Impressions of Deus Ex: Invisible War Demo

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I know it?s only a demo (and *hopefully* not a reflection of the final product) but... was anyone else completely under-whelmed by it?

Here are just a few observations from my first play :-

1) The voice over?s sound almost amateur-ish

2) Even at what I would call low-ish settings (800x600, medium quality) my 2ghz machine with a GF4 TI4600 was barely getting 25fps

3) There is a distinct lack of customisable options on the menu (video & audio)

4) The HUD is very intrusive (even on minimal mode)

Like I said, I know it?s only a demo and the overall ?feel & flow? of the game won?t come through, but I still expected way more than this...

Well you've got a better impression then me... I can't even play it since my graphics card doesn't have Pixel Shaders. There is a very negative vibe about this demo spreading around the PC Gaming community, there is even a petition about it going around already. How dissapointing, shame I can't run it to make my own mind up! :crazy:

I didn't realise that it needs a GF3 and upwards to play (even at the lowest setttings)... that's a bit harsh me thinks. I'm all for advancing games to take into account newer technology, but that's going to cut a LOT of people out...

Just been over to Forum Planet and it get's a bit of a roasting there to.

I played it for 2 minutes and I threw it out the window. Well, not literally but you know what I mean. It runs like crud and I can't stand games that are choppy even at lowest settings. Well, lets see how the full version turns out, but I ain't gonna buy a $500 video card for just one game. I'd have to have a pretty damn good reason.

Loved the original, so this sequel has been on my wish list for years, but very disappointed with demo. With so little time left until full product is released, I'm afraid that what we see is what we get. Don't think they're gonna change much now...

As many others has pointed out, this plays and looks like a pure console port and it's amazing how "low quality" everything looks even on a high-end system.

I've decided to buy this one for XBox instead... there's absolutely no reason to get the PC version when it's so obvious that they haven't made _any_ effort to make it different than the console one.

As for the PC, I guess I'll have to install Deus Ex 1 and play it again... imho it actually looks and feels better than this new demo.

seriously though...i get better FPS in doom3 and half life2...other times my fps is high staring at the same thing...and then drops...and i see no change, needs a lot of fixing, seems like the worst demo ive ever come across, ninja turtles i got a few weeks ago was BETTER

am i not right in thinking that it auto has FSAA on either 1x/2x/4x and you cant disable it, hence giving crappy performance.

does on mine anyway, cant turn it off. not bothered with disabling in drivers cuz the game should allow disabling!

Yeah, cant disable it in-game. Why did they not label it a beta or alpha? Aaahah, what a mess.

Some things to try. Taken from IONStorm Forums... I recommend a visit :) Seems like this game could get into shape with some simple tweaks.

First of all, disable Bloom in the video settings to get rid of that fugly glow filter.

I also run the game with vsynch disabled, FSAA set to "application preference" in catalyst, Multisample x 1 in game.

These other settings can be found in default.ini

The HUD is actually meant to be further at the edges on PC, by default it is at Xbox settings in the demo.

FOV__d=68

Then there is the "mouse lag" people have noticed.

MouseLagThreshold=0

Some other tweaks that gave me a boost in fps and quality.

DetailTextures=True

UseDirectDraw=True

Use32BitTextures=True

DetailedTextures=True

VolumetricLighting=True

Overbright=False (only if u want the lighting to be more... moody)

These settings at least made it smoother for me to play. I don't see any difference with the volumetriclighting, but some ppl say they do, so try it out. I used to have 15-20fps, but now I have constant 40-50... much more enjoyable :)

Deus Ex developer?

HAHAHA I was thinking the same thing...I downloaded it but I havent tried it...I keep hearing all this TERRIBLE stuff about it and after how awesome the 1st one was I dont want some crappily concieved demo to ruin my impression of it

I actually liked it.. Performance aside. If your computer cant run a game thats your problem, and its not as if the unreal warefare engine is made for budget line computers..

Onto actual gameplay hacking seemed to be far too easy, and I dont like the console style lack of mouse input menus but thats a small thing I could get used to.

Now the graphics thing is a funny one. At times the graphics look amazing, but then in the same second it can look horrible. Thats another thing you need to get used to.

