It looks like it's in a more usable shape than the first KDE 4 releases were. Remember those days?

KDE up until 4,2 was a mess.

KDE up until 4,2 was a mess.

I was in the the "you can pry KDE 3.x out of my cold dead hands" group for a good while.  Eventually 4.x got to the point where it's very usable, now it's the only *Nix desktop I like to use.. the others just work my nerves mainly.

Am I the only one that thinks that the K menu, task bar and other stuff looks utterly gorgeous, but the windows in the first and third screenshots, and task bar icons (fifth screenshot) look dreadful.

Yup.. incomplete work in progress maybe?  Like where it's heading though.

The default KF5 theme is likely to be like this: http://wstaw.org/m/2014/04/14/sample1.png :pinch:

I actually quite like that. My only issue is the placement of the close/minimize/maximize buttons. Having them in the corner without a border would look much nicer (a l? Gnome and Windows). Overall though, it looks quite usable.

It still looks like an armature attempt to me.  IMO the desktop wallpaper is the only thing that makes it look good.  Look at them by themselves and to be they look bland, and old.

I actually rather like that.. kinda sorta reminds me of the Modern desktop theme, but more refined.  But meh, it's not like there's a lack of ways you can change it up either, I've yet to find an OS or distro that I've kept the out-of-the-box visuals, changed it on every single one to something that matches what I personally like.

if anyone fancies the wallpaper:

what i think will happen:

- new iconset. the one used so far is the same as i have on my kubuntu 14.04. knowing that there are many icons, the community is probably already working on but it will still take some time to be implemented.

- the breeze theme. i dont think they have chosen a final version yet. i prefer the one with the round black buttons over the flat windows 8 like one, but we will see.

- the new plasma next is amazing. the calendar and startmenu designs look easily better than anything windows or macos has to offer.

- the rest might not suit everyones taste, but others dont like unity, others dont like gnome, i hear lots of people complaining over windows 8 where the iconset is basically still the one used in win 9x, same with macos. at the end, everyone can customize it the way he wants, linux got how many docks to chose from? 10 or more? same with themes and iconsets.

i never used the original kde 4, but googleing screenshots of it, i can easily see why it was a mess, some calling it fisherprice style

i only recently discovered kde, but where it is now i can only say thats an impressive desktop, especially considering its free. i am still discovering its possibilities.

the supposed mouse cursor theme for kde plasma next is called bridge, you can download it here:

http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/Bridge?content=164587

i am unsure about that one. i gave it a try, but generally prefer the white mouse cursor color.

The blue glow and the buttons are pretty ugly. The transparency is a bit nicer, but borrows a bit too much from iOS 7...

Aw I've always liked the blue glow, easier to spot than a shadow, even put that on my Windows desktops as I liked it that much.

i know this is not related to plasma next only, but kde plasma in general: i found just out that you can attach every window "as tab" to another window. long-time kde users probably know this, but i havent so far.

here is a screenshot and also a guide how to use keyboard shortcuts for it:

afaik this works for every program running under kde, so you can have a window with tabs of konsole, skype, icq, dolphin, etc.

long-time kde users probably know this, but i havent so far.

One of the reasons I strongly prefer KDE on my *Nix systems.. always finding new hidden tricks in it.  Where most other desktops are trying to minimalize everything to the point of absurdity (looking at you, Gnome), KDE isn't happy until it not only has every possible tweak/trick/feature you can think of, but has at least 15 different ways of activating it.

This is what a lot of people called Windows XP.

Looks like a bad attempt to rip off the "flat" theme from Windows 8, an odd decision given that theme is completely hideous. Gotta say I much prefer the look in the first screenshots.

    • Google reshuffles its AI coding team as it struggles to catch Anthropic by Karthik Mudaliar Google is already reorganizing the AI coding “strike team” it created roughly two months ago, as it attempts to find ways to close the gap with Anthropic in one of generative AI’s most commercially important areas. According to The Information, Google DeepMind is expanding the team’s focus to include “midtraining,” rather than concentrating only on coding tools and agents. Midtraining takes place after a model’s broad initial training but before the final stages that prepare it to follow instructions and perform specific tasks. In simple terms, it gives developers another opportunity to expose a model to carefully selected data before it is polished for release. That could help Google improve Gemini’s underlying coding abilities instead of relying only on better prompts, interfaces, or post-training. Previous research has found that midtraining can be particularly effective for code and mathematics, where models must move from general language knowledge to more structured tasks. Google reportedly created the original strike team in April. It was led by Google DeepMind research engineer Sebastian Borgeaud, who previously worked on model pretraining, and focused on complex, long-running programming jobs. Google co-founder Sergey Brin and Google DeepMind chief technology officer Koray Kavukcuoglu were also reportedly involved in the effort. DeepMind researchers were said to believe that Anthropic’s coding tools were outperforming Google’s Gemini models, prompting the company to give the project more attention. Anthropic has made coding a central part of its AI strategy through Claude Code and its Claude model family. The company has continued improving that area, with Claude Opus 4.8 offering upgrades for coding and other agentic tasks, along with the now-unavailable Mythos and Fable models. The reshuffle also comes at a time when Google faces increased competition for AI researchers. Gemini co-lead Noam Shazeer recently announced that he was leaving Google for OpenAI, while two other researchers who contributed to Gemini and DeepMind projects are reportedly preparing to join Anthropic. It remains unclear whether the reorganized team will produce a new public Gemini model or developer product. No release date, team size, or specific performance target has been disclosed.
