Gravity (2D) (2013)

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Like I thought in the beginning of the thread, there really was no point in arguing about your misconceptions about "Gravity".

Great marketing by his part. Awesome.

Rebirth? I would have expected anything except calling it a rebirth. Pure marketing BS IMO.

What you've done is purposely shallow a summary of the plot. But it's still a plot. Wikipedia has five paragraphs on the plot.

Did I leave something important of the plot out? Yes, using the fire extinguisher shows that when we are closest to death sometime like a fire extinguisher can bring us back to life; its the little parts of life that make us who we are....blah blah....I mean we can really twist the film into something else.

But plot complexity is not a requisite for a good film.

Correct BUT this film needed something else to be a good film.

The thematic & dramatic forms of film are just as, if not more far important.

Did you think she was going to die? It has to do with that dramatic portion of the film that you are talking about.

It honestly seems to me like you are just trying to force your point, perhaps because you actually can't quite figure out why you didn't like this film & others do.

Ive made my points clear why I didnt like the film. Why others liked it is their choice. Basing on what the director says, is not basing on how you personally feel about the film, its letting you get sucked in by marketing.

But you didn't like the film & that's absolutely fair, we all read & experience films differently, but it's irritating when people try to assert, in an objective manner, how a film is dumb, simplistic or otherwise unintelligent & bad.

That is strictly my opinion. Others might have enjoyed the film, and thats fine: Entertainment has many ways of showing itself.

Don't get me wrong though, I don't think Gravity is the best picture ever or anything, I found the dialogue got pretty cringey at times. Not something I'll be rushing out to buy on Blu-ray, but for the most part I thought it was good, even darn good at times.

Im judging it as a movie. As a video, yes, its fun, it has its typical up and down but as a movie with plot it has nothing.

I do find it shameful that the director says the "rebirth" metaphor and cant even protray it at all. So Sandra was scared (death) thruout the film......then when she was going to commit suicide, Clooney appears and she....rebirths? On the mud in the last scene? WOW, some people have vivid imaginations.

Hey, if you enjoyed the film, more power to you :) Im happy that you enjoyed it.

Compared to? Speed? Crash? Miss Congeniality? All About Steve?

I ask you just to compare what you think of her performances in some of here worst and best work. I thought she was terrible in Gravity.

Wow, you named 4 throw away movies with "doesn't matter who the actress is" roles to the role in Gravity!?

Not every movie needs an elaborate plot or backstory. To me Gravity was a highly distilled, contemplative and immersive experience about trying to survive against seemingly impossible odds. There's no greater metaphor or at least I don't see what that would add. Aside from minor physical inaccuracies and plotholes (which you have to concede in pretty much any movie), Gravity was actually highly realistic, from both scientific and emotional point of views. I watched it in IMAX 3D and have rarely been this emotionally engaged in a presentation; I couldn't help but clench most of my muscles and even try to avoid or reach for objects in the scene during some scenes - which I never did in any 3D movie before. By the end of the movie I was exhausted. :p

I named those 4 Sandra movies because they came to my mind (actually Im thinking of one right now of those I listed and Im not sure if she is in it hmm  ) and wanted to know your opinion on them. Some are crap, some are good, some are like you said "throw away". I just wanted a comparision :)

Fair comment.  To me, I feel that Sandra Bullock has never "mattered" before this film.  She may have been a Hollywood bankable "darling" but nothing ever set her apart, nothing ever allowed her to shine beyond "leggy, pretty brunette".  This film showed her ability to act.

As for plot... Reservoir Dogs has very little plot, it's almost a study in character acting that self references.  And yet an astounding film.

I agree; In all past movies (I can remember at least) she has never been given a chance to "take the spotlight" so to speak (and we are talking serious films, not stupid ones where she has taken the main role but could basically do what she wants). Maybe the typecasting was the problem with her and this film (she is not at all the problem with this film, I wouldnt place the blame on her, Clooney or any actor, just the roles they were given). I feel personally, in this film Clooney was the coach, he told her "come on its your shot at home plate" and she missed. Straight out or first base because of a fielder error. She did the best she could. OP said "Clooney tells stories and thats it and Sandra goes from always scared to this brave joking making first timer." Thats their characters, not the actors themselves. I dont think Robert Downey Jr. could have done a better or worst job than Clooney.

I also refuse to believe that "rebirth" marketing crap. Im actually insulted to read that.

