First of all cloud costs money, if anyone will pay for it it will be you.

The fact that microsoft has Azure cloud service doesnt mean anything to your games that come from EA or other publishers

If you think that games can ofload AI or other parts of the game proccessing to the cloud, think again.

The only cloud support I see for XBOX is based on skydrive, and thats it

The PS3 had monstrously better CPU and RAM "spec" than the 360, but does it perform better? Absolutely not.

These comparisons mean absolutely nothing, and people really need to let it go.

Actually MS has already stated that they intend to give the Azure cloud servers to AAA games for free so they make the most out of it. It wouldnt cost MS much to do that as it would be very cheap to absorb there own costs

That would be insane if MS had a discrete GPU with 2048 shader and 2GB GDDR5 ram slapped inbetween the APU and ESRAM. It would destroy sonys ps4. but seeing as they said they wont be making a loss on it i cant see it happening cus the part would cost to much making the console really expensive

There's a massive difference between on paper and real world performance. Especially when it comes to specs and architecture. Again, don't take this as I'm downplaying the PS3, just needs to be stated.

 

Kudos to Albert Penello for these comments, they really needed to be said. What intrigues me is the "not fully understood" comment, even though there was an architecture panel.

That's the thing. It can't be proven unless there are benchmarks released that don't favor specific hardware or only just specific components. It looks like everybody's throwing around speculation as if it were fact, especially the PS fans that are parasiting N4G and NeoGAF.

They are all looking at two parts of the entire box, the base GPU part and the RAM and clinging to it as if it were the last straw.

The Xbox One's customized hardware is definitely more streamlined in architecture if you look at it and especially if coded for well, which could mean that both consoles would be almost equally powerful IMHO, but this is also speculation without a proper benchmark.

 

But you are right, it's all about the games and if the difference is so minute that it can't be noticed by the general public then the point is moot anyway.

I have known this for a long time.  I guess people take numbers and run with them and I get why they do, but as I said before this is what is really going on......

 

The PS4 is like a lower mid-end PC and is mainly off-the-shelf PC hardware.  Some things have been modified a bit like GPGPU and other things, but it's 95% of an off the shelf PC.

The PS4 architecture is pretty straight forward and simple design and you will see some big performance gains over time, but the XB1 will have those too.

 

The Xbox One is 95% non-off-the-shelf PC.  With only a small part of it being off-the-shelf.  The Xbox one GPU isn't as powerful as the PS4 on paper. 

This is fact and it is a fact that most people fall into the trap of believing paper numbers over real-world performance.

 

1) The Microsoft architecture is more efficient than a normal PC architecture.  Microsoft made D3D 11.x, they know all about it because they created the entire API.   They optimized the "XB1 mono driver" for performance.

2) The XB1 can offload processes to other processors and can also do GPGPU, but it's not required.  The more PS4 uses GPGPU, the less they use the GPU for

    graphics processing and they have to do this because they don't have the processors that XB1 has.  The PS4 has more Compute Units dedicated for GPGPU features, but again the more you use of the other CUs the more things can suffer.

3)  The ESRAM can be a little more flexible than what Sony uses the GDDR5 for.

 

I really never even mentioned any performance increase (53 Mhz GPU boost or the 150 Mhz CPU boost either)

 

I also haven't actually mentioned the "server processing" yet, which will come later.   Halo 5 will probably be the first title that really uses this and people are going to be fascinated by what is coming.

The hardware is powerful for both, but the new thing is server processing.  This isn't a marketing trick; it is real.

I am sure Sony will be fine.  However, the server processing is honestly the most exciting thing I can think about.

Sure, no titles will really use it like it should be used, but this is a game changer.   I am looking for this for an open world A.I. using the processing.

 

I hate video games, because not only do I love playing them, but I would love to create a company around it.  ;-p

 

I seriously know what I would do, but you just don't make money on it like you would in the mobile phone/data industry.

 

You know what I also like though, not having an inventory.   Having an inventory is very tricky for a business, and with the Xbox One and PS4, you don't have to have a retail Blu-ray disk or a case or an instruction manual.

It's all just digitally based and you could sell your quality game for $40 online and just reap a lot of money with most money going into salaries and marketing.

He actually says pretty clearly that the Xbox One will perform the same or better in the real world, which we've already seen at the expos.

