I've just came back from watching it, it truly returns Star Wars universe back to a Space Opera. Roll on Episode VIII and Rouge One!

I thoroughly enjoyed it, as I said, but I meant to ask a question of those who have already seen it. It's a spoiler question, so DON'T read it (PLEASE!) unless you have seen the film.

Is Rey Luke's daughter? Please PM me if you are afraid of revealing your views here.

Highly likely.

Just got back from seeing in. It really felt just like Star Wars of the old and then some. The jokes were there, the action was there and yes a few surprises. I only wish it was a bit longer, guess we will just have to wait for episode 8

My only complaint is it was a little *too* much like the Star Wars of old, in that it was literally the same plot as A New Hope lol

Thats the thing though Star Wars has always been about history repeating it self . Even if it is similar it is still very different in many ways. The outcome of this story, with the father and maybe daughter relationship can be completely different than the Luke / Anakin relationship

To no surprise....The Force Awakens has smashed box office records.

-Biggest domestic debut with $238 million (Previous record: “Jurassic World” with $208.8 million)

-Second-biggest global debut with $517 million (Record holder: “Jurassic World” with $524.9 million)

**TFA does not open in China until Jan 9 which is the second largest movie market.

-Biggest Thursday preview gross with $57 million (Previous record holder: “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2” with $43.5 million)

-First film to post single-day gross over $100 million

-Fastest film to $100 million and $200 million (Previous record holder: “Jurassic World” on both counts)

-Biggest December debut (Previous record: “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” with $84.6 million)

-Highest per-theater average for a wide release with $57,568 (Previous record: “Jurassic World” with $48,855)

-Biggest opening weekend of all time in U.K., Russia, Australia, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Austria, Denmark, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, Croatia, Ukraine, Iceland, Serbia and New Zealand

-Biggest Imax debut with $48 million

-Most pre-sales with over $100 million (Previous record: “The Dark Knight Rises” with $25 million)

-Best Friday gross with $120.5 million (Previous record: “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2” with $91.1 million)

-Third best Saturday gross with $68.7 million (Record holders: “Jurassic World” with $69.6 and “Marvel’s The Avengers” with $69.5 million)

-Best opening for a “Star Wars” film (Previous record: “Revenge of the Sith” with $108.4 million)

I totally agree. As a standalone movie, I would put it in between Empire Strikes Back and A New Hope. However, with the backstory and all of the character development from the prior 6 movies, the story was far too derivative. I enjoyed it for entertainment value, but it seemed far more derivative than I had hoped for.

Spoiler

If you think about it, Rey is essentially Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Han Solo rolled into one. She was captured and had to be rescued like Princess Leia (although she actually managed to escape capture on her own). She also resisted a "mind probe" from Kylo Ren while captured, just as Princess Leia did when Darth Vader brought in the interrogator droid. She's a great pilot like Han Solo, and ends up taking ownership of the Millennium Falcon. And like Luke, she's going to be trained by a Jedi master who had a prior apprentice turn to the dark side.

Did anybody else think this was a continuity problem? See below.

Spoiler

After the Starkiller base was destroyed, and Rey exits the Millennium Falcon back at the Resistance base, she and Leia hug as though they knew each other. That was actually the first time they had met. Obviously, Leia knew Han had died through the Force, but were they reading each other's minds through the Force at that moment too?

I noticed this too

For me the real test will be episode 8. I am alright that they set this one up similar to a New Hope, its a similar story, but new in many ways. A lot of the old was hinted at in the trailers. However now that they have gone down this path, I am interested to see what route they take for EP 8. Will it be similar to Empire Strikes back or will they take a new approach? Star Wars in many ways is about history repeating itself, but I just wonder if Luke is going to play a big role next movie in helping prevent we he saw growing up.

I think so.  I figured both Kylo and Rey are grandkids of Anakin, so once they revealed who Ben was that's the only thing that makes sense to me.  Makes the hug with Leia make more sense too.

