No Mouse Pointer [Windows 8.1 U1]

Recommended Posts

Im having issues with the mouse pointer not showing on screen the issue started with Windows 8.1 U1 (Update 1). After I updated to U1 the mouse pointer would not appear randomly after resuming from sleep a restart would not fix it I updated the logitech software (I have a Logitech Performance MX) but this did not resolve the issue. I then tried a Microsoft Explorer Mini mouse which had the same issue so I don't think its the mouse.

I performed a clean install and the issue still persists. I'm using latest the drivers for all the hardware currently. A restart does not fix the issue either.

Are you still able to issue clicks with the missing pointer, or does it not respond at all? What happens if you remove the wireless dongle from the USB port and plug it back in, or if you swap in a wired keyboard after the pointer vanishes?

How are you acquiring the latest drivers?

When you say that a restart doesn't fix the issue, does that mean that restarting after the pointer disappears results in it still being missing after the restart (and presumably only a hard shutdown fixes it), or do you mean that restarting the computer resolves the pointer issue, but if the computer then goes to sleep, the pointer will disappear again?

Yes, I'm able to move the mouse around and click with the pointer. Disconnecting and reconnecting the USB dongle the pointer still does not appear. I've not tried a wired mouse as I don't have one at hand but will try that tomorrow as I have one lying around my brother's place.

Downloading the Setpoint application from the Logitech website.

Yes correct, after the pointer disappears either a soft or a hard restart the pointer still does not appear.

Though I would like to add that when I lock my computer the pointer appears on the lock screen.

Strange question maybe, but are you running any other mouse related software / drivers? I had issues with my mouse because I had my Wacom driver installed. Removed the Wacom driver and all is good. Had to wait for an update from Wacom.

Maybe try to remove all mouse related drivers from your computer? Logitech Setpoint isn't necessary per se. Just use the HID drivers and see if the problem persists?

Uninstalled Logitech related software, rebooted and just used the HID mouse driver and the issue's still present

Did you tried a clean boot? By going into the task manager - Startup tab and removing apps.

I had a client  with a similar issue, the pointer dissapeared after opening a Webex session. So it was an app/service running.

I've just tried that with no change in the situation

Do you have a touch screen? There could be a problem with some drivers or firmware

If Windows detects you have a touch screen and no mouse is detected it hides the cursor.

Any way to see if this the case? This is running on a Desktop (specs in my sig) and my monitor does not have any touch screen ability.

Use an older GPU driver. In Windows 8.1U1 I had issues with my keyboard, it was disconnecting and reconnecting several times a day with a (USB) sound notification.

Perhaps use a different USB port?

Disable old PS/2 support in BIOS if you have it, swap ports with keyboard.

Disable GPU and enter Windows with your CPU intregrated GPU.

Scan your system with different antivirus software.

    • The Google Home app gets video forwarding support and many more features by Aman Kumar Along with releasing the Android 16 update for supported Pixel devices, Google has also showcased a number of features coming to its Home app. First up is PiP, also known as picture-in-picture mode, which will be available for Nest Cams on any Google TV device you own. It’ll be similar to YouTube’s PiP, with which you must be familiar with. A small window will appear in a corner of the TV screen, allowing you to view your Nest Cams without interrupting your viewing experience. The feature is currently in public preview, and you can enroll to try it out before its public release. Another YouTube feature that Google is adding to its Home app is the ability to jump 10 seconds forward or backward in recorded videos. This feature ensures that you don't have to go through the entire footage to locate the moment you’re looking for. Google mentioned in its blog post that it is adding more controls to the Google Home web app. Currently, the web app offers limited functionality, such as setting automations and viewing cameras, but soon you’ll be able to manage more things through it, such as adjusting lighting, controlling temperature, and locking or unlocking the door. Google’s AI model, Gemini, is also getting more controls in the Home app. You can use natural language in the Gemini app to search for specific footage in the camera history. Furthermore, the fallback assistant experience that broadcast commands use is also being updated. You’ll now be able to use your voice to broadcast messages through the connected speakers in your home. The Google blog post also mentions that you are no longer required to use the standalone Nest app to receive smoke and other critical alerts. You can now view the Nest Protect smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) status directly in the Home app. You’ll also be able to run safety checkups and hush alarms through the Home app. In addition to all these features, Google is also making the automation creation process much quicker, will allow you to add more tiles to the Home app Favorites section, and will let you create different Favorites for any other device you use, such as your smartwatch. The Home app will now also support third-party Matter locks. Similar to the Nest x Yale lock, you’ll be able to control various settings of these third-party locks, like managing household access, creating guest profiles, and more.

    • I was a little disappointed with mine compared to the Lemokey P1, for example. Seemed cheap compared to all aluminum. But I liked the look to go with my Fractal North. Ended up getting a Keychron Q1 HE and a Lemokey L5 HE. Love the L5, which replaced my P1. The definitely aren't light boards.