Oh please Mr. Penello, You are assuming that people working on OpenGL aren't goint to optimize it for PS4. State of the fact is that some highly influential gaming companies already exposed OpenGL as a more optimized platform, even on Windows. I can bet that Sony has been working on OpenGL for a long time, to enhance performance of PS4 even further. PS4 having a PC like architecture will benefit all three parties included...developers, PC gamers/users, and PS4 owners and that is the biggest advantage of PS4.

So, you haven't read it then. It does pass muster and that's Panellos point here - if the two were as similar as you say than the ps4 would legitimately be 30% more powerful and we would see that pretty clearly. Fact is that's just not true and from what we've seen so far, X1 games look better.

But I'm more than happy to wait a couple months to see things in person.

The PS3 WAS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FROM EVERYONE ELSE!!! using that as a testament for the x1 not working out only makes you look like a moron. The basic CPU architecture can be the same but the actual PCB choices with buffers etc can make a HUGE difference.

So much fail in this thread it hurts. GPU is not as big a factor as people make out, on PC with a haswell OC the cpu is the cap not the gpu in a lot of games (the worst being planetside 2, ha lets see that on ps4)

 Industry will certainly not wrap their business moves based on tiredness and boredom, but on efficiency. This generation of console hardware will turn things upside down for Miscrosoft. It won't be an overnight move, but as I see it, since PS4 is esentially PC, why would developers for it be bothered to make a DX version of the game when it can run in OpenGL on any platform, including Windows. Legacy engines will certainly continue to use DX, but for companies writing their own new engines, DX has no value any more, as OpenGL and DX are practically the same feature wise and why spending extra time and money developing a dual engine, when the existing written assuming to use OpenGL can be used everywhere, except on Xbox One.

1st party will always natively code, 3rd party could just use an engine that outputs to both that way we get the DX boost.

Single engines covering several platforms is the way its going, not back the way to only 1 option. Unity etc all output to mobiles etc all with a common engine at a higher level.

Why are you having such a hard time with this?

 

Would you program a game that requires the current generation processor?  The latest card from nvidia or amd?  A crazy amount of memory (so you will need a 64-bit computer and OS)?

 

I do not need a multi-thousand dollar set up to play WoW.  Why?  They created the game to run at the lowest common denominator to still satisfy their needs of the game.  They did not build it to require SLI or require a very very expensive setup.

 

Why are games still offering resolutions below 720?

 

As a developer, you program your game to where you can get the most audience.  Therefore, you develop for the lowest common denominator.

I'm not saying this is exactly the same, but If you were to use a car analogy... Is this not like taking a bugatti Veyron against a modern day F1 car. Just because on paper the veyron has much "higher" numbers when it comes to BHP, the F1 car is always going to wipe the floor with the veyron because it does more with less?

So you're telling me a basic OpenGL wrapper which sits on a bulky modified version of CentOS can outperform a 100% optimized version of DirectX which sits on HyperVM instances? 

 

Comparing OpenGL on the PC to anything on the PS3/4 is ridiculous.

If that were true the PC version of multi-plats would never have better graphics.

 

I've played plenty of multi-platform games where the PC didn't have better graphics.

