So I'm getting ready to upgrade.. Any thoughts?

Recommended Posts

So I brought my Canon T1i with (18-55) a long time ago now, along with a Canon EF 50 f/1.8 II. I'm in the Digital Video Production program, and my program is moving onto DSLRs instead of videocameras. I tried using the T1i for video, it's good.. but it's still shooting at 720p and it's pretty much done for that era. I need a new DSLR.

Remember, I'm a film student and money is always and will be a factor. So what I am thinking of getting is the a decent lens and the 5D MKII, or spending 4k on a 5D MKIII with the Kit lens. What do you guys think? Of course, spending less is the best, but I want something to last me quite a while, so I can do photo and video for clients. Any other suggestions would also be good.

Thanks guys.

From my very little experience, taking photographer ability out of the picture I would say its the piece of glass on the end of the camera that makes the difference. I honestly believe that a good photographer will be able to produce the same picture regardless of camera however lens would play a bigger part in the IQ (all be it still small).

I guess the question is - will the kits lens actually be able to do what you want?

But isn't the MK3 better for video? It's a body I can use for a long time and as for lenses, I know the old 18-55 won't work but the Kit Lens that comes with the 5D MK3 should suffice for now. Plus I can rent/borrow out various lenses from the school next year.

They filmed either the Season 6 or 7 finale of House with a Canon 5D Mark II. I'd say it's more than adequate for video. Set up a deal alert on slickdeals for the body. Refurbished ones have been appearing for relatively cheap recently.

stretch the budget and get a 5dm3 (body only) then get some old nikon AI/AIS lens for the manual aperture and price/performance ratio.

Yeah.. I can't stretch the budget. It's already stretched. Is the MK3 that much better than the MK2? The MK2 now is pretty old, I know some people still use it, but however.. the MK3 is there for a reason right? I don't want to purchase the Mk2 when it is being discontinued from the line.

What kind of lens is good for just a standard lens? I know the 18-55mm won't work right?

haven't considered the 6d?

The kit lens isn't that bad at all (For both nikon and canon) But you will always be limited to apertures >3

How is the 6D compared to the Mk3? Remember, even though it's for video, I want to also shoot photos as well.

http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/Cameras/Compare-Camera-Sensors/Compare-cameras-side-by-side/(appareil1)/836%7C0/(brand)/Canon/(appareil2)/795%7C0/(brand2)/Canon

it's basically an mkiii sensor in a "cheaper" body * (stil weather sealed) and $1500 cheaper in MSRP.

video of the 6d, same as mk:

Maximum format image video 1920 x 1080 / 30 fps

anyway, check out the specs and links and see for yourself!

get the mark 3 then pick up like a 28 ais, 50 ais, 105 ais for like under 500 all together.

I kinda want just one lens for now.. something I can use in all situations.. which one would that be? If I don't want to spend $500 if I don't have to. Plus, it's just a primary lens just to do daily shooting. Next year I can always rent out lens from the school.

I dunno, this review says the video is pretty bad on the 6D.

you're kidding me? out of the reputable review sites you chose the giz? for real reviews checkout either dpreview.com or dxomark.

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canon-eos-6d/21

Heck even the mkiii has the same "issues"

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canon-eos-5d-mark-iii/24

Same sensor and processor...

It sounds like you're trying to get a 1-size-fits-all situation due to money constraints; you'll outgrow what ever zoom lens you buy pretty quick on a 5D.

Well as I said, I can easily rent out other lenses at school, but for me right now.. I just need something for everyday shooting.. yes going for the 1 size fits all.. exactly what you said.

Yeah I realized that just now. Giz is not a very good site. I also read that they the problem was with the pre-production models. So I'm still up in the air right now.

