I'm between 'I might buy one.' and 'Yes.' because I don't know how the competition stacks up, but I definitely plan on buying one from soneone.

I suspect the pressure from their competition is why they 'sold out'...if their product doesn't come out soon enough it'll be facing competition they can't necessarily deal with.

I mean, I'm not some dumb college kid anymore who thinks he has the world figured out because he can stay up late enough to watch The Daily Show now, so I don't do knee-jerk anti-corporate crap like a lot of toddlers on the internet upvote. Rather than massage my own ego declaring I've already made a decision even though nobody has any idea whatsoever how this will actually affect Rift, I'll just wait and see when they release the product, like any sane adult would.

But hey, there's nothing wrong with coming to conclusions with nothing but seething hatred to back them up. Sure, you might not have two brain cells to rub together and don't deserve any respect as a fellow human, but there's nothing wrong.

Damn I just heard about this, that's a real shame. I had high hopes for the Oculus Rift. I was going to, I was really looking forward to it but now I will certainly not get one. I'll wait for the next non-FB version. I hear Sony are making one.

What I find funny is that people are abandoning something ground breaking just because Facebook owns them. For some reason I don't have the same hatred for Facebook as everyone else does. If it's an amazing product i'm going to buy it regardless of who owns it and i've been drooling over the Oculus rift ever since I saw it.

Spot on. Most of the people i've seen moaning about it still have Facebook accounts so they're f***ing idiots!

I'll still buy, it's a very, very interesting piece of tech. I used one of my developer mates ones (1st dev kit) and although the quality wasn't perfect, it was an amazing experience. The games, although obviously limited, were amazingly immersive, horror games did something no game or movie has done for years and actually scared me and watching films on the VR cinema was better than being at the actual cinema!

Unlike 3D, it's totally worth the fact you have to wear something on your face.

They've now just managed to secure $2b of extra capital (more or less), this isn;t a bad thing no matter where it comes from. I don't expect to see it particularly integrated with FB in any way and i'd imagine it'll operate as pretty much a stand alone any way.

Obviously i could be wrong but let's hope not.

I'm also interested as to what MS can come up with. Whether you're a fan of the Kinect or not, just imagine what would be do-able with a VR mask and the Kinect?!

My decision to buy an OR is not affected by facebook owning them in the slightest.

If the price is fair and I can afford it, AND there's a good selection of interesting games(most proper modern combat flight sims) I will buy one.

and don't fool yoruself, you say you won't buy one now, but when the thing comes around, it's awesome and there's lots of awesome games, you're guys are going to buy it.

The General public does not hate facebook as much as a bunch of you seem too.

The general public are the people that are ruining it. It consumes peoples lives and spews out the absolute worst in everybody that allows the site to consume them. Facebook have also made it impossible for anyone else to get away from it. All it takes is one or two idiots on your friends list and it will be completely full of shares, videos, fake prizes, like and share baiting.. Facebook has completely lost it's identity, it's no longer about finding out what your friends and family are up to. I would love to use the site to actually network with friends, but it's impossible because that is not the aim of the site anymore.

People are so addicted to it they believe everything on there is true.. last week there was a page called Bugatti (the car brand) with a picture of a white car wrapped in a red bow being shared.. All you had to do was share and like the page for your chance to win.. wait for it.. TWO ASTON MARTINS!

It had thousands of shares and likes from the desperate brain dead zombies hoping for a chance to scoop this non existent prize. Why the ###### would VW or a page about BUGATTI be giving away TWO ASTON MARTINS? with a value of roughly ?100,000 ... It takes 5 seconds of rational thinking to realise that it is just not realistic.

For that reason, i have very little interest in Facebook and anything this company decides to develop or acquire.

Everyone who just loses interest in Oculus without a SINGLE clue how the future of Oculus is going to look like with Facebook; is being really childish. I expected some more from Neowin members.

Oculus Rift porn app

Maybe it would be caled Facef#*k by Facebook.

I was always going to buy one and no amount of the hipsters in this post will convince me it is a bad move now Facebook is in the picture.

I'm not totally against the idea, if I could understand what Facebook hopes to do with Oculus. Somehow, I'm expecting them to come out and give people the insight of what they want to do. They really cannot afford to sit on this quietly.

I do find it funny how Facebook's own name could devalue the Oculus Rift though lol.

"I was never gong to buy one but if I was going to buy it I wouldn't care if facebook owned them or not"

I might have voted for the above line if it was worded like this:

I was never gong to buy one but if I was going to buy it I WOULD care if facebook owned them or not.

