So this is a 'massive' update and all I see is HDCP, share factory, lightbar dimming, preloading and saving to USB? 5 months and that's all they've got by way of new features? What about features promised at launch like suspend mode and controller share over internet?

This is poor. Especially as they had previously said there would be something to get everyone excited in this update but so far this looks like a bust.

First post here, so hello there :-)

I would keep an eye on the Sony Blogs over the next day or two.. from all accounts this is one of the biggest updates Sony have ever done so I'd imagine there will be lots of other features included.

I hope so anyway.

Instead of packaging all these features in one big update Sony should really just make more smaller incremental updates.

Maybe, but then you can rest assured that people would have complained about that as well. Can't do right for wrong sometimes.

As long as the update is adding features and doesn't cause major issues, I'm happy enough. It's not like the machine was unusable before this latest patch, is it?

A few sites now claiming 1.7 to be the biggest Sonys ever done. If people know already I wish they'd post a changelog.

Although I don't think it would take much to beat Sonys update record, if I remember rightly their previous update strategy was little and often and they got slated for that too (although that may have been more because updates took so long to download on their awful previous PSN network).

I'll just be happy if they release the features they announced when they revealed it back in Feb last year.

Updates on PS3 were good, so I'm sure they'll be the same with the PS4. The Vita has also seen decent features added.

As for speed, I never once had an issue with downloads taking forever. I know loads did, but I honestly think it was more to do with ISP/location than anything else. Thankfully people don't seem to be having the same issues with the PS4, so could be either the PSN has indeed been upgraded or it's using different protocols (similar to that of XBL) that aren't causing ISP's to traffic shape.

I know Virgin Media in the UK had severely bad speeds on the PSN with PS3. That seems to have gone away on PS4.

My download speeds on PS3 were absolutely awful. The difference in speed between that and anything else I downloaded was night and day.  But then again the old PSN was designed specifically around the lowest cost as they gave it away free.  It has clearly paid dividends where they are pushing people to buy PS+ so they have invested in the network a lot more.  My PS4 download speeds are for the most part very quick.

WiFi on my PS3 was shockingly bad, as soon as I hardwired it up my speeds were just the same as anything else I used. I put it down to either a poor wireless card, or a slightly faulty one.

To be honest, I was only getting 8Mb internet at that time so it really didn't bother me so much. Now I'm getting 200Mb (roughly 20Mb a second!), so I want the top speed on everything. Thankfully my PS3/PS4 are up to that task  :woot:

I'd hate to be on anything slower now!

It was more than usable. Honestly i don't really have any feelings about any of the things in this update. I just want to hear "general performance and stability enhancements". Already got used to the lightbar so won't even bother dimming it. Got in the habit of charging the controller quite often so not an issue.

Did you not read the memo? You can't be saying positive stuff... it's against the law   :woot:

Only dimming? Why don't they let people turn it off?

Maybe they feel if it is still slightly glowing people will be forced to acknowledge it is still there.

It wouldn't surprise me if people were just getting punted to the wrong CDN locations, using DNS servers like OpenDNS or Google DNS can cause them (When I used Google DNS both XBL and Origin barely worked, switched to my ISPs DNS and speed increased ten fold)

Also using smaller chunked downloads helps, IIRC XBL splits downloads into 1MB chunks and distributes those (Which I think are also then requested in random order, similar to BitTorrent, so CDN replication can happen faster)

Anyone noticed a definitive changelog for this update yet? Isn't it supposed to be dropping tonight/tomorrow?

The patch notes will probably be posted here

So far Wikipedia lists:

  • HDCP can be turned off, allowing capture via HDMI.
  • HD Streaming option.
  • A rich video editor called "SHAREfactory" has been added to edit and personalize videos.
  • Save SHARE videos and screenshots to USB.
  • The DualShock 4 controller light can be dimmed.
  • Games pre-ordered on PlayStation Store can now be pre-downloaded allowing immediate access on release date.
  • (Japan only) Full functionality for PlayStation Vita TV remote play with PS4 systems added.

And it usually goes live sometime over night for UK, IIRC.

Yeah it is, but I haven't seen a definitive list.

I would assume there would an PS blog post detailing it all once it actually launches.

After that teasing of an honest to goodness music player for the ps4, I'm trying not to get my hopes up that it will be in this update, but I'm eager to see it.

Few more tidbits, some repeated, hopefully more to come

So, SCEP posted on their Facebook profile few more infos:

- Ability to pay with PayPal checkout
- Trophy sorting by their rarity
- DS4 light dimming

Happy with paypal, will be removing my card.

Possibly... I use my ISP DNS servers and always have and had no issues

Yeah, only reason I wasn't using the DNS server provided by my ISP was that it was god awful (Would randomly stop returning results for certain domains) while Google DNS didn't, but then I switched ISPs and their server is fine (And they also run their own XBL/Steam CDN for members only, so they redirect stuff to that, that certainly helps the speed).

But with the amount of misinformation and marketing out there about services like OpenDNS, it wouldn't surprise me if people were using them because they were "faster" or such (Or just didn't realise because somebody they know switched their DNS settings)

Won't be able to get to my console until much later this evening but from what i've read this update seems like a bust.

What about getting some of the features out of the door that they announced back in feb last year?  Seems like the first major update 5 months after launch and they've not really done a great deal. Still no friend notifications either?!

It is nice that they added pre-loading but it is almost useless until they get their store into shape and make digital version cheaper than their physical counterparts...

This topic is now closed to further replies.

    • I wonder how many are laid off for cost savings, and this being blamed on AI to make it sound less scary and bad, for a more positive "modern, with the times" spin for investors? Because Oracle is down 14% the past year. We're looking at a company struggling here. If AI would actually be working out so well for them that they can do massive layoffs, surely this would've been reflected the past year in their stock value?
