Paul Thurrott: Next Xbox is expensive - 500$ or 300$ for sub

Recommended Posts

Out of interest, what kind of things has Paul get wrong?

I always thought he was quite reliable, but I'm probably very wrong! :)

I used to think that too, most recent thing I can remember was him telling everyone that Windows Phone 8 was going to be called Windows 8 Phone, he made a point of the naming change in one of his Windows Weekly episodes on Twit.tv

He doesn't seem to have much more of a connection to MS that we do, he just makes a big public point of the things he knows, many of which are just tips and rumours and leaks that we can all find easily enough ourselves

Assuming the rumours are true though, $300 is A LOT of money for a subscription device

I actually think Paul has his numbers backwards. $99 seems more like the subscription device. And $500 would be a box Microsoft doesn't really want to sell but wants to provide a DRM free option just to cover that base.

I may not even go next gen console and stay with PC. The only for sure buy, is if there's an adapter to use the Xbox wireless controller with PS4. That I'll probably buy. Haven't heard anything about Bluetooth for Next Xbox, I think they won't do it just to make it tougher to use the controller on Playstation. They know in the US the controller is a big deal.

Google around and find his pathetic "boycott IE 7" rant from when it was first being worked on. He threw huge hissy-fits because he didn't have any story on it. Eventually the IE Team got soo sick of it that he was contacted by them and got an exclusive out of it and he's been doing it since.

He whines and whines, sometimes spouts complete lies, until someone gets tried of it ands contacts him with info. Pure laziness. How he gets any respect in the tech world is beyond my comprehension.

Not to mention he's very full of himself. He once used (or still does? Not sure) small images of his face as his rating system on his site. Come on. Really? It wasn't done jokingly. He just loves seeing his face everywhere.

Prove him wrong on something he has said. Watch how fast he flips out or ignores you.

I think... If MS wanted to innovate in the realm of the console,do what they were doing with Windows8. why not integrate xbox libraries and have the users utilize their HDMI ports and bluetooth to use controllers? save on tons of R&D, integrate and ensure xbox proliferation with every OS system purchase.

there are only two teams for graphics, Nvidia and AMD/ATI...

then you'd have windows tablt, windows OS and xbox under one roof. have a dedicated app in the realm of say media center or attach it to the media center feature or an alone standing product within the windows OS?

Assuming the rumours are true though, $300 is A LOT of money for a subscription device, especially if the PS4 is going to release at the same price without any subscription BS.

That's the way I see it too. I sometimes wonder if Microsoft hasn't lost their freaking minds with a lot of their recent decisions.

When you get to be the size of Microsoft, your mind is made up not necessarily by customers' wants, needs, and desires, but by the pressure from shareholders who want more profits returned, as quickly and as often as possible,

That's true, sad to say.

Microsoft have turned into arrogant *******s. The sooner someone released a Linux distro worth having the ****ing better.

If you're waiting on Linux to save you, you may have a long wait.

PS3 costs around 500$ in India, and i expect PS4 to be at same price when it launches here. Xbox was cheaper though, will wait for official price announcement as i am really thinking to buy a new console this year.

Wait. PS3s are currently $500 in India and you think when Sony releases their new console it is also going to be $500? So a PS3 and a PS4 will be the same price?

PS3 was $500 when it was released here, and still is, Xbox360 outsell PS3 with long margin here. So IMO PS4 will be of same price. ( Maybe sony will discontinue selling PS3? )

If each new Xbox comes with a new Kinect 2.0 sensor then a higher price makes sense. The 360 started off at $399 iirc and that was without Kinect so who knows? A cheaper 360 model I bet will be sold as a media device and not so much a game system. I wouldn't be surprised if they did do it and ditch the dvd drive in the process and have it be a apple tv/ roku competitor.

We'll know for sure in May, but one things for sure, they'll keep the 360 around at least one more year.

Indian prices are typically inflated (due to taxes and duties), I won't be surprised if Sony doesn't officially introduce PS4 until rev2 or later. IIRC PS2 was officially introduced just when PS3 was getting ready to launch in the US.

Same with Microsoft - even today, the basic Xbox 360 is something like ?16,000+ which is roughly $320+ (compared to $199 in the US).

This could be a very clever ploy by Paul to get everyone up and arm's about this rumor, Microsoft's sees this and the next Xbox is priced accordingly with no always-online requirement.

My wild and baseless prediction:

$499 "everything included package" (2 wireless controllers and a game)

$399 slimmed down package (just 1 wired controller, no game)

$299 - Get the $499 package with subscription

Next wild and baseless prediction: Whatever the release price is, it will probably stay the same for at least 1.5 years more likely 2 years.

    • Microsoft resumes forced Copilot app installation on some Windows PCs by Usama Jawad Late last year, Microsoft planned to begin the automatic installation of the Microsoft 365 Copilot app on certain Windows PCs. However, in March 2026, it disabled this process due to a technical issue and informed customers that it would let them know when it would resume. It seems like that was only a temporary respite, as the Redmond tech giant has started the forced installation of the app on eligible devices. In an update on its Message Center for IT admins, Microsoft has informed customers that it is resuming the automatic installation of the Microsoft 365 Copilot on commercial Windows PCs that have Microsoft 365 apps already installed. What this means is that if you have Microsoft Office apps like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and more installed on your Windows PC through a Microsoft 365 license, you'll likely see the Microsoft 365 Copilot app pop up in your Installed Apps section soon, too. Fortunately, IT admins do have some control over this rollout. If they choose to opt out, devices in their tenant won't automatically get the dreaded Copilot app. However, phased rollout via feature flags has already begun and is expected to be completed by the end of June: Feature Flag1: started Jun 4, expected to finish June 10 Feature Flag2: expected to start on June 11, expected to finish on June 17 MSGraph schema rollout: expected to start on June 18, expected to finish on June 24 Feature Flag3: expected to start on June 25, expected to complete by July 1st Microsoft hasn't detailed what the process is to toggle the feature flags in its Message Center, and its public support page does not seem to mention it yet either. The Redmond tech giant has encouraged IT admins to let users know beforehand so they aren't caught by surprise to see a new app seemingly installed without manual interaction or their consent. Users who already have the app installed or are based in the European Economic Area (EEA) are unaffected by this move, which Microsoft has understandably flagged as a "major change".