I just hope now that he's damaged, that Kylo isn't such an emo wuss in the next one.  Big question for me is, is Finn force sensitive?

I enjoyed it but beyond the Millenium Falcon porn, it does seem largely derivative and the pacing is off because they tried to squeeze in too much - the planning scene for the main attack came off as an afterthought at best.  And C-3PO is dangerously close to being the new Jar Jar.  Ep8 is going to have to bring it.

Where is the notion that 'history repeats itself' rooted in the SW canon?  Are you speaking to 'myth' archetypes? (Which I would say is the biggest thing missing from FA - Disney playing it safe.  There is a reason many cite 'The Force' on religious census polls.)

My only issue was that end felt very rushed. So we are 5 mins away from the end of the movie and they are like "Oh crap, the movie is almost over and we haven't found Luke yet" ... We better wake up R2D2 right now for no reason. Oh look he has a map but its missing a piece, but wait, we have the missing piece, oh look they fit! We found Luke. They fly to Luke and the end.

Moments are like that are where the Spielberg/Indy taint is strongest.  Yay, we have the pieces to the map that shows us where the treasure is, Luke - the holy grail.  I'm surprised she didn't have to spell out god's name  to reach the top.  Why even have a hole in R2's memory , since he woke up so late anyway?  I'll wager Luke still trusts his little force buddy instead of mailing it to whoever (the uncle?) got killed in the beginning.

I agree that the ending was a bit rushed...and felt rushed.  I think R2D2 woke up because Rey was now within the vicinity....and since she is most certainly his daughter and strong with The Force.

Rey is Ben Solos sister not Lukes daughter...

    • Windows 11 is a big thumbs down from me. I used for a period of a few days while it was in insider and windows 10 was the main OS, and realised it wasn't for me. I am still waiting for Windows to be tolerable again, a shame as at one point I was very pro Microsoft.
    • Classic outlook, not only does it have a much fuller feature set, it doesn't include Microsoft attempting to sync my emails from my servers to theirs. If classic outlook is ever removed from office, and the version I paid for in 2021 stops working for some reason, I'll use Thunderbird.

    • Here's how to watch the Xbox Games Showcase today and what to expect by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe The June games showcase week has been a packed one, with everything from major presentations like Sony and Summer Game Fest to indie-focused reveals coming in almost every day. Now, it's almost time for another big one, with Microsoft bringing its Xbox Games Showcase back later today. This is a double feature too, with a Gears of War E-Day deep dive also being attached to it. For anyone wanting to tune in online, the 2026 Xbox Games Showcase is kicking off at 10 AM PT | 1 PM ET | 6 PM BST | 7 PM CEST later today, June 7. The event will be available to watch on the official Xbox YouTube (4K 60FPS), Twitch, Facebook, Steam, Amazon Live, and other portals. Separate livestreams for American Sign Language and Audio Description will also be available. "This year marks 25 years of XBOX, and this Showcase is poised to be a true celebration, offering world premieres, new gameplay, fresh updates, and more for a swathe of projects we cannot wait to share," said Microsoft about this presentation. With a new CEO behind it that is pulling off some interesting moves, Xbox may have some surprises to reveal today. New looks at first-party games like Halo Campaign Evolved from Halo studios, Fable from Playground Games, InXile Entertainment's Clockwork Revolution, Mojang's Minecraft Dungeons II, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 from Infinity Ward are to be expected here. We may finally get to see the new Blade from Arcane Studios in action and a new Persona game from Atlus at the showcase too. Surprise announcements may also arrive from other Microsoft-owned studios like Bethesda, MachineGames, Ninja Theory, Obsidian, Rare, World's Edge, or Blizzard. Considering how every new release nowadays is staying away from November and December to avoid Grand Theft Auto VI's release, any launch dates Microsoft announces will probably skip those months as well. Once the Xbox Games Showcase ends, Microsoft will immediately kick off the Gears of War: E-Day Direct. This deep dive into the upcoming prequel from The Coalition should attach gameplay footage and perhaps a release window to the highly anticipated project.