I get the feeling its taken a step away from the recent nice but unrealistic looking games (ala GTA 3 + Vice City) and gone for a more real and gritty feel. Kind of like Max Payne without the photo textures (never liked it when people use those - seems like a cheap way to make a game look nice)

The demo is short though, and you dont really get a lot out of it. I think I like it though, but it doesnt seem to have the same depth or interaction that deus ex had, which is a shame. In the bar you cant use your guns, originally you could but it would get you into trouble and you would have to either run away or kill people.

I'm gonna play some more before I decide. Its not nearly as bad as some people are making out, but it doesnt feel like Deus Ex either..

We will see.

    • Edifier S3000MKII hi-fi audiophile grade bookshelf speaker is at its lowest price now by Sayan Sen Yesterday we covered a bunch of Dolby Atmos soundbar deals with several ones from Sony, as well as from JBL, Samsung, Polk Audio, and more. You can check them out in this dedicated piece. Those are not audiophile category speakers though as they are built with home theater use in mind. If you are searching for the former then Edifier has its S3000MKII at its lowest price at the moment (purchase link under the specs table down below). This is a two-way bookshelf monitor speaker designed to produce accurate sound. While it may not produce the best high-fidelity audio possible out there, it should still be significantly better than what you will get on soundbars of this price range. As such it will do justice to high-res audio played back through it. The only thing that may feel lacking is sub-bass as Edifier claims the unit can go down to 38 Hz, which should be enough for studio monitor purposes, but not for deep room-shaking rumbling bass. Where this does excel though is in its treble reproduction. With its super-tweeter, it claims to go as high as 40 kHz in the frequency spectrum, which should offer a sense of "air"yness. This is an active speaker which means it packs its own amplfication. It has a top-notch Class D amp that may be able to rival many Class AB designs too in terms of sound reproduction quality. The technical specs of the Edifier S3000MKII are given in the table below: Specification Value RMS Output Power 256W RMS (Treble: 8W × 2, Mid-Low: 120W × 2) Tweeter Driver 107mm × 107mm Planar Magnetic Tweeter Mid-Low Driver 6.5-inch (179mm) Long-Throw Aluminum Diaphragm Driver Frequency Response 38Hz – 40kHz Signal-to-Noise Ratio ≥ 85dB (A) Bluetooth Version Bluetooth 5.0 Bluetooth Codec Qualcomm® aptX™ HD Wireless Speaker Link Proprietary 5.8GHz wireless connection between speakers Supported Hi-Res Audio Hi-Res Audio Certified, up to 24-bit/192kHz Digital Processing XMOS XU216 Digital Signal Processor Audio Inputs Balanced XLR, Optical, Coaxial, USB Type-B, Line In, Bluetooth Input Sensitivity (USB) 400 ± 50mFFs Input Sensitivity (Optical) 400 ± 50mFFs Input Sensitivity (Coaxial) 400 ± 50mFFs Input Sensitivity (Bluetooth) 450 ± 50mFFs Input Sensitivity (Balanced XLR) 1000 ± 50mV Input Sensitivity (Line In) 600 ± 50mV ADC Capability Up to 24-bit/192kHz DSP Capability Up to 24-bit/192kHz DIX Capability Up to 24-bit/216kHz DAC Capability Up to 32-bit/384kHz XMOS Processing Power Up to 2,000 MIPS Edifier S3000MKII Audiophile Active (Powered) Wireless Speakers: $799.99 (Sold by Edifier US, Shipped by Amazon US) If you do not have the kind of budget to spend on the S3000MKII, you can also check out the Edifier R1280Ts which is right now on sale at just $114 (its lowest price in a very long time). • Ignoring the fact that this "colony" kicked the empire of King George's arse during those early years... You are confusing the First Industrial Revolution (which was clearly pulled out of some butt-hurt Brit historian's arse after the fact) with the Second Industrial Revolution (aka now called the Technological Revolution, undoubtedly by that same butt-hurt Brit), which transitioned the world from the UK/UPS Empire to the USA as the world's only superpower. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Industrial_Revolution I hope you realize that I am having big fun here.
