February 2014 Avatars & Signatures-

We've brought back our Avatar & Signature Thread (we're going to see how the participation goes...)

Below are the forum guidelines for member signature images. Please note that in a lot of cases these guidelines also apply to text based signatures and avatars.

The maximum overall size for signatures is 170px (high) by 550px (wide). This includes text, images, and other signature elements.

File sizes should be no larger than 20 KB and 75 KB. This applies to avatars and signatures, respectively. For signatures, this applies to the combined file sizes of multiple images. Note, smaller file sizes are preferred so please be mindful of our members with slower Internet connections.

Below is an example of a signature with the maximum size dimensions:

Inappropriate content includes;

* Too large, or file size exceeds recommended size.
* Pornographic, violent or otherwise offensive images, language etc. This may include racist remarks, slander etc...
* If the avatar/signature is overly distracting, ie. bright flashing colors, animated sigs (i.e. GIF's/Flash)
* Audio. These are distracting for our members, so do not have audio in your signature.
* Your signature may not advertise a competing site or alternative to Neowin, or advertise a commercial venture. Neowin has its own advertising, this is the only acceptable (commercial) advertising on Neowin. This has been an issue lately. Staff are aware of it and will take action against any offending signatures we may see.
* And of course, do not contain links to, or use your signature to link to pages that contain objectionable material. This includes, warez, cracks, pornography, pyramid schemes, referral ID's, ebay listings and requesting donations.
* Please do not include signature links of a malicious nature. e.g. those that crash your browser, trigger popup floods or emulate BSOD's.

I've seen some odd/funny avatars around here. Some avatars I can immediately recognize, but some are completely a mystery to me.

Mine is simple: It is Wilson from the video game "Don't Starve". My avatar usually reflects the game I am currently playing.

but how to explain mine?

lol. It's OK. We'll give you a pass.

My main earned badges in the Army, my pride and joys, defined what I did while serving and still guides me to this day the things learned

Can you tell us what they were awarded for? Or are they for super-secret black ops?  :shiftyninja:

Mine is the little robot guy holding up an oversized gear (taking from Windows 8.1) It used to be the tail of the dragon (taken from 8.1 as well.)Before, it was a betta fish taken from the 8.1 preview. The earliest one I remember was the Windows 7 betta fish.

lol. It's OK. We'll give you a pass.

I don't play that game, they are my Airborne wings and Parachute Rigger wings, also earned the Air Assault wings and the a couple of foreign wings

I love the mark 1 Michael Keaton Batmobile, by far and away, the best one they ever did, barring the Tumbler, (But if one checks out the silhouette if the tumbler on the rooftop in Batman Begins, it resembles the familiarity of the silhouette the one in my avatar.

Mine was a 40th birthday gift from my DSSW (Dear, Sweet, and Sexy Wife). Since I'm a huge Star Trek fan, she had a friend of hers do a portrait of me in the Star Trek original movie series Captain's uniform, with Geordi's Next Generation VISOR in place of my glasses.

All I can say, to paraphrase Mike Myers from Wayne's World, is,

"God, I love that woman!" :)

Mine is a picture a friend took of me wearing a facemask during a light sandstorm in Iraq.

  Just kidding! Just Kidding!

    • UK funds £60M AI labs to challenge US tech dominance with open-source models by Paul Hill The UK government has awarded £60 million to Oxford University and University College London to help keep the country in the AI race by focusing on open-source, low-hardware alternatives. This is in stark contrast to the expensive, closed-source, and high-hardware-requirement models being created in the United States and elsewhere. The money will be shared among two new academic research labs over six years to help them redesign the fundamental mathematics and architectures of AI to help the UK reduce its reliance on a handful of US tech firms. Commenting on the development, AI Minister Kanishka Narayan said: Initially, the government planned to fund just one lab with a £40 million investment, but with this update, two labs will now get access to a larger pool of funds. The labs are expected to invest in the top AI researchers at every career stage, with £2 million per lab being set aside for hiring at least ten doctoral students. The government hopes that this will grow the UK’s talent in the field of AI. The labs are also expected to work closely with the leaders in British AI research, such as the Alan Turing Institute and UKRI’s AI research hubs. This will allow the various teams to collaborate and create new solutions faster than they could alone. This development is pretty interesting for a number of reasons, chiefly that it could create a long-term challenge for US tech firms if these labs successfully scale these open-source architectures that bypass the proprietary ecosystems. It could also give British businesses and public sector organizations access to AI features without paying high licensing fees to foreign providers or needing to invest in specialized server infrastructure.
    • If I were them, I'm gonna hold out until the prices of these semiconductor parts normalize. $1,049 for a ~5 year old hardware is DoA, more so for gamers. On a deeper note, if Steam Machine is priced like this, we are soo effed up for the next gen Xbox console and PS6. With great AAA titles releasing at the end of the year, this just creates more demand...and more tears for me. Lol.
    • I suspect one reason its hard to justify subsidising is that it's not a locked down device like a traditional console is. In this climate sadly if it was a "good deal" you'd get people hoarding them for anything but gaming. The Lenovo Legion Go 2 with the Ryzen Z2 Extreme is £1300 here ($1720) for some context on how other SteamOS like devices are now priced. I got the older Z1 Extreme model for £300 with a dock, just shows how insane prices have got recently.
