A popular radio station in Canada is under fire ? pun intended ? for reducing $5,000 in cash to a pile of ashes on Friday as part of a publicity stunt. The contest, ?Bank It or Burn It,? run by 90.3 AMP Radio in Calgary, asked listeners to weigh in through social media on whether the stacks of bills should go to a lucky listener or be set on fire. Morning cohosts Katie Summers and Ryan Lindsay say they were left with no choice but to follow through when 54 percent responded via text with the hashtag ?#burnit.?

The only reason I care is that money could have been donated to charity.

And be used for what? Lining someones pocket that already has plenty?  Most "charities" ensure they are cared for first.. then they look at helping others.

I wish I had 5k don't get me wrong.. but I can 100% guarantee that 5k wouldn't have fed a single person in Africa.

This, "charity" IS publicity.

Okay, so even if you go so far as to say charity is pointless, burning it has less point than even that so I don't see the comparison.

Pretty sure it is illegal to destroy currency in Canada.  It is in the US.  Send them to jail!  These are bank notes, they aren't actually yours, only the value that they represent are yours.

As for those who have called the station out for breaking the law, a spokesperson from the nation?s central bank, the Bank of Canada, tells Yahoo Shine that the DJs are in the clear. ?It is not illegal to write or make other markings on bank notes because neither the Bank of Canada Act nor the Criminal Code deals with mutilation or defacement of bank notes,? he says in an email. He adds, though, that the bank discourages such activities, as banknotes ?are a symbol of our country and a source of national pride.?

Its also not illegal in the US unless it is done with fraudulent intent.

I can 100% guarantee that 5k wouldn't have fed a single person in Africa.

I can 100% guarantee you're wrong.

Stop using the wrong Charities -- if it's on TV, it's very likely the wrong charity.

I hate hearing stories like this. Why not give it to a charity or something rather than burn it for christs sake.

To hell with charity give it to me.  :woot:  They should have at least kicked up the vig. Bring me my damn envelope. :shifty: Or at the very least send it to Neowin and get a superduper subscriber badge!  :woot:

I can 100% guarantee you're wrong.

The local evidence around states you're wrong actually, as can be seen here; http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/10507513/Comic-Relief-cash-invested-in-weapons-and-alcohol-firms-investigation-reveals.html

My first hand experience says that I'm right actually.

Although, could you imagine if every time someone does something wrong or evil everyone assumed everyone else did too? Why, that would be like a society of ill-informed, anxious and greedy people. I sure hope it never comes to that....

but I can 100% guarantee that 5k wouldn't have fed a single person in Africa.

this is something that "could" happen with some horribly led charities, but for the most part, if someone wanted to really do this, I know many people in areas around the world that do extremly good work with money that is directed to them. This is not something you can say 100% because not 100%  of everyone is corrupt.

    • I'm still rocking iOS 25.x on my primary phone cuz iOS 26 still has usability quirks (mostly aesthetic and thus its UX) which I don't wanna deal with -- and I've been piloting them with all of these updates on my backup phone, so I'm well aware of its "improvements" since iOS 26 was first released (compared to version 26.5.x).
