candidates, this is a good sign as it makes it more likely that an eighth release candidate will not be needed. Torvalds even mentioned that the update’s stats are only larger than they really are because there was another AMD header drop with a third of the patch just being AMD GPU register definitions, which aren’t big changes but make the code contributed look larger overall. In addition to this, he noted that just over half the patch is drivers, even when excluding the AMD register dump. The rest of the changes are spread out over architecture updates, tooling, documentation, and core kernel updates. In the next week, Torvalds says that he will be chilling out, taking the week “mostly off”. Despite this, he will be reading emails and keeping up with things, so if he is slow responding, now you know why. He said he is hoping for a calm week, but we will just have to see if the second release candidate is actually like that. We should expect seven or eight release candidates before Linux 7.2 is released, so expect it around the end of August. If you missed it a few weeks ago, be sure to check out our coverage of Linux 7.1's release.
