I happen to agree with the statements John makes in his article. I just wish more people would speak with their wallets and demand getting rid of the online-only crap.

I haven't used it yet. Maxisman I have put down in most of my cities because he helps with crime, hospitals and fires. I am worried about the VU tower crime. I might try him in my oil, and mining town. LEss population due to crime would mean less traffic and faster sell times for my delivery trucks.

The VU tower will increase crime quite allot. It releases a criminal ever few minutes which goes off to steal stuff. Also to upgrade the tower you need to do some looting :p

Havent gotten to upgrade it yet. my town went bankrupt :p

A mining town is fun but eventually you'll run out of resources and with -20k hr you will die eventually :D

YEAH! people should stop playing WoW! Not having an offline feature, BLASHPEMY!

Except the game is so tightly integrated with the online only feature... The game client doesn't even handle all the simulation on its own so...

It has been proven that the client barely converses with the server with regards to the local city simulation. The "online" features are almost entirely multiplayer focused. The specifics have already been discussed, so I won't get into it again.

Way to completely miss the point of his article...but then again, you probably didn't read it and just commented after seeing the title.

I havent read all pages, but read most and maybe you didnt read either because i have posted several times in this thread ;D

This game is entirely multiplayer based, you can play alone like in WoW, but the regions need a server to operate.

I havent had much issues yet, few times the server of choice wasnt accessable (EU West 1 or 2) but i moved to EU West 6 and havent had a single issue since. Few times disconnected from server but that might've been my own connection. Plus it didnt interupt the game.

Oh and after going through all these (barely noticable to me and every game has these startup issues) problems I'm going to get another game and

free

But ignore Blizzard, a company well known with massive online games failing to keep their servers afloat almost every single frigging release.

But MAXIS, their first attempt to bring SimCity to the multiplayer realm has some issues and the whole world is crying rivers.

People should keep in mind MAXIS runs semi-autonomous within EA Games, unlike other divisions (maybe this changed in recent years though, Only wish Bullfrog and Westwood had done similar.). Will Wright took care of this and even though he hasnt been involved with SimCity 5... the game still turned out great.

It won't help, they're working on trade issues now.

http://www.simcity.c...imcity-update-5

I rather have them working on cars holding up traffic for no reason. Just stuck driving into a building, easily clogging up the whole town within a couple of minutes :/ ran into that several times. While I was unaware of trade issues :p it did work except when off course a stuck car is holding up traffic x.x

I don't get why people compare Sim City to games like WoW, Sim City is inherently single player (even in this release), the most you can do is trade between cities, and that will happen even in a purely single player setup (And happened in the previous release as well)

You can invite people to join your region, sure, but that doesn't make it a purely multiplayer game.

Me neither, but I disagree that it's 'inherently single player'. It's cooperative and social play...you can also collaborate on building Great Works, education and other things.

And many improvements you can build affect the region, so it wouldn't make sense to duplicate them just because you can.

Sim City hasn't' been inherrently single player since 3000, 4 already laid the groundwork for the multiplayer as you see it now.

You can play it single player but the regions are multiplayer oriented, have you even played it?

Or you can manage to have a positive income, 1million citizens and upgrade everything within a city? Doubtfull.

Either play several cities at once or with your friends.

WoW can be solo'd too(or play multiple accounts at once), and it could also "have" a single player if your in it for just grinding and questing.so why is it a bad comparison?

But i'd love to play together with a group of people and at least sort off work together as a region :p Only thing people seem to work together on is town hall upgrades :/

Small scale coop play is a much bigger thing on consoles, and there hasn't been much for strategy titles such.

From what I've seen of non MMO coop gaming on PC (Mass Effect 3,) people are too used to solo play to work together beyond the basics. They rarely communicate.

Haha so true, partially why i stopped bothering with FPS, aint fun to play multiplayer games basically solo most of the time. Except for the occasional game where people cooperate .