I have been very interested in OR since the Kickstarter however I am not the kind of person to back such things. I do believe that VR tech will play a very important role in the future not just of gaming but many other areas too.

That said I still feel we are quite a way off from VR being something that is "just there". I am not an early adopter of technology though so I would not be a version 1 buyer unless it really was incredible.

I have mixed feelings about Facebook buying OR. In many ways it seems kind of odd for Facebook to be looking at the VR tech however I think the better way to look at the purchase is nothing Facebook+OR but as Facebook as just being a technology company that now own a VR "arm" so to speak. It isn't really important to Facebook other than from an investment oppertunity. It is not going to be the most important thing in the world for their current business in social networking but it might be big business in another area. So I look at the purchase as just that. A purchase.

In the short term yeah it looks weird and I can understand why a lot of people feel that they will kill off OR but who knows. If they just let OR continue doing what they are doing then nothing should really change. Hopefully this will be how they want to do things. I think all of these knee jerk reactions are a bit disappointing. I am no Facebook fan but at the same time I don't really care enough about Facebook to get upset about such things. I just ignore them for the most part.

Meh. I had heard about Oculus Rift, but I understood that I would have to wait until it was out and I could try it before making a decision on whether to buy it or not. That opinion hasn't changed with this news.

Null vote.

Im probably going to need to make ties with facebook to use it now, so I guess the answer is no.

If they are completely independent products and I don't need to share on facebook that I have/use one, nor is facebook required to log into it/use it, I may consider. While the tech may be groundbreaking sony also announced something similar for the PS4 and I presume this is ony the start.

really depends.  If it is facebook branded, has a facebook UI.. has all sorts of "Firey just played 3d sex villa with on the rift!", or requires facebook.. I am not interested.  However if it is simply a peripheral (like it should be) then I may still buy it.

I've been playing with a 1st generation Oculus Rift and, while interesting, it's very clunky and hasn't increase my interest for a VR product.  I realize things will change as the product (or the VR space) matures but the first impression was "meh".

As for Facebook, they're not a charity.  They bought OR because they felt they can monetize it in some way that aligns with their goals.  Not sure why else Facebook would be interested in it besides some sort of data mining.

