Broken PS4 Systems Popping Up

Recommended Posts

Yeah that's what I figured, wonder why people are opting to ship direct to Sony then? :s (judging by some 1 star (verified) reviews on Amazon).

Well two possibilities:

1. Amazon is out of stock and therefore cannot cross ship a replacement

2. Those people simply don't know about Amazon's return policy.

According to one of the reviews on Amazon, they told the person they could only give them a refund, otherwise they'd have to call Sony...

Can find couple of videos here: http://videogamesandnews.com/ps4s-red-line-death-true/

And the official support forum is full of non-reported issues: http://community.us.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-4-Support/bd-p/22090

Yep! It's already 56 pages long and there are more threads.

Then they're likely out of RMA backup stock and that's a VERY bad sign.

It is incredible so many faulty units would slip through QC.

If I had pre-ordered/paid months ago and now I have to wait for weeks for a replacement I'd be furious right now.

Wow im glad i sold my preorder.  Dude messaged me and said it died after several hours of use but i told him that wasnt my problem lol he needed to call sony or gamestop.  Worries me a bit that amazon is saying the number of returns is in the thousands they processed already. On the other hand my best friend bought one and his is perfectly fine so far.i pretty much agree with the reviews on that other thread its pretty decent as long as it works.

I am almost debating whether i should get my XO preorder over this.  I am praying they did a little better job putting the hardware together than it seems sony did.

Hopefully the One is designed with the RRoD fresh in Microsoft's mind

Have any gaming journalists reported having problems with their review consoles?

this is why you always wait until V2.0, its usually cheaper, comes with an extra game or controller, and doesnt overheat/die. Im waiting for the inevitable PS4Slim

Yeah, early adopters beware.

I agree though someone has to get get V1.0 so they break it and let sony know what to change for V2.0 for the rest of the people that want to wait lol.

I got my BF4 bundle from amazon and I can say these reviews on amazon are really true - my console was not working out of the box. I only managed to unbox it - connect everything supper carrefully (reading manual) but once I pressed the power button the blue light kept pulsing and nothing showed on the TV.

I've already printed return label from amazon and sending it back on Monday for a refund. I just wonder if amazon got really bad batch of consoles or it's wide spread issue.

Three US people on my friends list that bought a PS4 had a DOA one too, but not from Amazon. One was from GameStop and the other two from Best Buy.

I wonder what will happen on the 29th in Europe if this problem really is that widespread.

Interesting thermal imagery here: 140*F (60*C) is still very hot and it is very single point oriented.

Is there any word from Sony on these failures? Unbelievable amount of failure reports cropping up now it is not isolated incidents like they would have you believe.

Kind of dreading receiving mine at the end of the month if I receive a dud I will be pi**ed.

all I have is a blinking blue light and a "no video signal" on the TV.... yep.... going great......

That sux, hopefully you can get a replacement quickly.

Off topic

just got back from target and played a demo of FIFA. I def love the feel of the ds4

Yeah, that does suck that some of you are having problems. I'd be pretty annoyed if I had a launch day console and it was DOA. Thankfully everything seems to be working on mine. Hopefully the issues will be sorted soon and it will just be an issue with them perfecting their process. I'm sure most everyone here knows how easy it is to mess up one small thing in the assembly process and end up with defective systems. Just look at the 360's RROD issues.

Interesting thermal imagery here: 140*F (60*C) is still very hot and it is very single point oriented.

Looked at these last night and they are quite interesting. Going on my PC knowledge, 60'C seems very hot for anywhere but the chip surface itself. Would like to see the PS3/360 analysed in the same way for comparison though. Out of curiosity, what do you mean by "it is very single point oriented"? That the heat is in one corner?

I wish we could get a clearer picture as to how many DOA PS4's there are out of the total sold. I suspect it is more than 0.4%, but how many more?

It means that the heat is very focussed around a single area (which of course is logical with an APU design). But 60*C is VERY hot inside an electronic device, especially one so small that has all the connectivity at the location of the heat dissipation.

The upright position of the PS4 is also not quite handy either as it allows heat from the APU at the bottom to rise and congest within the case a lot more as there are no slits for heat dissipation there. They should have put more there like on the Xbox One. That's why the Xbox One has a big grill directly above the APU HSF and doesn't advise putting it upright (even though it does appear to have grills on the sides unlike the PS4).

Yes, that's what he means, all the heat is in one area/point and not really spread out.   That's not too surprising as that area should be where the APU is located and where all the hot air collects and is pushed out the back.   Still, if it's collecting to a high degree then it could also indicate not enough air flow.   I think it's interesting that it's different when vertical and horizontal as well.  Seems like it's best to have it vertical going from those images.

    • I used a Pixel 10 Pro XL when it first came out for about 8 months. When I first got it, it was using Google assistant and that was fast, when asking it to call somone etc. Then it automatically switched with some update to Gemini. Doing even the simplist of things like asking it to call someone in my contacts was soooooo slow compared to Google assistant. I guess it had to go out to the cloud to do that? Back on iPhone and while Siri is dumb right now, it does do those simple things, like call someone, set a timer, star the stop watch etc, really fast. That an while I like Google Material Design 3 over iOS 26, they Pixel 10 Pro XL was so slow in comparison to the iPhone 17 Pro I am using.