Ingame with SC except the rare hello, noone uses the chat. But then again the chat sucks and is almost useless anyways :(

But every time i focus on something, neighbours do the same, or people take up empty lots and then leave. I only have the limited edition and as i've noticed, I'm one of the few :(

And you either need cooperation or play several cities to create a massive town :p

After about 10 hours and 3 cities my opinion goes:

Wow they really ****ed this up I love alot of the changes they have made but after 3-4 with a city, there is nothing to do but sit there and stare at it, occasionally making changes. Then you have to develop a 2nd city due to boredom but even cities in the same reigon go on pause while you work on your second, the first city will do nothing until you go back and stare at it.

Another **** thing is the amount they talk about how "the games online is part of the experience etc." Im in a reigon with four people and the interaction required is "minimum" to say the best. A bunch of pop ups telling you that your neighbours now "supplying you with fire engines" is about as far as it goes.

It's an open-ended game by default so it's not like there's an objective to beat a super tough monster at the end to claim the victory.

In a simulation, you set your own objectives and you get the joy just from playing it.

It's not entirely multi-player based. I also disagree with The_Decryptor here. Maxis have changed the game, it's no long SimCity 4. They've aimed for a new area in the market.

Blizzard got COMPLETELY pasted for the launch of Diablo 3. They're still getting pasted for the issues with the game. World of Warcraft is a slightly different beast on patch launches because they have so many people. They're the biggest online game in the world, not exactly unusual that their servers would get smashed when new content released. That said, the Diablo 3 launch was a complete disgrace and I struggle to see how you missed all of the abuse thrown their way.

I also want them to fix the randomly breaking cars.. I have a high school where the buses get stuck and my city ****ing stops. I can't do anything because they lock up a road, which clogs an intersection, driving cars onto back streets which clogs other intersections and my city literally stops. INFURIATING.

You do know you can have multiple cities in the same region as a single player, right? Just like in Sim City 4.

The actual city building aspect is entirely single player. All the "social" stuff is bolted onto the single player game, it doesn't make it inherently multiplayer (With WoW you're playing on a server, with Sim City you're playing on your own computer)

Point with Blizzard and WoW servers unable to handle loads was that even a very well experienced online gaming company still has issues.

Diablo was a mistake, but already seems to be getting forgotten. And even then most of the complainers still went on and bought the game. Where as now i feel most people complaining didnt buy it and never really played SC before.

I'm no fan of the always online either, and if this was your typical EA Games title, I'd pass. But it's still MAXIS... If Westwood would've remained 90% Westwood after the purchase, or Bullfrog remained Bullfrog after the purchase... I'd buy their games without even looking at the title. These 3 studios are legendary and MAXIS is the only one remaining.

And yes the game can be single player without the need of internet. And I'm no fan of always online either. And if you use it as anti-piracy, maybe it helps MAXIS to keep pirates out. But this is SimCity, a very popular franchise... Won't be long before 'private servers' rise up all around the globe for all of you to play for free! Just like those private WoW servers.

I can understand that few people like to play this in places where there is no full internet connection. But in general, most of the whiners are on a dedicated DSL/T1+ line and wouldnt notice it needed a server if it wasnt for everyone whining about it. (and the occasional disconnect mid-game :p but game carries on anyways). But most whiners are frequent Piratebay visitors I reckon.

The bigger issue (from what I'm seeing is (quite aside from the online-connectivity) is that it's a *reboot* - in other words, it's *different*. When you expect things to always be a certain way (and the SimCity franchise has been single-player/offline-centered from the inception - while SC4 had SOME online connectivity, it wasn't built around it, and can be played completely without it), how much do you REALLY want things to change? (I came into the franchise when it moved to Windows, with SimCity 2000 - I have all *except* the current one installed, and will be adding it when I can get out to either load my prepaid card OR actually buy the game local-retail.)

The whipping Diablo III has been taking (especially since their launch issues were not as bad as those of the current SimCity) is ALSO likely more about the semi-reboot (changes between II and III) - especially the multiplayer. Even Civ V (while not a complete reboot, it did change markedly from IV) got its share of whacks - and when was the last time prior to that that anything connected to Sid Meier got whacked? (And there are many MANY examples - even such recent game-franchise reboots as DmC, SupCom 2, etc.)

