What was your first home computer?

Recommended Posts

Mine was a custom built PC that had a AMD K-6 processor, and I believe it originally had a Intel i486 DX2 processor in it. I was a little back then (90s) and my mother actually built it. She was in very into and experienced in computers like building them, software etc.  I remember playing games on it like Putt Putt and Freddi Fish.

Here is a photo of my first home PC

Mine was a custom built with 486MHz..

then got new custom built pc with 866MHz, voodoo video card, 56k modem.

I used to build the PC in the past... it was fun.. and now I am old.. I am using laptops for now.

I have a server tower for backups.

It depends whether you mean the first home computer I used or the first computer that was entirely mine.. BIG difference.

First home computer I used was a Tandy 1000 EX with DOS 2 (upgraded to 640k RAM)

First computer that was entirely mine was a Walmart special, HP Pavilion w/ Celeron 768mhz

First used -- It was either an IBM System 3 or a VAX-11/780, I forget which was first, awful long time ago.

First owned -- TRS-80 Model 1, built it up over the next year or so with addons (boosted memory to 48K, expansion interface, 5MB hard drive, etc), later replaced with a Model 16 running Microsoft Xenix.

Texas Instruments TI-99/4A, I had everything with this, Game Controllers, speech synthesizer, every game and app cartridge, Peripheral Expansion Box,  32K ram card, RS2600px-TI99-IMG_1680.jpg3250px-TI99expansion.jpg2 Card, Disc control card, 2x 360k 5 1/4 Floppy drives, 512k Ram disc, gram cracker and pretty much every game and app ever released for it

First owned -- TRS-80 Model 1, built it up over the next year or so with addons (boosted memory to 48K, expansion interface, 5MB hard drive, etc), later replaced with a Model 16 running Microsoft Xenix.

I also had a TRS-80 but I believe mine was a Model 2. Came with 16k but I believe it was eventually upgraded to 64k. But never had the expansion or hard drive.

Our first was a Commodore 64 when I was like 5.   After that my parents got one from some guy (custom built) not sure brand, or specs, I was too young.  I do know it ran Windows 95.. and we got it christmas of 96.. but other than that I don't know.  I remember it came with Time Commando I played the **** out of that game (even though I was only 6)

My first one was a tower that literally had the brand "Poor Man's PC" on it, or maybe it was Poormans or something, and it ran DOS.  I was 5 or 6 and figured out how to make DOS menus so I could create shortcuts to games I had like King's Quest, Space Quest, and Mixed Up Mother Goose.  Also had the DOS version of Microsoft Works.  It had something like 8 MB of RAM and a black and white monitor.  Later upgraded it to 16 MB of RAM and Windows 3.1.  Then got a really old Dell computer that had Windows 95 on it, and actually had a color monitor.

386sx. bought from I believe Computer Shopper. 25mhz on turbo, and I think 15 or so normal. Something like that. Later upgraded to a Pentium 1.2ghz and a 1gb hard drive.

80mb hard drive double spaced

2400 baud modem, 9600 baud, and lastly....56k

Installed a CDROM and 8bit Soundblaster

Dont remember how much memory. Maybe 8 or 16 mb. Been a while. Windows 3.1, later installed 3.11. DOS 5 something and upgraded to 6.22.

1998, a late comer back then.

Had a Pentium 3 slot CPU running at around 500MHz.  has a whopping 128MB RAM which I upgraded to 512MB.

Originally started with Windows 98 (not SE), so it was hell, and we switched back to Windows 95 until SE came out.

    • Looks like the 7.1 is fake effects, can it at least do real 5.1? It says 'virtual 7.1' in all descriptions.
    • You can't, if you didn't notice, it doesn't support surround at all, it's right in the spec list.
    • Hi — I’m always interested in soundcards. Like displays, I just want to know I’m getting as much clean “sonic juice” into my brain as possible as the years take their toll. I’m not entirely sure what to take away from this review, though. It doesn’t really tell me whether the AE‑X is a good product or who it’s actually for. Most of what I’m getting is: there’s a driver to install, here’s what it looks like, and here’s what’s in the box. There’s a lot of emphasis on the SPDIF input. When you mention not needing to switch headphones between console and PC — does that mean the PC has to be powered on just to pass audio through? That seems like a fairly big waste of energy. Is this more something a streamer would use alongside a capture card? How are you testing the sound? (Also, you might want to clarify that you’re using the headphones in wired mode when you mention they’re wireless.) You mention the lack of EMI shielding — how much real‑world difference does that make compared with typical motherboard audio? On multi‑channel: what exactly isn’t supported? Does this mean Windows spatial audio (Dolby Atmos for Headphones, DTS Headphone:X, etc.) won’t work, or just that the card itself doesn’t decode surround formats? And are there any true multi‑driver “surround” headphones left that would even use that? You also highlight support for high‑impedance headphones — but what does that translate to in practice? How does it compare to driving the same headphones from a normal device, and does it make any difference for everyday, lower‑impedance models? In short, who is this card actually targeted at?
    • Yes, THIS is wordart, not the styling that can now be done. Wordart was all about those curvy words, that you could change the path of, like making words go around a circle. I don't think it can be done now, right?
    • Just saw a news report of a Waymo driving into a flooded road.
