Despite the whole "You're Holding it Wrong" debacle, I think the iPhone 4 was one of the best iPhone releases "innovation" wise.  The screen was remarkable as was the build quality.  My wife is using my old iPhone 4 (she is between phones).  It was a release iPhone 4 and still has phenomenal battery life (arguably the best battery life of any iPhone) and it is in great condition.  Still looks new after 3+ years.

 

I could force the "You're holding it wrong" to occur, but I never had a call drop over it.  Try holding the phone up to your ear while covering that corner.  It isn't exactly comfortable to hold a phone that way up to your ear, and you look like an asshat.  But hey, it's a burn on Apple and it gave something for the anti-Apple folks to harp on to this day.  Funny, I have yet to see a single iPhone 4 owner gripe about it.  Must be because every single iPhone owner is just an iSheep, right?

 

The problem wasn't during calls(unless you used a headset though, or speaker), the problem is that it was kind of a smart phone, and people used it to surf the web and read mails and stuff like that, and then they often ended up holding it that way. or rather they tried to do those things :p

Yeah, no argument there. It dramatically slimmed down the phone and was excellent for the time. Unfortunately Apple has lost its way with the iPhone 5 and 5S, which stuck to the same formula and played it safe. The company hasn't adapted to the demand for larger phones and hasn't been innovating like its competitors.

 

I don't see large phones as an innovation, and that's pretty much all the innovation the other phones have, outside of Sony making all phones waterproof and adding decent cameras, but that's mostly evolutions. 

 

and while a lot of people want bigger phones, the majority don't.

Nope!

Um you guys need to check the Windows Phone store more because there are at least two (unofficial) apps that work really dam well, and have been around since like WP 7.1

gMaps and GMaps + (two different apps)

And they both offer true offline capabilities too.

In another words, "No."

 

I already checked for an official app; I'm aware there are alternatives. Just sought to confirm my findings. Thanks though.

It's not often we see eye to eye, but I agree with you there. We worked so hard to get phones smaller, and now we're going the opposite direction holding television panels to our heads...

You could just use Google Maps on iOS

Yup. There's an app for that:

 

While we?re improving Maps, you can try alternatives by downloading map apps from the App Store like Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps by going to their websites and creating an icon on your home screen to their web app.

 

Of course that was before the Google Maps app had been released.

Plus, I'm assuming that the quality of Apple's Maps data has been somewhat improved in the meantime...

HERE maps has an excellent routing engine, however the data isn't as complete in my area. So therefore, in my situation Google Maps is still the best, however, with HERE maps/Nokia/Navteq/Whatever has the advantage of having full offline maps and saves on data and is needed for areas with crappy/nonexistent coverage.

Nokia took the time to take advantage of (another) Apple Maps goof to promote their own HERE Maps.

apple is too big to really give a flying forck about nokia's fun-poking. this is just sweeter irony for apple.

Doesn't seem like it. I mean just take one look at the colorful new iPhones and iOS7 and its clear that Apple is closely watching Nokia and Windows Phone more than Android. They seem to have resigned themselves to Android's success but with the rate at which Windows Phone is growing, especially outside US where Apple has yet to penetrate the market, they want to stop it in its tracks by copying the major selling points for Lumias.

I thought Google maps had offline caching too. They don't?

Sort of. you can cache an area of a map, though it's not very big and how you do it varies from phone to phone and for some period it required writing a keyword in the search field which made no sense, though they changed it again.

      Thanks for the advice guys, I'll give my current GPU a clean and then run the benchmarks to see how similar it is. Hopefully a bit of a clean-out will help it last a bit longer.

      Microsoft making much needed change to Windows 11, 10 Patch Tuesday security updates by Sayan Sen Recently, Microsoft delivered its latest Defender patches for Windows 11 ISOs. These definitions are released from time to time alongside the general security updates available during Patch Tuesday. Speaking of Defender, the company has now announced another important change that affects how security updates are delivered to enterprise devices running Windows. According to a recent announcement, Microsoft Defender for Endpoint's endpoint detection and response (EDR) updates will no longer be bundled with the monthly Windows security updates or Patch Tuesdays. Instead the company is shifting delivery of these updates to Microsoft Update, bringing EDR servicing in line with several other Microsoft Defender components. If you recall, Microsoft last year moved PowerShell updates to Microsoft Update (MU) as well since it provides automatic updates for Microsoft products and services. Thus the move is intended to allow Microsoft to deliver EDR improvements and security enhancements independently of the OS's regular monthly update cycle; this should enable faster deployment of protection updates without requiring organizations to wait for the next Patch release. For those unfamiliar, Microsoft Defender for Endpoint's EDR capabilities are designed to help organizations detect, investigate, and respond to advanced threats across managed devices. Keeping these components updated is critical for maintaining protection against evolving attack techniques. The rollout has already began for Windows 10 devices in late May 2026 (last month) and Microsoft says it will gradually expand support to Windows 11 and the remaining supported Windows versions over the coming months. The company expects deployment across Windows 10 and Windows 11 to be completed by fall 2026 or around Q3 of this year. Once the transition is complete, EDR updates will be delivered through Microsoft Update using KB5005292, provided the required prerequisite updates have already been installed. Microsoft is also introducing a new Defender Update Service as part of the change. Following installation of the first update, devices will automatically create a new directory located at %ProgramData%\Microsoft\Microsoft Defender\Defender Update. Microsoft notes that restarts may occasionally be necessary in case of "rare" failure scenarios. For most organizations, the tech giant says no action will be required as long as Microsoft Update is already permitted within their update management strategy. Admins who rely on manually deployed update packages, however, will need to adjust their processes to ensure the new Defender update package is included. Microsoft also recommends reviewing internal documentation and notifying helpdesk and security operations teams about the updated delivery mechanism to avoid confusion during the transition. As a prerequisite, the tech giant notes that systems must be running Sense version 10.8798.25857.1000 or later and have one of the following Windows updates (or later) installed: Win11 24H2 KB5062660 (2025-07 Cumulative Update Preview) Win11 23H2 KB5062663 (2025-07 Cumulative Update Preview) Win11 22H2 KB5062663 (2025-07 Cumulative Update Preview) Win10 22H2 KB5062649 (2025-07 Cumulative Update Preview) Win10 1809 KB5063877 (2025-08 Cumulative Update) Server 2019 KB5063877 (2025-08 Cumulative Update) Server 2022 KB5063880 (2025-08 Cumulative Update) Server 2025 KB5063878 (2025-08 Cumulative Update) As always, organizations should verify that their update policies align with the new servicing approach before the broader rollout reaches all supported Windows platforms later this year.