    • First exciting thing to come to Windows in a long time ! This is the kind of things they should focus on, instead of cramming as much AI as they can in everything.
    • New AMD graphics driver fixes install issues and FSR 4.1 crashes on RX 7000 GPUs by Taras Buria AMD is rolling out yet another graphics driver. Version 26.6.4 is now available for download, bringing two important fixes. One is for those still using Windows 10 and having trouble installing driver 26.6.2. In fact, this patch is coming from the recently released hotfix, so it is not new if you are already running version 26.6.3. The second fix is for RX 7000 owners. AMD recently brought FSR 4.1 support to the previous-gen graphics cards, but there was a bug with certain games crashing when using FSR 4.1. I experienced this issue with Forza Horizon 6, so today's driver should take care of that. Here is the official changelog: Intermittent install issue seen when installing AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.6.2 on Windows® 10 systems for Radeon™ RX 7000 series and above graphics products. Intermittent application crash may be observed in some games with AMD FSR Upscaling 4.1 enabled on Radeon™ RX 7000 series graphics products. Known issues include the following: Intermittent application crash or driver timeout may be observed while playing Battlefield™ 6 on AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370. AMD is actively working on a resolution with the developer to be released as soon as possible. Texture flickering or corruption may appear while playing Battlefield™ 6 with AMD Record and Stream on some AMD graphics products. AMD FSR Upscaling and AMD FSR Frame Generation may show as inactive in AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition while playing Battlefield™ 6 when enabled on Radeon™ RX 9000 series graphics products. Failure to install may be observed while installing AI Bundle components in some regions with limited access to HuggingFace and GitHub. Model flickering or rendering failure may be observed in Maxon Cinema 4D and Blender on Radeon™ RX 7000 series and above graphics products. Users experiencing this issue are recommended to install AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.3.1. Intermittent application crash may be observed on some models while running Blender on Radeon™ RX 7000 series and above graphics products. Users experiencing this issue are recommended to install AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.3.1. You can download the AMD Radeon driver 26.6.4 from the official website here. Full release notes are available on the same page.
    • Amazon may use OpenAI and Nova models after Anthropic reportedly raises costs by Karthik Mudaliar Amazon is reportedly considering to use OpenAI models and even its own Nova family of AI models after Anthropic raised the cost of using Claude inside Amazon services. According to a report from The Information, Amazon is weighing its options to reduce costs under a new arrangement with Anthropic. But back in April, Amazon said it would invest $5 billion more in Anthropic, with the possibility of adding up to another $20 billion if certain commercial milestones are met. That investment actually came on top of another $8 billion Amazon had already put into the Claude maker. Anthropic, meanwhile, committed to spend more than $100 billion over 10 years on AWS technologies, including Amazon’s Trainium chips. Amazon isn't just a customer of Anthropic but also one of the most important backers and cloud partners. This is why it makes it interesting that Amazon is considering other alternatives to handle its internal workloads. Although Amazon has been building its own options for a while now. Its Nova family of AI models was announced in late 2024 for Amazon Bedrock, with models aimed at text, image, and video tasks. Amazon pitched the model around cost and latency at that time. With that said, OpenAI has also become a more realistic option recently for AWS customers as well as for Amazon itself. Earlier this year, OpenAI brought its latest models and Codex coding agent to Amazon Bedrock, after changes to its previously more restrictive Microsoft cloud arrangement. This allowed AWS to serve even those customers who wanted other alternatives from Claude, without having to move workloads out of Amazon's cloud. Evaluating alternatives could also be due to commercial pressure and not necessarily a sign of a damaged partnership between Amazon and Anthropic. Whether or not Amazon is actually considering switching entirely to OpenAI's models or its own Nova models remains unknown at this moment.
    • Samsung introduces new AI classroom tools and interactive displays at ISTELive 2026 by Fiza Ali Samsung has announced several new education-focused software features and interactive displays for schools during ISTELive 2026, taking place in Orlando, Florida, from 28 June to 1 July. The focus of these updates is on making shared classroom displays easier to use for teachers while giving IT administrators more control over managing devices. One of the key additions is the Samsung Account Management Solution (AMS). In many schools, multiple teachers share the same interactive display throughout the day, which means signing in and setting everything up can become repetitive. With AMS, teachers can log in by scanning a QR code or tapping an NFC-enabled ID card. Once signed in, their personalised workspace, including wallpapers, bookmarks, app shortcuts, and files, can be instantly accessed through Home Personalisation. Samsung has also included a screen lock feature, allowing teachers to lock the display if they need to step away briefly. Furthermore, the company is also updating its Education Portal with new tools designed for school IT administrators. The portal will allow IT administrators to register teachers, enrol devices, and manage user access from a central dashboard. Administrators can also link NFC cards to teacher accounts, making sign-ins quicker across shared displays. Another addition is a Tags feature that lets schools organise displays by building or classroom. Those tags can also be used to send emergency notifications to selected Samsung Interactive Displays through compatible platforms such as InformaCast and Raptor. Moreover, the tech giant's AI Assistant is gaining several new features aimed at supporting everyday classroom tasks such as lesson planning and classroom engagement. One of the features is Circle to Search, which lets teachers circle text or images on the display to quickly find related information, videos, or web results without interrupting the lesson. The content can then be brought into Samsung Whiteboard. Another feature, Live Transcript, converts spoken lessons into real-time captions, which could be useful for students with hearing impairments or those in multilingual classrooms. The AI Assistant also introduces AI Summary and AI Quiz. The summary tool creates summaries of recorded lessons, while AI Quiz generates questions based on lesson content so teachers can quickly check how well students are following along. Teachers signed in through Samsung AMS can also return to their previous AI-generated lesson materials without logging in again. Alongside the software updates, Samsung has expanded its Android-based Interactive Display range with three new models: the WAF-S, WAFX-PS, and WAHX-M. The WAF-S and WAFX-PS ship with Android 16, bringing updates to security, accessibility, and overall usability while maintaining compatibility with Google's education services including Google Classroom and Google Drive through EDLA certification. Meanwhile, the new WAHX-M is the biggest addition to the lineup, introducing a 98-inch display for larger spaces such as lecture halls and conference rooms. It will also be available in 65-inch, 75-inch and 86-inch sizes. Samsung says the WAHX-M further includes on-device AI features such as voice commands, text-to-speech, and an AI calculator, alongside support for Samsung AMS and AI Assistant. Samsung AI Assistant has been available since April, while Samsung AMS and the updated Education Portal will begin rolling out in July.
    • It's been $24 (single) or $89 (4-pack) for many days on both Amazon and Walmart as far as I know. That isn't a big discount. If these end up like the 1st gen, the 4-pack will routinely get down around $80, give or take a dollar. I think they have even hit $69 at times.