Also just read and saw the review over http://www.canonwatch.com/canon-eos-6d-reviews-round-up-moire-issue-confirmed/ seems like Mk3 is the way to go imo.

seeing you are on a budget and the difference in image quality from the mkIII is negligible (and according to dxomark, the 6d excels in some areas), get the 6d and buy a good superzoom which is what your need is at the moment, such as the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM,

http://www.amazon.com/Canon-24-105mm-USM-Lens-Cameras/dp/B000B84KAW/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1366948921&sr=8-7&keywords=canon+dslr+zoom+prime

either one of those and get the nifty fifty for about $100 bucks ( if you chose the 70-200)

http://www.amazon.com/Canon-50mm-1-8-Camera-Lens/dp/B00007E7JU/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1366949023&sr=1-1&keywords=canon+50mm for the f1.8

and

like posted above, there isn't a "one to rule them all lens", so again, seeing as you're budget minded, go for the cheaper body and invest and some decent glass.

Also remember, neither the mkiii or the 6d have built in flash, so you mine want to consider that into the equation$$$

I think I am going to go for the MKIII and the 24-105mm f/4.. so practically the MK3 with Kit lens? It is just all the extra stuff with the MK3 is stuff I probably will need in the future. Like the headphone jack and the dual memory card slots. The MK3, like the MK2 will probably be a top of the line camera for many years to come.

I think why Canon made the 6D was to phase out the MK2, but it isn't as good as the MK3. Looking at the MK2, so many filmmakers used it and it's held it's own for a lot of years now and I believe the MK3 will probably do the same. The reviews video wise say that the MK3 isn't as sharp, but you can easily fix it in post. But what the 6D is missing is all the extra focus points, which is probably a good feature.

Is there a reason to go for the 6D and not the MK3 because of the footage more sharp + price? I pretty much do grading and CC to my footage in post anyway.

Autofocus points will be an issue, you can get around those in Nikon (all AFS lens have manual override so you can focus wherever you want ) don't know if you can with canon lens? Someone please pitch in on that.

The worst mistake you can make is thinking you'll be set with one lens. The only reason I suggested the 6d was because of budget, I would personally have a body with almost the same performance as the mk3 and buy more glass. If money wasn't an issue I'd say mk3 without a doubt

If you can rent lens or borrow perhaps, buy the body only and buy lens later based on your experience, camera bodies come and go, lens dont.

Well as I said, I can borrow lenses from the school for free next semester. So with that said, the MKIII and 24-105mm should be fine for everyday shooting right? or is there a better lens I can get? Also do you guys know in the future, if I am going to pick up the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 if that will work with the MKiii?

Yeah the f4 24-105 would be a good walkaround lens, "normal" view is around 50mm. The sigma you posted should work perfectly with that body.

it would not work fine, as the sigma is a dx crop lens.

Oh well that's a bummer, so if I were going to go for Sigma lenses in the future.. which ones should I be looking at?

:s Can't "dx" lens be used on fx bodies like nikon? (with the obvious light fall offs), sorry I thought you could so the same in canon :/

edit: Holy hell should've read this before posting:

On Nikon you can mount a DX lens on an FX camera. And the camera (Nikon D3, D700, D3x) responds by automatically reducing the coverage of the viewfinder images and cropping the resulting JPG or raw image. This is a sensible thing to do as the lens was designed for smaller sensors: the extra field of view covered by the larger sensor will have (often much) lower quality than the DX part.

Canon?s EF-S lenses, in contrast, are mechanically blocked from mounting on an FX camera. Canon?s story is that, because the FX mirror is larger than the DX mirror, there is a risk of the larger DX mirror hitting the back of the EF-S lens and destroying the mirror and maybe the lens. In other words, this mechanical safety measure allows EF-S lenses to be designed that are physically unsafe to use on an FX camera like the Canon 1D or 5D series. This mechanical safety measure is actually a special plastic ring at the back of every EF-S lens. If you are brave enough, you can remove that ring with a screw driver (at your own risk) according to some sources (link1, link2, link3).

