Windows 2000 slow startup

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I recently installed Windows 2000 on a notebook, and I noticed that since than my computer is starting up slowly (compared to the previous OS, Win ME  - that's why I switched :) ).

I use it as standalone computer - thus not in some sort of network - and I noticed that it also now gives an icon of 'not connected to a network'.

Could this be the cause of my major slowdown, the searching for a -non-existing- network? And if so, what do I have to change in the startup-list or something familiar to stop this search?

Tia.

The icon saying 'not connected to a network' is my network-card not connected. I can disable that, but that's not the issue here I guess (since I cannot use it on normal basis).

However, I did notice a program running on startup, named 'mobsync.exe'. I did a google-search and one of the results listed this:

mobsync - mobsync.exe - Process Information

Process File: mobsync or mobsync.exe

Process Name: Microsoft Synchronization Manager

Description: Application associated with Internet Explorer and used to updates the network copy of materials that were edited offline, such as documents, calendars, and e-mail messages.

Company: Microsoft Corp.

System Process: No

Security Risk ( Virus/Trojan/Worm/Adware/Spyware ): No

Common Errors: N/A

And since I am not connected to a network, I figured out that this could be the issue here.

So, my question to you guys...... can I safely not-run this program (by means of msconfig or whatever's been built in Win2000)?

OK. I configured most of the options conform Blackviper's guide. But still Win2000 has a slow start up.

Everything is OK until the logon screen, but after I log on as [whatever] user it will take 4-5 min's to start up.

My laptop system specs are:

P3 750 Mhz

124 MB (4 MB shared for vid-mem)

10 GB HD (C: has a partition of 5 GB)

Win2000 + SP4 + all windows updates after SP4

I work and support W2K all day. I have yet to see a fast boot :D It is sooooo slow compaired to a BootVis'd XP install. Trade off is stability over boot times compaired to ME

I dont know why its taking 4 min though.. any hardware issues in the device manager?

fyi - there is no msconfig.exe built into win2k. need to hack the registry

start/run/regedit

navigate to HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run and delete the entry for mobsync

Is this 2k pro (desktop) or Server? Could be a service that's loading up at startup. If you could post a screenie of what's running in the Task Manager, that'd be great.

I haven't checked there yet, but as fas as I know weren't there any issues when running Windows Me (I will look at it, when possible).

The stability is FAR BETTER than Win Me, so that will justify the upgrade :)

I'll get back to you on (possible) hardware issues!

As promised the screenshot. I also marked -with a red arrow- the network icon (not connected to a network).

Can someone help me troubleshoot my problem with my startup time (still 3-4 mins; after virusscan [no virusses found] and adaware-scan [no adware found])??

As already mentioned, I use this Windows 2000 laptop as a STANDALONE version, so I really don't need 'network-things'?

TIA

mobsync.exe run entry cannot be deleted. if you delete it, it will come back :ninja:

why don't you disable windows autoupdate in the control panel?

disable some services too. when i had avg anti-virus on my computer when i only had 128mb, it took me ~1 minute to boot up, but the hard disk activity was on for another ~3 minutes

what's ccapp.exe or whatever?

Win 2000 is the os that takes the most time loading because of the way it loads i would say it doesnt load at a "snail pace" but it should take about 1 min or so to load... Depending on ur computer... Post your comp specs and about how long it takes to load.

He already posted the specs

He had a P3 750MHz and 128MB RAM I think

I have a

P3 @ 750Mhz

120MB RAM (8MB video mem)

10GB HD

Could it be that somehow the installation of Win 2k is screwed up? Might it be a good option to reformat the whole bunch and start all over?

If so, can someone give me some suggestions for the optimal performance of a standalone Win2k computer with multiple (three) user-accounts ?

Thanx!

do you have norton antivirus running? i remember on 2k3 in sp3 it took about 4 mins to shutdown due to a bug with norton and sp3 they did fix this in sp4 so if you arent using sp4 id recommend you upgrade to that, i also remember a tweak here in neowin on the sticky post in the tweak part of the forum

This tweak is for Win2OOO users those who want to use the faster boot up feature of Win-XP but don?t wanna use this slow slug as the os of choice?all you need to do is copy a system file from a Win-XP installation named "NTLDR" and paste it in your win 2OOO system...That?s the new boot loader which really optimized for faster boot ups?you can copy it ,say from your friends pc whose running win-XP...

