I liked Salvation, but it should have been its own film, a spin off of the Terminator series rather than a direct reference. It should have been based on a group of humans completely detached from John Conner, just trying to survive.

2 movies with silly time travel was enough. They are so dead for ideas that they have to make 4 out of 5 movies to be about time travel, ALWAYS with the same concept of going back in time to kill someone.

But that's the core mechanism of the whole story. That's the core mechanic of the Terminator films. There has to be time travel - and I gather that events of the first film have completely messed up every future timeline.

I'm not sure why everyone hates on T3 so much. There are some really interesting bits of lore in that film. The ending is a downer sure, but for any of the Terminator films to happen, Skynet has to come alive at some point. Terminator Salvation had some really cool sequences, but I agree it would have been a great standalone film, away from the John Connor lore.

They did jump, from 1984 to 2017

Spoilers in bound..

Which was stupid. If they knew this thing was happening why not go back even earlier and stop it before it's even remotely closed to finished? But I guess that wouldn't be dramatic and make for a good movie.

Imagine if they jumped back to 2015 when John said he got there to baby sit Genisys. That's how any logical person would do it if they knew for certain that certain events were going to happen, not go to the last possible minute that you could to stop it. I believe this is called deus ex machina?

Hell, they even used this as the kicker for the alternate timeline we see in this movie.

That's it, we need the time displacement equipment, so we can go back in time and stop James Cameron from ever making The Terminator :p

To be honest they're a guilty pleasure, and I enjoy em, I could take them apart just as quickly, just from the huge craters that were the plot holes in T2, but I really don't really want to overanalyze a piece of celluloid.

If you accept the multiverse theory, there's a universe where James Cameron is critiquing your version of Terminator 2. Whoa! :o

It's not about what makes sense it's about what makes for more action and pew pew and boom on the screen.

Can't it be both though? I just have a hard time lately trying to get around the entire "if this happened in reality no one would actually do that" part.

I guess this is one of my failings as I'm getting older.

Me thinks you missed day one of terminator movie camp. Time travel IS the main theme behind the movies.

Weird going to movies alone though ha. so i'll probably wait.

Pffft, I go to the movies alone about 98% of the time. It's great! Get to go when I want, much cheaper (especially if you go to a morning show, it's like $4), and its super easy to find a seat. Based on my rewards from my local theater, I have seen 268 movies there solo in the past 6yrs :woot:

On its own, it wasn't really awful. It had like a plot and stuff, and there was some effort put into it. The performances were okayish, and by the end of the movie, I did see both Clarke and Courtney as Sarah and Kyle (especially the Jai guy, he was the biggest turn-off for me, based on Die Hard 5). Arnold was very likeable.

But as a Terminator movie, it just feels so redundant. They basically wrote the plot around the fact that they needed a grandpa Terminator and as many possible T1/T2 references. And what was a pretty simple time travel paradox turned into a ridiculous plot device that suits whatever need they might have. One of which also being the fact that they want the next sequel to be set in 'present day' where they left off the characters, which is 2017, which is also presumably the release date for the sequel.

All in all, definitely not worth the ticket price.

Saw it yesterday too.  I agree that they should have 'touched up' the old footage rather than reshooting them - the punks were terrible.

Overall, I enjoyed it as popcorn summer fare.  It had good effects and boom boom, overall it seemed pretty monotonous.  I did love that we finally got a good future battle, unlike Salvation.  I still hate flash sideways stuff. ;)

I didn't stay for the after-credits but assumed there would be something glowing in the ashes.  I'd put it slightly above Salvation at the bottom of the pile.

The Terminator rights revert to James Cameron in 2019, and he likes this one,

The rest of his quote is severe spoilerage so I won't post it, but IMO Cameron is going to use Genisys as the jumping off point for a new series.

Also: Cameron did not like T3 or Salvation.

The original director getting his movie rights back isn't always a good thing.  Case in point.. Stargate & Emmerich's plans to completely retcon all three series...

Well if they did retouch, they couldn't have included "you're not going to need any clothes", which was the whole point of that scene.

I think he's just continuing from the original movie. The tv show guys retconed it.

Well, finally saw this last night, and surprisingly, I didn't hate it.  As a popcorn flick it was fairly good, as a Terminator movie, it... well, you can pretty much forget anything after T2 to be honest (and that's not a bad thing).

The one thing that annoyed me though, were some big unanswered questions.

Who sent Pops back, why did Pops blow up Connor's parents but not kill her, what are his real reasons?

If there are no sequels to Genisys, I hope they at least answer the above!

Finally got around to seeing this last night and after watching the end I could only thing of one thing that anyone in I.T. would know that makes the ending of the movie temporary and that is "D.R".

Any large corporation would have a "Disaster / Recovery" site so if the main location goes down you could get operations up and running again in a few days.  If anything; they just prolonged judgement day by a few days.

    • On the one hand, it shouldn't be difficult. You buy a computer, you decide what OS you want, which browser etc. Simple enough. But that's the techie side of things. My sister, my mother, wouldn't bother with such a thought. And I'm pretty sure that if you presented a window asking them what to pick they would say, "I don't care! I just want to access my Email!"

    • Anyone who expects MS to play fair is a complete idiot.
    • Everyone behaves like Internet Explorer just never happened and Edge is whole new thing all while Microsoft is pulling the exact same ###### it did back then. Sigh.
