A driver plowed into pedestrians on Venice's famed boardwalk Saturday evening, striking at least a dozen people and killing one, authorities said.

Another person was critically injured, two more suffered serious injuries and the rest sustained minor injuries, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said. He said a total of 10 people accepted transportation to hospitals.

Los Angeles police said late Saturday that the driver of what witnesses described as a dark-colored sedan fled the scene.

Late Saturday, authorities said a person of interest was being questioned in connection with the incident. (Fox News reports he is a former resident of Colorado.)

That person's name and gender were not released. Humphrey said his agency had been told only that the Los Angeles Police Department's Robbery-Homicide division was on the scene and that it remained "a very active investigation."

Witnesses said they believed the driver was traveling about 60 mph ? others cited slower speeds ? when the crash occurred about 6 p.m. near the boardwalk's intersection with Dudley Avenue, just before the sun began to set on the tourist haven. Witnesses said "scores of people" were walking along the beach.

"The vehicle appeared to be moving purposefully down the boardwalk, according to witnesses," Humphrey said. He said firefighters responding to the scene thought the driver might have had some kind of medical emergency, but the vehicle did not stop. He said the driver "is not known" to the LAFD.

"A car plowed through the boardwalk," said Daniel Regidor, 50, who was running nearby when the crash occurred.

"People screaming, running. I was half a mile from the scene, but you could see just this mass of people trying to get out of the way.... Just a lot of people screaming.... It was horrible.

"I saw somebody flying up in the air," Regidor said. "When I came upon the scene, there were a bunch of people on the ground, bloodied."

Daniel Jenkins, 19, was selling medical marijuana-related art and souvenirs on the pedestrian walkway and witnessed the incident.

Jenkins said he saw a blue Charger turn off a side street onto the pedestrian walkway going about 35 mph.

"He started basically losing control," Jenkins said.

He said he saw the vehicle hit a woman who sells turtles and a man who appeared to be homeless.

"All the turtles flew everywhere," as did mannequins outside of storefronts, Jenkins said..

He said the vehicle appeared to speed up after it hit the pedestrians and "zoomed all the way down" for several blocks.

The LAPD had no immediate description of the car or driver, and officers at the LAPD's Pacific Station would give no information on the crash.

The famed boardwalk is a cultural hub known for its eccentricities. Galleries, restaurants, tattoo shops, skateboard parks and the famous outdoor weight room known as Muscle Beach attract locals and tourists alike.

The crash spurred many, including nearby lifeguards, to race "to the aid of strangers," Humphrey said.

And that's relevant how?

The given examples were "mass" killings, or in this case an attempt at one. That is how they are classified vs. "spree" or "serial" killings. Look it up.

Certainly an odd perspective to try and put on it.

Not if you've researched multiple homicides past reading/watching the news. The devices used to accomplish a mass killing can vary, but the goal of the perps psychopathology is the same.

Murder charge in beach crash

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A Colorado man was left "profoundly depressed" after he drove his car into the weekend masses at the Venice Beach boardwalk, killing a woman and injuring 16 people, said his lawyer, who called it "a horrible accident."

"I don't believe he intentionally tried to hit anybody," said public defender Philip Dube, who is representing Nathan Louis Campbell, 38. "He's profoundly sad, he is profoundly depressed, that he has potentially ended somebody's life."

Campbell pleaded not guilty Tuesday to one count of murder, 16 counts of assault with a deadly weapon, and 17 counts of hit-and-run.

A felony complaint said Campbell acted willfully, but it provided no explanation for why he allegedly maneuvered around a vehicle barrier early Saturday evening and plowed into tourists and vendors on the popular walkway along the Pacific.

    • Anybody that thinks flying cars were possible are idiots. Everyone would basically need a pilot licence, can you imagine how insane and dangerous that would be, people can barely handle driving on land safely right now.

    • Waymo recalls self-driving software after cars enter closed freeway work zones by Paul Hill Waymo, the self-driving car maker owned by Alphabet – the parent company of Google –, has recalled some of its fifth-generation Automated Driving Systems (ADS). It did so after some of its cars drove through closed construction zones. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the affected vehicles were capable of driving through a closed freeway construction zone and continuing to drive at speed. The listing on the NHTSA website says that Waymo is currently developing a solution to fix this issue, but in the meantime, freeway driving is being restricted. Waymo will update its ADS software so that vehicles can detect when they can avoid entering construction zones. According to the Safety Recall Report, on April 20, 2026, Waymo’s Field Safety Committee began meetings reviewing an event from April 11, 2026, and five events from April 19, 2026, where Waymo’s autonomous vehicles didn’t recognize and drove past ramp closure signs into the pre-planned freeway construction zones. This took place in Phoenix, Arizona. Separately, on May 18, 2026, seven Waymo vehicles entered freeway lanes with active construction in the San Francisco Bay Area by driving between cones that were placed to show the lane was closed. On the back of both of these events, Waymo restricted freeway driving until it could address the issue. In June, Waymo’s Safety Board reviewed the issue and additional information related to ADS performances around construction zones; then, as a result, it decided to conduct a recall. This development is not good for Waymo as it adds to a growing list of technical hiccups its cars have experienced. Ultimately, it will lead to more scrutiny from lawmakers around the world who will be more cautious about letting autonomous vehicles on their roads without tighter regulation. For readers in areas where Waymo operates, does this news make you more wary about stepping into one of these vehicles?
