DADE CITY, FL ?  An outspoken critic of Pasco County government paid her $11,075.44 tax bill in dollar bills, plus 44 pennies.

The Tampa Tribune reports Julann Roe brought the stash of cash to the county office complex on Monday. Pasco County Tax Collector Mike Fasano says it took several employees more than an hour to count and verify it.

Roe's 41-acre estate in Dade City is valued at $711,447. It includes a 4,014-square-foot home with a covered pool, Jacuzzi and outdoor fireplace. There is also a detached garage and horse stables.

So why was she angry? Because she owned a huge estate and refused to pay her employees a raise mandated by the state? Did I read that right? What a terribly written article.

If I DID interpret the article correctly, what a bitch. 1%'er problems and all that.

It's legal tender, and she knows they have to accept it.  All she's accomplished is wasting everybody's time.  This is where I wished there was a lineup behind her and she got more than a few people upset at her.  If she pays that much in taxes, she can't be hurting.

Also, it's not like her taxes are gonna go down as a result of this.  What I wanna know is, is she gonna do that next year too?

No, I think she doesn't want to pay the county employees more. She doesn't want to pay for their pay increase (their first pay raise in 5 years).

Ironically, she ended up increasing the amount of money the county needs to pay in wages by wasting their time.

A shame most states have propertrty taxes.

Is like paying rent for land that you own.

Uhm... all 50 states have property taxes.  Certain counties in certain states rape the land owners and all high-population areas get hit the hardest.

You like having infrastructure, roads, police, fire, medical response? Then you get to pay taxes.

And BTW $750K for a house in Florida is considered a VERY wealthy piece of property. Even the high-end gated communities in Central Florida the houses only run $300k to $500k right now.

If this person wants to live in luxury then she is going to pay her fair share.

I will find the house in a minute so we can all look at it, thanks to Public Record/Sunshine laws.

Edit 1: It's on 41 acres. Here is the property data - http://appraiser.pascogov.com/search/parcel.aspx?parcel=2123260000039000000

It's called Government in the Sunshine or Sunshine Law. Unless records are statutorily exempt, like on-going investigations, sex crimes, social security numbers, etc. Then it is public record, most states have adopted this or have similar laws in place.

Is just the fenced in portion the 41 acres or is it the whole swath of land to the street that is the entire 41 acre?

Taxation is so 1770s :p

I agree property taxes are pointless. The US govt towns gets taxes on so many other things, that they could be fine with it!

Property taxes don't go to the US government, they go to the local county that provides your services to you, road, water, public safety, etc. It is basically their main stream of revenue to keep services functioning.

If someone posted a link to my personal home information, I'd be suing.

See here - http://goo.gl/0oo2GS

They also own this parcel adjacent to it - http://goo.gl/uJepjJ

and this one across the highway - http://goo.gl/lPrgcd

So they are paying taxes on all 3 properties, 1 of which has homestead exemption on, here - http://search.pascotaxes.com/Search/prclmain.aspx?parcel=2623210000039000000

I think we should scrap the taxes system altogether and do something like dues like in High School. If you don't pay your govt dues, you cant use the library or other things.

That's essentially what would be the alternative with health insurance if we did not change the health care laws. Someone would find a way to lobby to make it so hospitals don't have to treat you if you don't have insurance. Personally I find it to be a better alternative but many might disagree.

    • OpenClaw now has native mobile apps on iOS and Android by Karthik Mudaliar OpenClaw, the viral open-source personal AI agent, now has its own mobile app, available on both Android and iOS. Users can pair the app with an existing OpenClaw gateway and can start using new mobile-native features that are now available on the app. The app supports all the existing features you'd already have seen on OpenClaw's TUI, as well as some more, such as real-time and background Talk mode, action approvals, sharing from iOS, and optional access to device capabilities such as camera, screen, location, photos, contacts, calendar, and reminders. These features are available on both the Android and iOS versions of the app. What's important with these apps is that they don't run OpenClaw on your phone, but are actually just companion apps that require a running OpenClaw Gateway on an existing device, on macOS, Linux, or Windows via WSL2. To pair the app with your existing OpenClaw gateway, users need to run the command "/pair qr" on the TUI or existing chat interface, which brings up a QR code. Users can then scan this QR code to pair it up with the mobile app. There's also an option to manually pair the app by entering the host and a port. Previously, OpenClaw had been available on phones via WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, Discord, Microsoft Teams, Matrix, and others. Now, with a native mobile app, the interface is much cleaner and more focused on just the OpenClaw, of course, with the added support for camera, screen, location, and more. It's important to note that OpenClaw comes with its own security warnings. There's always a chance of prompt injection with these tools, so users are recommended to double-check authentication, tool policy, sandboxing, and execution approvals rather than prompts alone. For users well-versed with the AI harness, a native mobile app makes it easier to approve an automation, share a link, use voice, or let an agent react to phone-side context.
    • Google pitches Spanner as one database for all AI agents with these new featues by Karthik Mudaliar Google Cloud is introducing new features within Spanner, its distributed database, as a place where enterprises should keep their data, using which AI agents could make smarter and better decisions. In a detailed blog post, Google highlighted quite a few features coming to Spanner, including relational data, graph relationships, vector search, key-value access, full-text search, and operational analytics together in one database architecture. Google says that today's systems aren't well-made for AI agents. There could be data that is present in one system, search indexes in another, embeddings in a vector database, and relationship data in a graph database. This fragmentation isn't great for AI agents to do their jobs because they don't have access to all of this data in one place. This is where Google is positioning Spanner as a solution. Spanner is already a globally distributed relational database with strong consistency, and Google wants its customers to see it as a broader data layer for AI applications. The company introduced something called Spanner Graph, along with integrated vector search, full-text search, a Cassandra-compatible key-value endpoint, and a columnar engine for analytical queries on operational data. Google also added that its ScaNN-powered vector search can support indexes with more than 10 billion vectors, while the columnar engine can make some analytical scans up to 200 times faster. All of this isn't just exclusive to the Google Cloud Platform, and there's support for multi-cloud as well. This comes via Spanner Omni, which Google says is a downloadable, containerized version of Spanner that can run on Kubernetes and in environments outside Google Cloud, including Microsoft Azure and AWS, and even on-premises infrastructure as well as edge deployments. Google says that customers who are interested in the full-featured edition should contact the company, and there's no word on commercial availability or separate pricing. Those interested can read the full blog by Google Cloud, which details these features individually.
