Mozilla Thunderbird 0.4 Final

Recommended Posts

Mozilla Thunderbird is a redesign of the Mozilla mail component. Our goal is to produce a cross platform stand alone mail application using the XUL user interface language. Our intended customer is someone who uses Mozilla Firebird (or another stand alone browser) as their primary browser and wants a mail client based on mozilla that "plays nice" with the browser. In addition, by focusing solely on stand alone mail, we believe we can make some dents in the overall footprint and performance of the mail client by removing components and chrome we don't need. On top of that, the UI becomes much cleaner as a stand alone application as opposed to being part of the mozilla suite.

Important: If you used a prior version of Thunderbird and installed themes or extensions, you need to

do the following or Thunderbird will not run properly:

1. Find your profile folder.

2. Navigate to the sub-folder called chrome.

3. Remove everything in chrome. This will not affect your mail data or preferences.

Just out of curiosity, and I'm not trying to start an Outlook vs. Thunderbird discussion or anything, but what do you think it's lacking? What does Outlook have over Thunderbird?

Well it's really hard to compare them (unless you mean Outlook Express) since Outlook has PIM functionality, which is indispensable to some.

I mean whatever JZolloXP and others are sticking with, I assume they are talking about Outlook 2003. Why are you guys sticking with Outlook? What does Thunderbird lack?

for some reason i like the old icons better. the new ones look too much like what i remember as outlook express. but then again i havn't used that in ages. And I'm waiting for the installer to come along so i can use it. Just too lazy to unzip tonight.

BTW, you know how firebird "learns" what is junkmail and what's not? well if i upgrade to 0.4, will i have to re-learn it? or is there a file i can transfer?

I think it uses Bayesian. All the information is stored in your profile directory so as long as you don't delete that you won't loose a thing.

Sweet. Downloaded & replaced my 0.3 install.

This is one open source application that I am really enjoying in Windows.. I tried Thunderbird and whilst I liked it, just couldn't replace IE with it.

This however does more than Outlook Express does.. so OE got the heave-ho and this has been my mail client for a good few months now :)

Cool I downloaded a nightly a couple of weeks ago and was impressed with the new icons, etc, gonna have to download this right now.

Thanks for the info.

EDIT: I'd still be using OE right now but I am so god damn sick of having to open both MSN and AIM when I wanna check my messages (OE will not work on my XP Desktop and 2K Laptop unless I have AIM and MSN open, really annoying).

But Thunderbird, while a little quirky in this early state, it really is shaping up to be an excelent mail program, I love its SPAM features. Cant wait till 1.0.

Eh, I won't download this until 1.0 comes out. I need to have one inbox for all accounts or this just isn't worth using. Its a great piece of software, but its still too infantile in its states. A few more features, less bloat, otherwise people won't go for a client that takes a while to startup and weighs in at 7mb when it should be less than 5mb.

It's pretty damn good for just an E-mail client (very un-bloated, it seems people just like to say that word for the hell of it), however some people like to have PIM stuff and therefore Outlook is really in another class of programs. Just like Mail versus Entourage on Apple computers.

    • I disagree here sorry. The majority of their customers are corporations who are locked in to their eco system and have no choice. Private individuals don't contribute that much to their income.

So kick back, relax, and hold on to your wallets. The Epic Games Store's mystery giveaways may have ended, but its regular freebies didn't miss a step this week. The double giveaway on the Epic Games Store will be available until June 11, and replacing it will be Citizen Sleeper and ROBOBEAT. The Humble Store brought a new charity bundle to check out this week too. • When will the Photos app be updated to remember the window size and position when reopened? They addressed this issue in a 2024 version of the app (though I can't recall the build number). Unfortunately, after that specific version, the problem persists! Please prioritise this fix in your K2 schedule. Additionally, the Snipping Tool has lost the ability to capture the Windows Taskbar starting from the 2024 version!
    • Same, never saw it on Android or iOS. Guess only some people got it *shrugs*