    • Microsoft brings Claude to its own Azure infrastructure, powered by Nvidia GB300 Blackwell by Karthik Mudaliar Anthropic's Claude models are now generally available in Microsoft Foundry on Azure and are running on Nvidia's GB300 Blackwell Ultra systems. Nvidia wrote in its announcement that the models are hosted on Microsoft Azure and accelerated by GB300 Blackwell Ultra GPUs, with Quantum-X800 InfiniBand networking used to support larger agentic systems and specialized sub-agents that can operate across business domains. This is great for customers and enterprises that want to build autonomous and domain-specific AI agents using Claude without moving outside Microsoft’s cloud platform. Microsoft currently offers Claude models in Foundry in two forms: “Hosted on Azure,” which runs end-to-end on Azure infrastructure and is generally available, and “Hosted on Anthropic infrastructure,” which remains in preview. This separation is quite important for organizations that have procurement, compliance, data processing, or internal governance requirements tied to Azure. Anthropic currently has 11 Claude models listed in Microsoft Foundry, including Opus 4.8, Sonnet 4.6, and even the unavailable Mythos and Fable models. Billing is handled through Claude Consumption Units (CCUs). Microsoft says CCU is an invoicing unit for Claude models in Foundry, with token usage converted using Anthropic’s published per-model token rates.     • WhatsApp is getting usernames, and you can reserve your preferred one now by Fiza Ali Sharing your phone number isn't always something you want to do, especially with people you've just met. Whether it's someone from a class, a local community group, or a sports team chat, handing over your number can feel like giving away more personal information than necessary. That's exactly the problem WhatsApp is trying to solve with its upcoming usernames feature. The company has announced that users can now reserve a unique WhatsApp username ahead of the feature's wider rollout later this year. Once usernames become available, they'll let people connect without revealing their phone numbers. It's a change that makes a lot of sense for group chats. Right now, everyone in the group can see your phone number. With usernames enabled, that won't necessarily be the case when someone contacts you for the first time. WhatsApp says it's opening username reservations early because more than three billion people use the app, meaning plenty of people are likely to want the same usernames. Reserving one now gives users a better chance of securing the name they actually want before the feature launches more broadly.     • When I think about a network, there are really two aspects, the hardware and the wiring. So here is what I would do for both. Wiring: Use Cat6A for the patch panel, outlets, and all structured cables (cables installed in walls). Run plenty of Wireless Access Point (WAP) cables, as a general rule, assume a signal can only pass through 2-3 walls and can't pass through a floor (that is conservative, but trust me on this if you want strong WiFi)  Cat6 patch cables are fine for now if you don't plan to run 10gig, those are easy to replace later if needed. Run OS2 single-mode fiber to anywhere you think you may have a server or sub-switch. (yes, single-mode for everything on a small network, don't mess with multimode unless you are at a scale where that minor cost and power savings will matter). If you really want to future proof, also run fiber to any high density WAP locations, it is likely that WiFi 8 and beyond WAPs will push the limits of 10g. Run 6-12 pairs of single-mode fiber between your MDF and the building's MDF, even if you only need 1 or 2 pairs now, those extra pairs will pay off down the road. Hardware: (its easy to say "get all the features incase you need them", so instead of futureproofing, I am going to take approach of suggesting areas worth investing in, and areas you can save money). Don't overspend thinking you need every feature on every port. You don't need 10g on every port, you don't need PoE on every port. Don't overspend on redundancy either, unless you are ready to buy two of everything, don't waste money buying two of some things and not others. Dual power supplies are worthwhile, but probably not HA or multi-path redundancy.  Get 1 "distribution layer" switch that your router/firewall will connect to as well as all your access layer switches below. This should be a fully managed 10g+ switch with a combination of copper and SPF ports, a few 25g uplink ports are nice for this switch. Given that you said it is a small network, I suggest also using that distribution layer switch for servers and WAPs, meaning it will need PoE. Speaking of wireless, get good professional tri-band WAPs, and either turn on the band stirring options, or limit 2.4 to an IoT only SSID. This will provide a solid WiFi capable nearly everything but the highest of bandwidth clients...you could even consider skipping wiring workstations depending on usage. Access layer switch for workstations and printers can be cheaper switches, 2.5g is a good sweet spot between price and future proofing, but even 1g is fine for most individual clients (the kind that could probably be fine on WiFi). You can consider saving a little on access layer switches by only getting 1 PoE switch for whatever needs it (remember your WAPs are connecting to the distribution switch, not here), and non-PoE for your workstations, because desk phones are falling out of favor. You can also save money here by not buying managed switches if you don't need them--but really do some soul searching there, if you go this route, then anything that isn't on your workstation VLAN would either need to be connected to the distribution switch, or its own access layer switch. Also, don't feel like you need a fancy fabric stacking switches for your access layer, that is the point of the higher-end distribution layer, to remove the need for things like that at this level. Home Hardware: I'm realizing the above assumed an office setting, if this if for your house and home lab then the above still applies, but you'll probably want everything managed and PoE, just because, but you probably also don't need multiple access layer switches. If your total port count is below 24, just skip separating distribution layer and access layer and just get one nice switch with the features you want. If you are at the point of considering a 48-port switch, I would instead get a nice high-end distribution switch for things that need it, and cheaper access layer switches with specs based on the needs of connected devices. For home use, don't worry about home running every device to the main switch, there is nothing wrong with running sub-switches for your media areas and office, those essentially become your access layer, just look for sub-switches with a 10g uplink so sharing bandwidth isn't an issue. Just make sure you always connect them to your distribution/main switch, don't daisy chain, the path should never have more steps than Client>Access>Distribution>Firewall>Internet or Client>Access>Distribution>Server if it is local.