    • AMD releases hotfix for driver install issues on Windows 10 PCs by Taras Buria Earlier this week, AMD released an important graphics driver update. Version 26.6.2 brought AMD FSR 4.1 support to the previous-gen Radeon lineup, the RX 7000 series, giving users better upscaling tech that was previously locked to the newest GPUs. However, the driver turned out to be a little buggy, with users reporting installation issues on systems still running Windows 10. AMD quickly acknowledged the bug and today released a hotfix to resolve the problem. The AMD 26.6.3 Hotfix update is now available for download from the official website. Given that it is a hotfix release, it has only one change in its release notes: AMD announced the update on its official X account and added that a WHQL driver update with the necessary fixes would be released next week. Meanwhile, users can apply the hotfix or roll back to the previous driver using the official AMD Cleanup Utility. You can download AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.6.3 Hotfix Preview Driver from the official website here. It is compatible with all currently supported graphics cards and 64-bit Windows 10 and 11. Full release notes are available on the same page.

    • Amazon Prime Day 2026 deal sees Samsung Odyssey 49" 240Hz QD-OLED monitor at lowest price by Sayan Sen Earlier today we covered a very good deal on JBL's BAR 800 Dolby Atmos soundbar system as the unit is available for just $600 as part of Amazon Prime Day 2026 deals. That's not all though as there are many more discounts to choose from. If you are looking for a high-end monitor, Samsung's 49 inch G9 QD-OLED gaming monitor is a solid deal too as it's currently just $855 (purchase link under the specs table down below). It is a super-ultrawide (32:9) 1440p curved gaming monitor and as such should offer a very immersive experience. The G93SC is a 49-inch QD-OLED (Quantum Dot OLED) screen and that means it should have excellent contrast as well as color reproduction. Brightness is a bit lacking though so if you are looking to set it up in a relatively bright room, you may be better off with something else. Speaking of external light and brightness, the major difference on the G93SC vs the newer G93SD is that the latter comes with Samsung's "Glare Free" technology to reduce glare while the C model packs a glossy finish. The technical specifications of the Samsung G93SC are given in the table below: Specification Value Panel Type OLED Screen Shape Curved Screen Curvature 1800R Resolution DQHD (5120 × 1440) Aspect Ratio 32:9 Brightness (Typical) 250 cd/m² Brightness (Minimum) 200 cd/m² Contrast Ratio 1,000,000:1 HDR Support VESA DisplayHDR True Black 400 HDR10+ HDR10+ Gaming Response Time 0.03 ms (GTG) Refresh Rate Up to 240 Hz Viewing Angle 178° Horizontal / 178° Vertical Color Support 1 Billion Colors Color Gamut 99% DCI-P3 (CIE1976) Adaptive Sync FreeSync Premium Pro / G-SYNC Compatible DisplayPort 1 × DisplayPort 1.4 HDMI 1 × HDMI 2.1 Micro HDMI 1 × Micro HDMI 2.1 USB Hub 3 × USB 3.0 Speakers Built-in Speaker Output 5W × 2 Channels Operating Temperature 10°C – 40°C Operating Humidity 10–80% (Non-condensing) Stand Type Height Adjustable Stand (HAS) Height Adjustment 120.0 ± 5.0 mm Tilt -2° (±2°) to 15° (±2°) Wall Mount 100 × 100 mm (VESA) Included HDMI Cable HDMI-to-Micro HDMI Cable Included DisplayPort Cable Yes Get it at the link below: Samsung 49" Odyssey G93SC Series Curved Gaming Monitor, QD-OLED: $854.99 (Sold and Shipped by Amazon US with Prime) Prime subscription can be cancelled within three business days at no cost. • Actually Windows 11 is the GUI from Windows 10 X slapped onto Windows 10. Hence the many performance issues and initial limitations of the UI, like all the restrictions on the task bar placement and features. You could not even right click on the Taskbar and bring up task manager when it first shipped. Windows 10X was truly a new OS from the ground up. Basically a lightweight OS that ran containers for various app types. Win32 got its own container. Performance was not good and OEM’s pushed back on it, but wanted a new OS to push Pc sales. Hence Windows 11. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_10X
