He thought the box was empty, but a California husband accidentally sold his wife's $23,000 diamond wedding ring for $10 at a garage sale on June 1.

"Every year our community holds a garage sale. I was in the hospital, I just had a baby, so my husband thought it would be fun for my other kids if they could sell some things at the garage sale," said Racquel Cloutier, 31, of Laguna Niguel, Calif., who owns the ring.

For the sale Eric Cloutier chose things he thought the family no longer needed, including a seemingly empty watch box.

"He didn't know that before I went to the hospital, I put my ring in that box. I wanted the ring to be in a safe place and out of reach from my 2-year-old twins," Cloutier told ABC News.

Cloutier realized her ring, and the box it was in, was missing a day after she returned from the hospital, June 5.

"I go into my husband's closet, can't find the box, and then he tells me he sold it. I said, 'You sold it? What do you mean you sold it?' I immediately started crying," Cloutier said.

"I'm very, very, very upset," Cloutier continued. "I'm trying to remain optimistic but I don't know anymore. There's a small chance whoever bought the box doesn't know the ring is in there."

According to Cloutier, the ring was inadvertently bought by a blonde woman who was at first unsure if she would even buy the watch box.

"I would never, ever keep the ring if I had found it," Cloutier said. "If you're honest, you're honest. Clearly, the ring was in the box by accident."

As for Cloutier's husband, "He feels really terrible," she said.

He should feel terrible. What an idiot.

I agree he should feel terrible, but probably not for the same reasons you think.

He's the one that spent $23k and resold it for $10, we don't know how the wife put the ring in the box, it could

have been hidden under the watch holder, maybe he did look inside, and it appeared empty.

That said, there are two parts of failure here, the lack of communication from the wife on her hiding spot, and

the fact he had a garage sale without the wife there.

There's a difference between a $10 trinket and a $23,000 trinket.

That would be my only reason for caring -- the $23,000. :p

Why would you sell any container without looking in it? Guy is an idiot.

Why would someone buy an empty watch box ?

Whilst she may have lost a ring its merely a symbol of their relationship which she still has,so she needs to get over her delusion that its somehow harms their relationship not having it.

I don't think that's it. The ring was very expensive, probably the most expensive thing she owned. I doubt it gets replaced anytime soon.

Whilst she may have lost a ring its merely a symbol of their relationship which she still has,so she needs to get over her delusion that its somehow harms their relationship not having it.

Where does it say she thinks no longer having the ring harms the relationship? I didn't read that anywhere.

Monetary value in real relationships is not what makes it valuable its the emotional side that matters, had she said their were memory's related to the item then maybe the loss would have some value.

You mean like the memory of her wedding when she married her husband?

I have no sympathy for either of them.

The husband is a loser for buying such a ring in the first place and giving it a woman who's now crying over a small piece of metal and stone. All this tells me they could hardly afford it, that the woman has some insecurity/psychological issues, and I wouldn't be surprised if the ring was purchased on credit.

Had they been truly wealthy and happy, the husband could have said: "honey, don't worry, I'll get you a newer, better, and more expensive ring tomorrow - forget the box, what's important is that we have each other" - and it would have been a non-issue for this family.

    • But we are talking about Elon Musk, no AT&T... I know big companies are evil, but Elon and his companies are in another level which is much more dangerous.
    • New PowerToys update fixes memory leaks and other issues by Taras Buria Another bug-fixing update is available for PowerToys version 0.100. After releasing version 0.100.1 with a bunch of bug fixes and patches, Microsoft pushed version 0.100.2 to address two important issues with one of Command Palette Dock's features. With PowerToys 0.100.2, Microsoft fixed the performance meter displaying incorrect values and memory leaks, which are particularly unwanted things in the current situation with overpriced PC hardware. Here is the changelog: Reverted a Performance Monitor dock refresh change that forced item refreshes on every metric update Fixed a memory leak in the Performance Monitor dock extension by reusing stable network upload/download band items instead of creating new list items on each refresh For those unfamiliar, Command Palette Dock is a relatively new addition to PowerToys. It is a taskbar-like tool that you can keep on top of the screen to pin various useful widgets, commands, and more. It can display time, weather, your PC's performance metrics, and more. Microsoft introduced the Command Palette Dock in March 2026 in PowerToys 0.98. Microsoft has dedicated documentation for Command Palette Dock, and you can check it out on the official Microsoft Learn website. You can update PowerToys to the latest version by going to Settings > General and clicking "Check for updates." Alternatively, you can download the installer from GitHub using this link. In other news, Microsoft is working on a new window-management utility for PowerToys. Called Alt Window Cycle, it will let you use the Alt + ` shortcut to switch between different windows in a single app. You can learn more about the tool here.
    • You did take leaf out of Trumps book already and had brexit - only to harm yourself. The same goes with this AI nonsense. The obvious solution for these companies is to move their head office to Brussels. I can see quite much irony there... 🙂
    • Thank gawd AT&T never worked with the US gov....
    • Wonder if they are trying to slow down Linux traction (not saying this is the only factor) in the consumer space. With the most pressure probably being steam deck/box, etc.