This is a hidden, readonly, systemfile so you got to enable the show all files including protected operating system files from the folder option from Control Panel to view it?

the file is located on the root drive where the bootup files like boot.ini is stored?just search and grab it and overwrite your existing Win 2OOO 's "NTLDR"?its safe and effective?that?s all?enjoy the faster bootup in Win2OOO

Win2OOO Rocks!

just copy and paste ;-)

Caution: before implementing any tweak make sure you've backed up your system; you can use Roxio's GOBACK for a single click on the spot system recovery...

I can't find the ntldr-file on my WinXP-system :(, so the little trick won't work on my Win2000 computer.

I guess the system has too little RAM to let Win2000 run really OK, despite the min. syst. req. posted by Microsoft (which is 64MB RAM for Win2000 Professional), coz the rest of the hardware seems OK to run Win2k (it's also posted with a little sticker on my computer.... designed for Windows 2000 etc. .... (yeah right, dream on MS))

I think I just downgrade it to Win98SE I guess, that will run smoothly PLUS it's better than the preinstalled WinMe.

PS And yes, I have NIS2003 running on this Win 2k machines (it also has SP4, so the major bugs of NIS w/ SP3 must be history (right?!??!?!?!?))

I'm pretty sure it's impossible to not have the ntldr file on your winxp system. It won't boot without it. Just look in the root directory (C:\). It's a hidden system file so you have to change a few settings to view them. In explorer, goto [Tools]-->[Folder Options]-->[View] tab. Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and click the "Show hidden files and folders" radio button.

Sandboxie allows you to run your browser, or any other program, so that all changes that result from the usage are kept in a sandbox environment, which can then be deleted later. Sandboxie is a sandbox-based isolation software for 32- and 64-bit Windows NT-based operating systems. It is being developed by David Xanatos since it became open source, before that it was developed by Sophos (which acquired it from Invincea, which acquired it earlier from the original author Ronen Tzur). It creates a sandbox-like isolated operating environment in which applications can be run or installed without permanently modifying the local or mapped drive. An isolated virtual environment allows controlled testing of untrusted programs and web surfing. Sandboxie is available in two flavors Plus and Classic. Both have the same core components, this means they have the same level of security and compatibility. What's different is the user interface the Plus build has a modern Qt based UI which supports all new features that have been added since the project went open source. The Classic build has the old no longer developed MFC based UI, hence it lacks support for modern features, these features can however still be used when manually configured in the Sandboxie.ini. • Hello, Christian Maas' XVI32 is a nice (and very small) hex editor. Speaking of hex editors, many years ago a colleague and I who both worked at Tribal Voice managed to edit a copy of the company's PowWow instant messaging client to make it behave better now that all of its lookup servers and other server-side tech was gone.  The program didn't support NAT (RFC-3022 was introduced in January 2001, the same time Tribal Voice was shuttered), but it still worked okay if you manually set up port-forwarding on your router.  The server at http://powwow.jazy.net/ hosts a copy (usual warnings about downloading and running untrusted code from random internet servers apply). I occasionally use some tools like Funduc Software's Search and Replace and Application Mover when I need to make mass-edits to text-based files or move programs with a hard-coded installation directories, respectively.  When I need to figure out the exact LCD panel inside of a laptop, EnTech Taiwan's Monitor Asset Manager is my go-to tool for that purpose. JD Design's website (now hosted on github.io) has a number of interesting freeware and shareware utilities.  I used to use their TouchPro utility to set the file timestamps on software I was mastering to match its version number (e.g., version 3.00 of a program had all of its files dates set to 3:00AM, and so forth). Karenware has a number of interesting freeware utilities, too. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky
    • I still use HexChat! Not really as ancient as the 1994 AutoCAD above my post, but I have never found anything better to replace it. Yes we still operate an IRC server https://www.neowin.net/irc/ 😛
    • At work we still have a couple of people that use a version of AutoCAD LT purchased in 1994. This predates Windows 95 and works fine on versions of Windows up to XP. Its long since run in an locked down isolated XP VM, accessible via RDP. I did install LibreCAD for them, however they said it was just too different to get to grips with. In all fairness one of them is now 75 and the other is almost 60.
