Taylor-Johnson to Direct Fifty Shades of Grey

After much speculation within Hollywood, Universal has found their Fifty Shades of Grey director. The studio has announced that Sam Taylor-Johnson will helm the film adaptation of the best-selling book.

Taylor-Johnson's sole feature credit as a director to date is for the young John Lennon bio film Nowhere Boy, which starred her husband Aaron Taylor-Johnson, a.k.a. Kick-Ass. With the news of his wife's getting the Fifty Shades gig, rumors already started to spread this afternoon that Aaron would be pursuing the male lead in the film (that of Christian). But The Wrap's sources say that won't be the case. Additionally, the site reports that director Darren Aronofsky was offered Fifty Shades of Grey a month ago but passed.

Fifty Shades weirdly began life as Twilight fan fiction by author E. L. James before she rewrote it, got it published, and it became a huge hit. It's been called "Mommy Porn" by some, due to its mature and erotic themes and the perception that it is popular among, well, mommies.

Here's Universal's logline on the film: "Fifty Shades of Grey follows the relationship of 27-year-old billionaire Christian Grey and college student Anastasia Steele. Subsequent novels in the series, Fifty Shades Darker (September 2011) and Fifty Shades Freed (January 2012) explore the couple?s deepening relationship." Huh, uh, huh, uh -- they said "deepening."
