Mystery substance turns family pool neon yellow

The Rush family in Ponca City, Oklahoma woke up on July 13th to see that their pool water, normally blue, was bright yellow.

 Nineteen-year-old Darian Rush told KFOR NewsChannel 4, ?I thought someone was just like playing a prank on us, just dumped paint in our pool.?

According to Ponca City Police, the previous night, vandals broke into the family?s backyard and poured chemicals into the above ground pool.

A reward of $1000 is being offered to anyone with information about the crime.

 Sherry Bowers of the Ponca City PD said, ?I?ve been here a really long time and I have never seen anything like this.?

Darian is confused by the cause of the vandalism, ?I don?t really know. I don?t know anybody that I didn?t think really hated us that much to do that.?

The damage was not isolated to just the pool water. Damage was done to the pool lining, to the water pump, and the adjacent lawn.

The repair will cost the family thousands of dollars which is something that, Lona Rush, a single mother with two jobs, cannot afford.

To make matters worse, two weeks after the incident, the color has not dulled and the pool is now giving off an awful smell.

 Grandmother Lorraine Calicchio said, ?The agricultural department is not going to let her to drain this -- it's going to have to be hauled off after they figure out exactly what it is."

Water sample analysis is being conducted by the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture to determine what chemicals were dumped and why they turned the water yellow.

There are many questions that should be answered...

 

How do they know it was done by someone else through a break-in? Damage was done to the yard and such, but how?

 

What was the chemcal analysis? They would have it after two weeks. Obviously it isn't an air hazard, or contact hazard as people are walking on the edge of it with no protective gear. The liner was damaged.. was that due to the chemical, or the dumping?

 

Why did this make national news? Who contacted the news in the first place?

 

Does the family have any immediate enemies or folks that would target them?

 

Does anyone realize by shocking the pool too much (or using too much sodium dichloro-s-triazinetrione dihydrate in some normal tap water), you can turn the water green or yellow, or a combination of the two?

Insurance for a pool, really? I have one the exact same size that cost me $350 and around $150 to fill up.  Last time I checked, $500 was not thousands, so she could maybe afford the pool, but the cleanup of this may cost her more than she has.

Every item on my property is insured.  Every item worth over ?250 ($300) is named and listed.  You say "Really?" to the idea of insuring a pool.  I say "Really?" to the idea of not insuring one!
