Samsung says its next-gen smartphones will have 64-bit processors too

Well that didn't take long.  If Apple has it then that means that Samsung will too.  Wonder what their design will look like??

 

 

 

Samsung's mobile business head JK Shin has said that the company's next smartphones will feature a 64-bit CPU, according to the Korea Times

So only iPhone users will have a 64bit e-boner until then? Fun times ahead.

 

Although next-gen Samsung phones launch everyday so he probably means next week.

Where's the announcement for their fingerprint scanner?  The GS5 will undoubtedly have it along with an 8-core CPU...

I think we've gotten to the point where no one is actually bringing anything new to the game, it's moarrr specs, moarrrr useless features ( Though I see how the fingerprint unlock is usefull), :/ Man when I first saw the iPhone 4 I was like "what an awesome design"... Every other phone has just been meh... ( I got a galaxy s4, because my 4 was beat up...)

You only need a 64bit processor if you're going to be addressing more than 4gb of RAM. No phone has that much RAM, and won't for a couple of years yet, if then.

 

Also, currently all mobile apps are 32bit apps. That means they're going to have to either be recompiled, or run via some kind of emulation layer (like the WoW64 library in Windows) to run, and that's going to be slower than running them on a 32bit processor.

Pretty much, an average joe will never ever care about it... But come to think of it, this might be an apple strategy to bring in more "spec hoarders".

You have no clue how 64 bit works. I thought by now people would know it's not just about memory. Go visit our great friend Google and educate yourself on the matter....please:)

My motorola atrix from 2 years ago has a finger print scanner.  I never use it.

But wait, wouldn't the operating system have to be designed around a 64bit processor as well, in order to at least take full advantage of these capabilities? Apple has full control over iOS, where as Samsung doesn't. Would this not be an issue?

Yup, which is why apps will be "emulated" or something like that?

I used the fingerprint scanner in the atrix, it was poorly implemented and garbage.

Actually WoW64 on windows runs 32 bit apps generally as fast as if the OS was 32 (since its not emulation they're actually running in a 32 bit windows on windows) and in some cases it actually runs 32 bit apps faster on windows 64 bit than if they had been run on windows 32 bit. Thanks to more efficient memory adressing and som stuff.

    • Apple finally brings the slider for Liquid Glass and many other changes by Aditya Tiwari Apple kicked off the official live stream of the WWDC 2026 annual developer event. The company began its latest wave of announcements with changes to the controversial Liquid Glass design language, which debuted last year across Apple's entire software ecosystem. A lot of people didn't like Liquid Glass when it first arrived on iPhone and other devices last year. The devices were plagued with transparency issues and whatnot. While Apple improved things over the year, it has now added a new Liquid Glass slider that lets you switch the transparency from clear to opaque. In other words, you can choose the amount of Liquid Glass you want to see on your iPhone instead of an on/off switch, which would only give you two choices. The sidebars now expand to the edge of the window. When you scroll the UI sideways, the refraction continues beneath the sidebar rather than being cut off at the boundary. Moreover, sidebar icons keep their color. Apple has changed the way Liquid Glass is rendered across the system. There is a separation between different layers, which makes buttons in the toolbar stand out from the background. Apple said it "deeply appreciates" the feedback it received from users and has made adjustments to Liquid Glass. New customizations allow Liquid Glass to improve contrast and enable a more vibrant appearance. The new icons have sharper edges, which addresses an old complaint that iOS 26 icons look blurry at smaller sizes. The upgraded Liquid Glass, Apple said, is building on last year's design upgrades by "integrating additional layers of Liquid Glass directly into the artwork itself." Apple's upgraded design language is available on iOS 27, which is arriving this year with no changes to the list of supported iPhones.
