The series, from creator Rob Thomas, starred Bell as the titular Mars, a young student who, growing up with a detective for a father, moonlit as a private investigator. I might just give the movie a go :) Give the show a shot. I thought the same as you before I watched it. The first season is dark. There is some amount of bubble gum on the surface but the root of the first season is a murder and a rape. Any lightness just makes a dark under current better. The first season is neo-noir.
