802.11n hangs on my S4 - help wanted

Test case:

1. My DLink router DIR-655 (latest firmware) configured in 802.11n mode only

2. After about 10 mins of browsing the connection freezes - the AP is still connected but I have no connectivity to the net - can't even ping the AP's IP... - the easiest way to reproduce is to just run speedtest which hangs mid-way.

3. When I disconnect from the AP and reconnect it works again - until next time it happens...

Things I know:

1. Not an issue on my wife's iPhone 4S

2. When the AP is in 802.11b/g mode it works fine (but much slower)

I'm really stumped - it seems like an issue with my S4 (latest firmware) or an incompatibility with the router?

Anyone else having this issue? Ideas? Any S4 owner willing to do a similar test? Thanks.

My dual-band linksys router only supports "N" on the 5GHz band and for some reason that band is always significantly weaker and more prone to problems than the "G" running on the 2.4GHz band. Not sure if something like that is related.

I'm having a hard time understanding how 802.11g would be "much slower" than 802.11n for "browsing" (which I assume to mean web browsing). How fast is your internet connection speed? I'd imagine that would be the bottle neck, and not the difference in 802.11g and 802.11n speeds. I don't think there would be much difference in latency between 802.11g and 802.11n. Latency, again, would be primarily your router and internet connection.

Thanks - as I mentioned this seems to be a general issue with my router/AP (DIR-655). Guess it's because it's a 'draft n' router and though it works with most of my N-devices there's an issue with the Galaxy...

N is quite a bit faster than G (not to mention the better range). My downlink is 120Mbit/sec so I can definitely tell the difference when downloading stuff... Oh, well.

I'm still skeptical that there should be a difference on anything less than a 20mbps Internet Connection (G should be 54mbps). But I don't question the difference you are observing. I can't help but wonder if there are other things wrong with the setup of your router. Have you tried a hard-factory-reset (which isn't always the obvious procedure of pressing the reset button)? You might want to do a google search on how to do the "real reset" for your router and see if your 802.11g speeds become usable.

ive been through a ton of routers,and there is always that one device that doesn't play nice with the router. it doesn't matter what brand,what model of router or device, theres always a device that ends up having problems whereas other devices work properly. its maddening sometimes.

It's a general problem with Dlink routers and the S4 - switching to g mode works as a work-around (no, reseting the router, changing channels, guard intervals and beacon settings doesn't fix it :-)
