Lost my iphone 4, got galaxy note 2

Recommended Posts

As the title says, I needed a new phone, came across a Galaxy Note 2 that was 3 months old with warranty that I picked up for $300. Couldn't pass up the deal for sure. Being that I was still impressed with Jelly Bean 4.2.2 I thought "why not". I don't mind the Galaxy Note 2 but I thought it would be exactly like the Nexus 7 I picked up. Its similar but not the same. The note 2 obviously still has 4.1.2 and seems alot laggier then the nexus 7. I find this odd that it stutters frequently, which shouldn't happen considering its top-end specs. In the past I have always criticized Android because of its frankensteinish OS and when buying the nexus 7 and using it, I thought those days were behind Android. Sadly, until the 4.2.2 update happens, I will not find out if the lag days are over. I am sure people will say "should have bought a nexus 4" but this was right in front of me and was an impulse buy. I will wait another month and if 4.2.2 doesn't come out (or doesn't remove the lag) I will be selling it and going with either the iphone 5 (I already miss the iPhone features) or nexus 4. Time will tell.

For me.

Good: Screen Size

Bad: Back to frequent Android lag.

Question: Shouldn't the Note 2 smoke the Nexus 7 in performance? If its Samsung bloat that holds it back, why don't they just ditch the whole bloatware thing. Fools.

Why not flash it? The crap samsung does to their phones is sad..

thought about doing it, then figured that the update might come within a week or so since everyone seems to be saying it on all the sites I visit. And I don't trust a third party not-for-profit build. If something breaks, then I have to pay for it.

Well right now CM is already on 4.2.2 and you can create a backup incase something was to go wrong and revert back to the original state. It really does help with the lagginess and worth it. I bought 2 S3's one for my gf and myself and flash both 2 weeks later. I just couldnt deal with is lagginess and the slow performance. Why would the S3 perform so horrible with specs like this? ya know?

remember, i am andriod noob, will this remove all the samsung crap and will everything still work? Would it be a "pure google" thing then? Read some things that went wrong or got broken. Would love to use photoshpere on the note 2...

So was i am. The s3 was my very first android phone. I was a windows phone 7 user before. :p I recommend watching a lot of youtube videos before doing anything and then some quick reading. You would have to make sure to download the correct rom for your carrier as well. Rooting the phone is the first thing you need to do as well. Simply search on Youtube "root galaxy note 2 for "T-mobile" for example. Surely you will find tons of videos :) and yes it will be pure android experience...photosphere? I'm not sure if any developer got that to work yet but im sure others would know this answer since I dont use it myself.

I have Note 2 myself and been using LiquidSmooth 2.5RC ROM since a month. I can honestly say that i dont miss Samsung bloat any more. The best part is the phone is lot smoother than before. But I suspect Mali400 is a $hit gpu. That's why it stutters even in CM10.1 based stock ROMs. I also installed exFat mod so that I have read and write access to my 64gb ext SD card.

Use triangle away to reset ROM counter and use ODIN to flash stock firmware to make your phone appear unmodified to avail warranty.

What is killing your Note II experience: Touchwiz and its bloatware

Do yourself a favor, root your phone and install a rom that will provide you the REAL Jelly Bean experience. CyanogenMod 10.1, LiquidSmooth, CarbonRom, SlimBean Rom, etc.

Last november, I broke my iPhone 4S and I got a S3. I wasn?t impressed at all by this phone in the first 2 or 3 days (laggy, poor battery life, etc.) and I came close to return it to buy a new iPhone. I finally decided to give CyanogenMod a try before making a decision, and trust me, now this thing flies! Best phone I owned tbh.

I can?t understand why Samsung, HTC, etc. tries so hard to ruin the Android experience with their bloatware...

Hmmmmm... I will say my Note2 - out of the box with TouchWiz - never lagged. Has your carrier possibly added their own junk at all?

But yes, there is no way in hell that phone should lag, so flash it ASAP!

No lag here either.

The only problem I can see with rooting a Note 2 is the loss of some of the S-Pen features.

I have a Note 2 as well as my work phone and I've never had issues with lag.

What I have done is I've gone to the Application manager (Settings --> Application manager --> All) and disabled anything that I didn't want or needed running in the background (mostly the Samsung apps). This is time consuming because you'll have to look up what some of those apps/processes do. Once they're disabled, they stay disabled until you re-enable them or factory reset. They stay disabled even on a power cycle.

And of course, you have the option of rooting your Note 2 and installing a custom ROM. XDA is the best place to start. You'll have a choice of install a ROM based on the Samsung ROMs or AOSP ROMs. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. The best thing to do is to read through the topics and get a general idea and see where you want to go with it.

Actually, if someone does find a good ROM for a note2, i would be very interested also....since the moded ones right now dont fully support the device and all the features.

I am running Project AOSP 1.3 (yes I know I need to update).  Please tell me what modded rom you are using, and what is missing?

None here either. And if you root you'll loose a lot of camera stuff too.

Confusing Rooting with flashing a ROM?

Depends wholly on what camera app they put as default.

That's true. Any TW based ROM will have the default Samsung camera app and filters but if you use a none TW ROM you will lose that. I used CleanROM and it was great. Tried Carbon ROM and while I liked the speed and Android 4.2.2 I missed the nice Samsung camera app.

    • You're right that it does not follow the plain meaning of the word, but in this context, it is a legal term defined in 49 U.S.C. Kind of how "wire fraud" laws apply even if a physical wire was not used. Given that it is codified in law, and it isn't just automotive journalists that don't understand evolving technology, I highly doubt congress would change a well understood term just because technology makes the term slightly less actuate.
    • This is exactly why I keep saying we are not ready for human free self-driving. These little "bugs" are may seem like random one-offs. There was also the Waymo that drove between police with drawn weapons and the suspect they were pointing them at. From a software perspective it is easy to understand how those extremely rare situations may not have been programed for, but that is the point. If AI needs to be told to watch out for every possible contingency, then it can never be successful. There will always be the possibility of a first encounter that the AI needs to understand to avoid.

    • Recycle Bin has been broken for literal YEARS now. The setting to delete files older than 30 days from the bin which is on by default doesn't even work. I have files older than 4 months in it and they are just there still...