It is based on professional accounting principles to ensure balanced books and accurate reports. GnuCash can keep track of your personal finances in as much detail as you prefer. If you are just starting out, use GnuCash to keep track of your checkbook. You may then decide to track cash as well as credit card purchases to better determine where your money is being spent. When you start investing, you can use GnuCash to help monitor your portfolio. Buying a vehicle or a home? GnuCash will help you plan the investment and track loan payments. If your financial records span the globe, GnuCash provides all the multiple-currency support you need. Between 5.15 and 5.16, the following bugfixes were accomplished: Bug 421610 - RFE: Include logical dates for View->Filter by "date range"The Select Range section of the Date tab of the register's Filter By dialog box is changed to provide relative, specific date, or days ago options for the start and end of the filter range. The Show number of days item label is changed to Show from days ago to better reflect what it does. Bug 436105 - esc key not working as expected in register: Enable the escape key to cancel a field edit. Bug 797384 - Gnucash doesn't handle commodity prices with big numerator/denominator properly. Bug 798004 - Next gen UI for stock transactions Bug 799314 - Add "enter now" option in scheduled transaction editor. tab to allow users to select the scheduled transactions to be included in a “Since Last Run…” window. If there are no instances of a selected transaction triggered by today’s date, the next instance is triggered. Bug 799751 - autocomplete crash Bug 799759 - Users can't Enable entries via Checkboxes on Scheduled Transactions PageAllow the Enabled box in the list of scheduled transactions to be operated instead of having to open the transaction editor dialog and change the Enabled checkbox. Also added use of the Name column as the secondary column sort for all the other columns. Add new Finance::Quote source Finnhub.io: Free API key (personal/non-professional use) available at https://finnhub.io. Set FINNHUB_API_KEY environment variable to API key to use this source. As of June 2026, free tier API limit is 60 API calls/minute. The Investment Lots report has new optional columns for Computed Annual Growth Rate. Python Bindings: Improved translation of primary object (Account, Transaction, Split, etc.) so that they can be treated as normal Python objects. This is accomplished with SWIG magic so no existing code is obsoleted. Python Bindings: Better conversion of GLists to Python lists. Python Bindings: Destroy the QofSession in the Python Session dtor to prevent leaving the database locked. [engine] Add first-class online_id accessors for Split and Account and make them available to Python bindings, removing the unused Transaction online_id property. Improve C++ implementation of QofBook. Correct the Doxygen doc for qof_instance_get/set_kvp. [gnc-log-replay.cpp] fix incorrect guid dump Add some Boost library requirements needed by libgnucash-guile to CMakeLists.txt so that missing feature will fail at configure time. Use Compile-time Regular Expressions instead of std::regex in gnc-filepath-utils.cpp and instead of boost::regex in the CSV importer, with the CTRE v3.11.1 header added to borrowed [gnc-filepath-utils.cpp] null check char* arguments Add ChartJS licenses. Removed AEX from list of commodities. euronext.com is now using JS based anti-webscraping. [report-core] always offer options summary in reports. This is useful to debug reports. The Add options summary option is removed because it's no longer optional. Remove remaining obsolete IMContext from sheet Fix blurry text in HiDPI offscreen-rendered widgets Add port field to database connection dialog: The convention of appending the port number after the host isn't obvious. When editing a split in the register treat the account as being changed only if it isn't the one selected before editing instead of if the user performed an edit Return immediately from qof_book_destroy if hash_of_collections is null. If qof_book_destroy is called on a QofBook* freshly created with qof_book_new (usually because it was used to create a session that now must be destroyed) it would try to empty the non-existent hash tables, crashing. Clean up Flathub metadata to solve warnings at flatpak build time. Be consistent in naming GncPluginPage and GncPluginPageRegister HTML: Remove unimplemented function declarations. [gnc-html.cpp] remove unused buggy string conversion functions Convert libgnc-html to C++ Apply -Wall -Werr -Wmissing-prototypes to C++ compilation on Windows and fix the resulting errors.
