Hello everyone! Since I started this thread I've gotten a lot of positive responses, but also a lot of questions. So here is a quick F.A.Q. for all of you. Please see if your question is answered here before you ask. :D

1. When will updates be released?

Updates will be released Monthly. There is no set date, please consult the original thread to see the status.

2. Will you release update packs for people who already have the latest version?

Yes, we release 2 packs each update, One full version (for those who never downloaded it), and one update (for those who already have the previous version).

3. What is the current version?

The current released version is 4.5 Gold (February Update).

4. Can I make requests for features?

Yes, please make them in the original thread until an official request thread is made.

5. Is there an official website?

Yes, the site can be found here: AutoPatcher Home Page

6. Does the official site have different or newer information then is found here?

No, I make sure everything posted there is mirrored here. In fact, most of the time the newest info will be found here before it's transfered to the site.

7. Is AutoPatcher Freeware?

Yes. There is no requirement to pay. If you'd like to donate, you may do it here: AutoPatcher Donations

8. Can I have the source code for AutoPatcher?

Right now the answer is no. It may change, but for right now it is no.

9. Will there be other versions of the AutoPatcher?

Yes, we will work on other language packs and also other Operating Systems.

10. Will the AutoPatcher work with a Non-English Windows XP?

Not currently.

11. Will this work with both Home and Pro?

Yes it will.

12. Will this work with other versions of XP (64-bit/Media Center/etc)?

No, this is for Home/Pro only.

13. I have the original AutoPatcher (4.0) and I want to get the newest one, do I still have to download the whole package?

No. We release 2 packs each update, One full version (for those who never downloaded it), and one update (for those who already have the previous version).

14. Does this require SP1/SP1a.

Yes, you must have either of those Service Packs installed to run this program.

15. I'm trying to make a custom install, but I can't find the right files... what happened?

Sorry, I accidentally left them out (and outdated), you can download the new versions for November below.

16. I ran the AutoPatcher Update and now my Uxtheme is missing! What happened???

The answer to that is simple. Either the update glitched, or you didn't update the old file correctly. Why does it kill the Uxtheme? Easy, the command renames your current Uxtheme to Uxtheme.old and tries to copy the new one. If there is no new one to copy (because it's missing), then you're left with no Uxtheme. Raptor and I are working for an easy and problem free way to update future releases.

17. I heard about Microsoft's new Windows Update Beta ISO... will this replace the AutoPatcher?

No. This ISO contains SP1 and a few updates to prevent against Blaster, that is all. To see more detail, look here: AutoPatcher vs. WU ISO Beta

18. Does AutoPatcher detect what's already been installed in my system?

Yes. The current version can detect what it previously has installed, and also is able to read your registry like Windows Update does and detect if you installed it via any other means.

19. I want to set what *I* want as default. How do I do this?

First select what you want to be default using the program. Then instead of running the install, just hit "Save as Defaults" and from now on what you chose will be default.

I will update this F.A.Q. Page as new questions pop up. :)

what didi u use for coding AutoPatcher?.. when will you release the source code?

It's done using Visual Basic 6. And at this time I don't know. I would like to eventually release it, but Raptor has done all the main VB coding (I've done the rest... databases, gettin' updates, etc, etc... I just don't know VB worth anything), and he doesn't want it released yet. So we still discuss it now and then, and the second it is, I promise you'll have it. :)

Hi all

I was wondering if it is possible to substitute the patches (for english version of windows) to others (for different versions of windows)...that would avoid the creation of multiple versions of the program...

thx

Yes it is... Please PM me if you want specific instructions on how to do it. :)

what didi u use for coding AutoPatcher?.. when will you release the source code?

AutoPatcher is done in good old VB6... we would have used VB.NET which would make it a lot easier to do (no API calls, native XP support etc) but .NET Framework doesnt come included in SP1, so i guess AutoPatcher wouldnt even run :p

For now i want to keep the source private, until we get all things going the right way... Then, I guess I'll start writing comments and stuff (the code right now can only be read my me lol) and maybe release it under some kind of Open Source license... Time will tell...

I think the main page is down. I get this messeage

"Bandwidth Limit Exceeded

The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to the site owner reaching his/her bandwidth limit. Please try again later."

She's back up! (Y) Finally got ahold of Fowen. :) Now I just need to get more links up. lol

@Raptor - No, I fixed them all... somehow it seems someone got ahold of the unfixed one... quite odd... most don't have it, but a few seem to.

    • I like the show more options. The only problem with it is that it's not always in a consistent spot in the menu. If the copy/paste/cut, happens to show on top, then more option is the last in the menu. But if copy/paste/cut happens to show on the bottom, then more options is before the copy/paste/cut. But I do like the more options because it hides the stuff that I rarely use. But I would like to choose what it is or isn't hiding. That would make it better.
    • I wonder if "put it back the way it was for decades" ever crossed their minds? 🤣
    • Rescind the stupid "Show more options" in context menus and just give us the full menu instead of adding more steps to get to what we want. The "simpler by default" makes me think they'll go in the opposite direction. Every context menu should have a configure button so you can pick and choose what options should be shown, I know you can do that with some registry fu but that shouldn't be required.
    • This is why competition must exist. Finally, pressure is mounting on Microsoft to move in the right direction.
    • Microsoft is making Windows 11's context menus faster, simpler, and configurable by Taras Buria Five years ago, Windows 11 introduced redesigned context menus, offering users a simpler, more modern design. However, customers quickly discovered that the new menus leave a lot to be desired. Many are unhappy with performance (they are really slow), while others dislike the double-layed design, where many options are hidden behind the "Show more options" button. In addition, over the years, menus became cluttered and overloaded. While Microsoft has already fixed plenty of pain points across Windows 11, context menus remain mostly unchanged. Fortunately, Microsoft is finally listening. Marcus Ash, Design and Research Lead for Windows at Microsoft, responded to a tweet on X, confirming that the company is working on fixing Windows 11's context menus. Reworked context menus are supposed to be faster, simpler by default, and "configurable to what you use most." What the latter means is unknown, just like whether Microsoft plans to keep the classic menu alongside the modern one, but according to Marcus, the wait should finally be over soon, as he promised to "share our approach soon." Improved context menus will most likely appear first in Windows 11 preview builds in the Experimental Channel. While we wait for Microsoft to release them, you can try fixing context menus on your PC with a simple tool called Windows 11 Context Menu Manager. It lets you disable entries you do not need, not only cleaning up context menus, but also making them significantly faster. Microsoft has already improved Windows 11's Start menu and taskbar, so hopefully it will address user criticism of the context menu as well. Stay tuned for new Windows 11 preview builds, which usually arrive every Friday.
