Boy survives monster OK tornado, killed by dog

(CNN) -- At the tender age of five, surviving a tornado a mile wide is, at the least, traumatizing. Being separated from mom and dad after that, and living in a strange house, is enough to make a little boy break down and cry.

Through the eyes of a dog, possessive of its owner, a stranger in the house screaming at a family member can look like a threat that must be dealt with.

The two scenarios cruelly collided over the weekend when a 150-lb bull mastiff fatally mauled a 5-year-old boy, puncturing his head and neck.

Lynn Geiling had taken the little boy into her Jessieville, Arkansas, home after he and his family survived a monster tornado that in May waylaid Moore, Oklahoma. His parents had returned home, 200 miles away, to gather up the pieces of their lives.

Sunday, something upset the child and he threw a temper tantrum, the country sheriff's office said.

Geiling went over to calm him, but the screaming upset another family member -- Geiling's dog.

The dog probably thought the boy was attacking its owner, said Garland County Deputy Scott Hinojosa.

It lunged for him.

Geiling fought to unlock the dog's jaws from around the boy while calling to her husband for help, the sheriff's office said.

She pried the dog loose, but the damage was done.

The couple rushed the bleeding boy to meet an ambulance, which took him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Fate? If you believe you have zero control over your life rendering everything you do basically useless, than sure.

Terrible this happened, not only that but it's likely the Dog will be put down as well even though the Dog likely thought it was just protecting its Master. This whole story is very, very sad.

It was just trying to do what was right, hardly a 'good' thing that it needed to be put down due to incompetent owners. If they had trained their Dog properly this situation would have been avoided. There is no such thing as a bad Dog. Not like Humans have ever taken into consideration their moronic actions affecting the lives of other creatures.... It makes you slightly understand SPEhosting's response. Humans are grossly incompetent and worse yet, most of the time, we don't know it.

On my walk down town last week, I pass a man on central walking 2 dogs. As I pass him and his dogs they go wild and start growling, barking and lunging at me, all the while he is holding on to the leashes trying to hold them back.

Then after I'm a block away, I hear him yell "GOD DAMMIT!". He then starts yelling at the dog, calling him, trying to get him to stop. As I turn around I see a large dog who is running straight at me with his leash flapping in the breeze.

The dog gets to me starts jumping and snarling at me. He managed to grab a hold of my headphone cable and ripped my iPod Nano 4G out of my pocket onto the ground. The owner finally caught up with the dog and after a little effort got a hold of him.

I looked at the now restrained dog and said "Bad dog!". The owner asked if I was ok, I said "yes i'm fine".

Now what if I was a kid?

Anyway, why would you leave your young child in the care of a family who owned such a beast?

Dog buyers should undergo a background check before buying "bull" style dogs. A lot of these dogs are raised in an aggressive way where they will be a danger to their surroundings. Having one of these vicious beasts roaming around small children is like leaving a loaded gun sitting around the house. Irresponsible.

This was the Dogs fault? Think again.

Indeed, crying five-old-children can pose a serious threat to adults.

Dogs don't have the reasoning capabilities of a Human, which is why a Chihuahua is pretty certain it can challenge a German Shepherd to a fight, size is of no importance. They aren't even aware of the defensive capabilities of a Human Child... Heck, even a small snake or spider can take down a full grown Human so why can't a much larger child (in the dogs eyes this is actually quite rational).

On the flip side, a friend I know has a bull mixed with something else. Hyper pup but he's probably one of the friendliest dogs I've encountered.

It's sad that many people don't have what it takes to be effective disciplinarians for their large dogs. You've got to be aggressive/assertive and have what we in the Army called "a voice of authority" that differs from the voice you normally speak to them in. Not abusive, but you have to make it very clear that you are in charge and the animal does what it's told without discussion. You've got to discipline them when they're young as they're growing up, so that when they are adults, they know that when you speak, they listen, or there will be consequences. I have two dogs, one of them is a hound/hunting dog and is only about 10 months old, and weighs about 50 pounds. Already however, I've gotten him to a point where we can spend the whole day running through the woods together and have a big old time, I'll bring him the house for a few minutes sometimes just to sit and pet on him, and he's very protective of our little boy and our smaller dog. But if I speak in a certain voice, his entire body posture changes and he does exactly what he's told, even if that means stopping mid-stride when he's chasing something he shouldn't be. A lot of people don't know how to assume that authoritative position and assert themselves as the one in charge of the relationship, and when they can't do that, the dog feels like it's the one calling the shots and can do what it wants, and once they grow up to adulthood feeling that way, it's harder to break them of it.

In this case I'm torn. You can't have an animal that has killed a human being be allowed to think that it's acceptable, or that the worst thing that's going to happen is a spanking, but at the same time, the animal was acting according to its instincts and protecting its family from an unfamiliar creature that seemed aggressive at the moment. Glad I wasn't the one that had to pull the trigger.

probably is not right ... i just care more about animals then humans I would rather talk to a strange random dog then a stranger in the streets..or even half the people i know.... with animals... nothing is personal ...
