Can I monitor what might be causing lag spikes in games?

I can't play league of legends suddenly. The past 3 days I get seemingly random lag spikes and I can't figure out why. Is there something I can do to monitor the traffic and find out what is doing it?

 

Noticing now I'm getting lag spikes during Diablo 3 as well.

The first thing I would check is computers/devices on your network. If your router is advanced enough and records usage logs, go through them to see if someone or something on your network is saturating your US/DS e.g. someone running a torrent, a computer with a virus (part of a bornet) etc. If you're sure this isn't the case then the next step would be to haggle your ISP.

 

I use thinkbroadband's Broadband Quality Monitor. It pings my router 24/7/365 and builds a daily graph showing the health of my connection. Here's a graph of my connection on Jan 10th (random date)

 

 

I use this sometimes to corroborate any issues I have with my connection. If I see red (packet loss) or latency spikes on the graph and my routers log shows no corresponding local traffic at the time, I can then pinpoint with certainly the issue being ISP related at which point they usually get an earful from me :laugh: Read more here

At the risk of asking a silly question, have you tried hard resetting all of your network?

 

(thought this most likely will not help, but www.speedtest.net will allow you to view the speed and ping for your area, so as to compare what you're paying for / what you're getting <ballpark> )

Do some performance monitor logging. That will help you figure things out. Also use gpuz to help keep an eye on gpu temps and use speedfan to keep an eye on system temps. High temps can lead to lag and eventually bsods. A way to keep temps down is to clean the fuzz out of your computer once to 4 times a year.