    • 1. Define "better". 2. It's still more expensive than equivalent PCs so... And there is not one Windows platform. This is the mistake ALL Apple oriented people make. Apple is one OEM. You could reasonably compare them to one PC OEM, say Dell or HP. But you can't compare them to ALL PC OEMs. Case in point, Apple has NO touch screen MacBooks. No tablet Macs. There are no rugged Macs. The variety of PC OEM design is insane. With Apple, you have... Apple. The problem is that you're starting with Apple as the definition of "good" then filtering out anything that isn't close to an existing Apple product, then trying to homogenise all of those left into a fictional product line and then ignore any innovations to create a minimal feature subset so you can say "See! Apple better!" PS: I was an Apple dev for 17 years and helped develop MacInTalk and disability solutions for Apple, and worked on Microsoft Office for MacOS - and I have several Macs and MacBooks - so tread very carefully.
    • Major Xbox layoffs may claim South of Midnight developer Compulsion entirely by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe Microsoft has been making major changes in its gaming wing Xbox for a few months now, including the appointment of a new CEO, a large number of leadership changes, and strategy shifts. However, the company is seemingly also looking at initiating a major layoffs wave at Xbox and perhaps even a studio closure. The new report lands from Kotaku, Xbox first-party developer Compulsion Games is being shuttered soon by Microsoft. For those unfamiliar with the studio, it's the team behind Contrast (2013), We Happy Few (2018), and South of Midnight (2025). Its latest game was quite well received, even winning a Peabody Award for its writing. It even received a 9/10 in Neowin's own review, highlighting its engaging storyline, gorgeous world, and curious characters. The studio joined Xbox Game Studios in 2018, just as Microsoft announced it is acquiring Playground Games, Undead Labs, and Ninja Theory. Despite recent listings for new staff roles, according to the new report, Compulsion Games is being closed entirely, with over 90 staff being let go. Kotaku also added that the studio's leadership is in negotiations with Microsoft about this decision, but no official details have been revealed yet. The report lands just as two senior managers of Xbox leave their posts at Microsoft Gaming. Head of Xbox Game Studios Craig Duncan and chief of staff Louise O'Connor originally began their journey in Rare and have been a part of Xbox for over two decades. Dunkan has been responsible for games like Kinect Sports and Sea of Thieves, while O'Connor was primarily working on Rare's Everwild project before its cancelation. If this report about the studio shutdown is accurate, this may just be the start of a major new layoffs wave at Xbox Game Studios. There are also rumors of Arkane Studios being heavily affected. As always, take all these reports with a grain of salt until something official materializes from Microsoft or the studios.
    • The flaw with this analysis is that this laptop has a cellphone CPU in it. In the Intel world, that would be an N150 and those are everywhere, even in low end laptops. You can get an N150 based NUC with 16GB RAM and 256GB-512GB SSD... NOT soldered in... for < $500 Canadian (around US$360). The problem is two fold: tech bloggers/writers on most tech site (like this one, ironically) overvalue Apple and apparently aren't in the same earnings class as most regular people. As a result, we get breathless articles about how everyone needs a folding phone when most people just cannot afford one... or really need one. And we get Apple used as the baseline metric regardless of whether that comparison makes any sense. If Dell or HP released a retail laptop with a cellphone motherboard, you'd be all over them for doing that - but Apple does it and it's genius. I see articles suggesting what Samsung - a company that basically started the foldable phone market and has built them for eight years - needs to do to compete with Apple's unreleased, unspecced and unseen folding phone. Sorry, no - if the Neo (really creative name there BTW - still, better than the Go, the other "creative" product name everyone's using) encourages PC makers to make cellphone laptops using lower end ARM processors, we all lose. It's a step backwards and a capitulation to the fact that semiconductor makers and computer OEMs (and tech bloggers) have totally lost the plot.
