Google Reader will be shut down on July 1st:

Powering Down Google Reader

Posted by Alan Green, Software Engineer

We have just announced on the Official Google Blog that we will soon retire Google Reader (the actual date is July 1, 2013). We know Reader has a devoted following who will be very sad to see it go. We?re sad too.

There are two simple reasons for this: usage of Google Reader has declined, and as a company we?re pouring all of our energy into fewer products. We think that kind of focus will make for a better user experience.

To ensure a smooth transition, we?re providing a three-month sunset period so you have sufficient time to find an alternative feed-reading solution. If you want to retain your Reader data, including subscriptions, you can do so through Google Takeout.

Thank you again for using Reader as your RSS platform.

I will have to find an other reader :/

people still use RSS readers?

i haven't used one in a few years myself. I figured it was a dying off trend (though google's decision seems to support that)

What do you use instead?

Personally, Twitter + the desktop app of your choice, so that you can filter the feed into categories.

I was going to say the same I said on Twitter, Lists is the easiest way these days to keep in touch with breaking news and stuff of interest

I hate when people say with Twitter and social media you don't need RSS. How do I know what I have read or not read, etc...

I am not happy about this, need a new option. I use Feedly, but it pulls the information from GReader.

Problem is the service, if you have multiple apps/devices. Google reader worked and kept everything sync'd.

Google really is **** now, you just can't expect whatever service you're using today, to be there tomorrow :(

Yeah, I see the rationale behind it, but it still sucks. I had it synced up at home, at work, and on my mobile. NewsBlur looks like a decent alternative, but the entire internet just went there and it's 502-ing due to the load.

This topic is now closed to further replies.