Not an awesome movie but it was fun and interesting in it's own way. I actually liked it, although I found the ending to be too hollywood-ly happy.

I have to disagree though with the coments about missing elements (eg. stuff like descriptions of the secondary characters or tangential events). As someone mentioned before you also don't get to ever see what goes wrong in Reservoir Dogs, only the characters before and after the heist, and it doesn't matter because it's a movie about the characters and not so much about the actual events.

Gravity is basically a movie about survival in space. Does knowing exactly why Russia launched the missile add anything to that? Not really, it creates a sub-plot that diverges from the specific piece of the story you are being told.

Also we are to feel bound to the characters in their isolation in space. Maybe the NASA knows, but the characters up there don't so neither do we.

Do we need to know more about that third guy? We already know that he was a specialist working on the Hubble, and even that he had a wife and a daughter. What else is to be known about him that I would care about in the context of this movie?

The guy in mission control: we know the role he has, how would knowing who he is add anything to the movie? If anything, going out of the space to show the NASA on Earth would just take atmosphere out of the movie.

What I mean is that as good or bad as you might find Gravity to be, I don't think that adding that information would have enhanced the movie in any way (quite the opposite, IMO).

I don't see laziness in that. What works in this movie (obviously not for everyone) and sets it appart from other space movies is specifically the way it's told.

Got my Gravity BluRay today from Amazon.

Immediately started watching the special features.

Holy ###### the whole team behind this movie are pure geniuses.

How they wound up filming the movie is just mind boggling and so incredibly impressive I am just truly blown away.

Absolutely the best most advanced use I have ever seen of artists utilizing technology to achieve their initial vision.

Just so impressive. Makes the movie that much better and I already loved it.

It should sweep the Oscars now that I have seen these special features.

Unreal.

I watched this over the weekend and really enjoyed it. There were a couple of moments where I thought, "hang on, it wouldn't work like that would it?" but I'm no astrophysicist, and if you go with the theory that

she was dead from when she first got separated from the station arm

then you could also excuse it.

While I still think that I would have preferred seeing it in 3D, it still terrified and entertained me.

    • JetBrains is working to cut false positives in RustRover 2026.2 by David Uzondu Recently, JetBrains released the fifth EAP build of its dedicated IDE, RustRover 2026.2, bringing improvements like a Run gutter icon for criterion_main! macro benchmarking and a feature that alerts you when there are unused traits in your current scope. Now, the company is out with a blog post addressing one of the "most common" complaints from users: false positives. In RustRover, a false positive occurs when the editor incorrectly highlights something as an error even though the project compiles and runs successfully. This mismatch flags a gap between the IDE's internal intelligence and the actual compiler. When the editor flashes red warnings over perfectly valid code, developers lose trust in the tool, which stalls momentum. Traditionally, RustRover runs cargo check to detect compiler errors and warnings, but it also relies on its own code analysis engine to power real-time features. To provide quick feedback, this engine parses your source code into a syntax tree while inferring types and resolving names as you type. Because this engine must work on broken, half-written code and react instantly, its logic sometimes diverges from the compiler's, producing false positives that do not exist in the compiler's eyes. JetBrains said that it has a "dedicated task force" focused specifically on identifying and fixing false positives by analyzing user reports and examining large-scale open-source projects. To speed up this process, the team built an internal system modeled after Crater, the famous Rust project that compiles and runs tests for every single crate published on crates.io. This automated pipeline compares the diagnostics from RustRover's analysis with actual compiler output to catch discrepancies before they reach users, ensuring smoother workflows. RustRover, for those who're unaware, is a dedicated IDE designed specifically for Rust developers. It's been around for a couple of years now, providing features like built-in debugging via LLDB, seamless cargo integration, advanced macro expansion, and HTML support. JetBrains distributes the app under two licensing models: a paid commercial subscription and a free option for non-commercial use.
    • Last year I bought the 2TB variant for $114 on Amazon. That's crazy that the 1TB is now 67% more expensive for half the storage, even with the newer T9 already on the market. And that's considered a good deal.
    • You can disable all non needed features from Brave. There is also Brave Origin which removes them entirely and it is free for Linux.
    • I wish I could use Brave but the tab suspension feature is horrible. It doesn't suspend them like Edge does. Even after 2h open with 70+ tabs (same as Edge), it has 2GB more consumption than Edge for no reason.
