Supermarket giant Tesco looking into Oculus Rift to change consumer behavior

It's clear that big business is taking the VR idea very seriously.

So. just because Facebook owns them, and there will be a tiny embossed Facebook logo on the hardware and they might make their own virtual world social network thing for it, that would be completely optional to use you're not going to buy it. Even after all the cool games you where waiting for when the Rift was independent are released with OR support all the big AAA games are released with OR support. even after that perfect OR game is released....  even after that you're still gonna sit there saying "no, facebook owns them, I won't buy. I don't care if the hardware is awesome and it has lots of great game support. I won't buy it because FB owns them and they have this program i 'can' use on it" ?

Yes, I am not going to buy a product from Facebook, regardless of how good it is.

I had a thought for the backers claiming they have been cheated by this deal... it's all in the name.  Kickstarter.  You're giving the idea a leg up, your pledge (if it was enough) got you a dev kit.  You need to think about the purpose of this dev kit.  It is to aid in developing software for the platform!

If you backed, and received this perk under any other pretense it's your own fault.  The Facebook deal has not soured anybodies original Dev Kit.. it still works, and can still be used to aid in developing content for it, and therefore future versions.  If the next year there is no consumer version (which was the endgame) then you could perhaps feel cheated otherwise be happy that the goal posts have been moved closer, and the end game of the consumer version will be grander, cheaper, and here sooner.

Oculus Rift porn app

Maybe it would be caled Facef#*k by Facebook.

I was always going to buy one and no amount of the hipsters in this post will convince me it is a bad move now Facebook is in the picture.

i can only envision the polygon based porn, like what the japanese & certain german company did it ...

Goddamn people, it's a peripheral.  Being developed by a company entrenched in VR.  It's not a Facebook project, it's a Facebook acquisition.

They will make efforts for Facebook to SUPPORT using the rift (web plugins, etc) but they will not bake anything into the device.  It is in their best interests to Macgyver current products to suit the Rift, and leave the Rift open to as many uses as possible, to further the spread.

If you read the statements from both parties, this deal was done to fast track VR to the mainstream, and Facebook have seemingly made the first acquisition that secures their relevance past the death of Facebook.com.

Being acquired by Facebook isn't going to put VR on the fast-track, if anything it's delayed it significantly.

Facebook wants VR in the mainstream, but the reality is VR simply isn't going to go mainstream for many years, maybe even a decade.

People can point to Instagram and say "hey they haven't meddled there", which is great and all since you already have a successful product. As soon as Oculus starts hitting a wall in terms of non-niche adoption it's going to get carved up by shareholders.

Norwegian Army and a small tech company doing something awesome, showing how this is a really good buy for FB and that it has some really interesting outside games usage

yeah the text is in Norwegian so.. but there's a video at the top ;)

Basically they use the OR and 4 cameras to allow the driver to have a full 360 view even in dangerous situations where the tanks has to be fully closed. cool stuff.

    • Ridiculous claim that the labor cost difference of $6000 annually would increase cost per phone by $200. The employees produce 3 phones per month or what?

    • And I just bought a seat cushion for my mesh chair. The chair feels nice but the first time I sat in it with boxers, I realized I don't like the feel of mesh on my legs. 😂
