Microsoft creates an Apple vs. Samsung wedding fight for its new WP8 ad

It wasn't funny when Apple made fun of their competition, and it's not funny when Microsoft do it, either.

What it IS, is juvenile.

Let each product compete on its merits alone, and leave the childish attacks on the competition to the idiot fans.

I think you need to lighten up a bit and look at this ad from a different angle. They're making fun of the petty bickering between Apple and Samsung fans. In a way, they're showing how silly it is to pledge your loyalty to one specific company at the expense of ridiculing another. There's no need for the rivalry between Apple and Samsung but unfortunately, it exists.

As for Windows Phone, it's doing fairly well and it's getting better by the day. In most markets, it's already in the third spot after iOS and Android.

Yet again Microsoft attacks the competition rather than promoting Windows Phone on its merits. It's getting pretty tedious.

I find the ad to be funny. Is the, "Autocorrect this!" girl the same girl who was waiting in line to buy an iPhone in the Samsung commercials? If so, that makes it even better. Anyways, FloatingFatMan doesn't find the ads to be funny, and I respect that. We have a difference of opinion, but it doesn't make his point any less valid. Microsoft spent a boat load of money to make a one minute commercial that doesn't give me a single reason why I should ditch what I have and go back to Windows Phone. Same goes for the Next Big Thing ads from Samsung.

I find that ads that ignore the competition and focus solely on the product that they are advertising to be more effective. People have a short attention span as it is, so why waste time and money advertising for your competitor?

Man no one here has a sense of humor.

I wouldn't say they lack a sense of humor. There are things that I find to be funny, but you may not. Doesn't really mean anything, and as I mentioned above, it doesn't make their points any less valid. Ignoring the fact that other companies do it, why can't Microsoft advertise Windows Phone on its own merits? It might be asking for a lot, but look at their ads from an objective view. Is there anything about them that makes you go, "Man, I need to quickly get rid of what I have an get this Lumia," ?

The difference is that Microsoft has been running an aggressive and sustained campaign against its competitors, particularly Google. It's also worth noting that a lot of the attack ads Microsoft has been putting out haven't been as good natured as this one - the Scroogled ads are particularly negative. The ads spend more time trashing the competition than selling the product / service. At least the ad you linked to explains why people should want the S3, whereas this ad doesn't promote a single Windows Phone / handset feature.

To be fair, the camera in the Lumia 920 is clearly being promoted at the end.

I disagree. They're shown using the camera, which is a standard feature on every phone made within the past five years. There's nothing to distinguish it from the competition, despite the fact that the Lumia 920 has a great camera. It's a complete waste of an advert.

They're shown using the camera

i.e. They're promoting it.

which is a standard feature on every phone made within the past five years.

The camera on most phones simply isn't worth using.

There's nothing to distinguish it from the competition

The fact that it has a camera worth using is what distinguishes it from the competition.

The camera on most phones simply isn't worth using.

And there's nothing in the ad to make anything think the Lumia's is any better

The fact that it has a camera worth using is what distinguishes it from the competition.

Again, how does the viewer know that it's worth using? We're shown no examples, or comparisons...

some of you guys don't get it. its called exposure. many people don't know theres something called windows phone, and they don't even know nokia makes phones anymore. the ad is funny, it uses well established products like iphone that will get the attention of the viewer, and in the end they show their product. its enough for some people to become curious and go look up windows phones,or ask to try them out at the cell shop. if you look at customer satisfaction surveys, windows phones and nokia branded ones have some of,if not the best results. the problem is getting more people using them. this ad helps accomplish this. the endless windows 8 ads on tv also make the interface look very familiar, as there are over 100 million windows 8 devices in use today.

This is exactly how I see some neowin members. Stupidity included.

Seems it really affect some people what others use or think about what they use.

LOL Hilarious Ad. The guy with the Apple logo on his chest reminded me of someone expect this person would have a windows 8 logo :

So has Google, nothing new here. Lighten up - if you can't laugh, ignore and move on. Don't try to find fault where there isn't one.

Once again Microsoft fails. The commercial is funny but it doesn't explain to me why I should use a Windows phone.

Its a really funny ad but like others have said, they should spend more time showing me what a windows phone can do..

Instead of ragging on the competition, they should show me why they are better.

There is a bunch here where they show features, this is not the only commercial they are making/showing.

If this thread has demonstrated anything, it's that people really don't understand how advertising works.

Reading off a glorified spec sheet gets you nowhere, a good advert is catchy, I.e. the more viral it is the bigger the impact.

The fact you're all here talking about it is proof positive the advert was successful. Even the people whining about how it attacks competitors when it's actually only attacking fanboyism - you're all just SEO fodder.

I don't have any problems with ragging on the competition myself. I consider the old Apple ads the best in this regard. They poked fun at Windows' shortcomings while saying subtly "we don't have this problem."

Some people get it and some don't. Microsoft doesn't.

    • That is $130 more than I paid for my 4TB a year ago. How is this a deal?
    • JetBrains' new AI-first 'IDE' JetBrains Air is now on Windows by David Uzondu JetBrains has announced that JetBrains Air, its Agentic Development Environment (ADE) is now available for download on Windows x64 and ARM. You might not be familiar with JetBrains Air. It's this new desktop app that the company launched back in March 2026 to let developers hand off tasks to AI agents instead of writing every line manually. You can see it as more of an Agentic Development Environment (ADE) rather than a traditional Integrated Development Environment (IDE). The latter builds its features around a central text editor, while the former arranges everything around the AI agent itself. Here's how JetBrains describes it: Air was born from the ashes of Fleet, an experimental editor that the company quietly killed in December 2025 after realizing that competing directly with VS Code was a losing battle. The company repurposed Fleet's lightweight, modern architecture to build Air, transforming a basic code editor into a workspace for running multiple AI agents. When Air launched, it was only available for macOS. It wasn't until earlier this month that Linux users got a chance to play with the software. Now that Air is on Windows, you can do things like map out a complex feature in Plan mode and watch an AI write the implementation plan to a markdown file before writing any code. You can iterate on this plan, add references to specific classes or files, and choose whether to run the agent locally or inside an isolated Git worktree. Running agents in parallel means you can have Claude refactor a database schema in one branch while Codex writes tests in another, leaving you free to do other important things. You can even set up a pipeline where Claude writes the code, and Codex reviews it. At the moment, Air is free. If you have a JetBrains AI Pro or Ultimate subscription, you get full access to the built-in agents, though there's also the option to Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) to run APIs from Anthropic, OpenAI, or Google. If you're interested, here are the download links for both x64 and ARM64.
    • Depending how you’re wiring it internally, but try to put it inside conduit, that way in the future you can more easily replace cables, compared to running inside studs alone At least cat6a too
    • I bet Meta has lots of info on you anyway, gathered by other means. And Google, and Microsoft, and every other tech giant. If you use some form of modern electronic device, they own you already...
