I knew they'd make a claim like this, they also claimed "The instant the graphical potential of a console generation has been reached, it should be ditched and a new gen started".

CRYENGINE Online Marketing Manager, who goes by the nick of Com_Raven on NeoGAF, decided to clarify the statement made by Sean Tracy.

//edit: For the lazy

I know that some people (some of which I think might have never played any of our games^^) love to go ?lol Crytek, they can only do graphics demos?- but the person quoted here is Sean Tracy, whose title is ? as indicated in the interview ? ?US Engine Business Development Manager?. So he actually works far more with our licensees like Turtle Rock or Cloud Imperium than on our own internal games : )

Also, as a tech company for whom the engine is an important part of the business, we are obviously also always looking at the future, and not just the here and now- remember that we are just coming off of an 8 year console cycle. I think it would be fair to say that in the next 8 years, you will see games that would benefit from having more than 8GB of RAM (and as many pointed out already, not all of that is accessible to game devs either way).

I understand that console wars are important business ; ) , but rather than just see it as ?Crytek criticises my console, their games suck?- take a moment to consider it from the view of a company that has to constantly ask itself ?what might engine technology look like in 5 years?. Not jsut for our games, but also for the games that the people we want to license our engine to might want to develop (see Star Citizen as a good example)

Does this mean they can focus on making quality games again now?

The Wii U has 2gb of ram and Mario Kart 8 is the prettiest game I have seen in quite a while.

My PC has 16gb and over half of it is never used in gaming. I agree the 8gb will hold back developers, but who cares, you want good graphics then play pc. The much bigger problem to be addressed regarding the new consoles is lack of quality games.

There is nothing to even tempt me to get a xbone or ps4 right now.

The only thing that's limiting Crytek is their ability to write a good story.

and to optimize their code. which is what other developers spend rather a large amount of time doing but for some reason Crytek has never gotten around to doing it for anything they release. which is a reason that most of their games do not run very well even on very high end systems.

More lazy developers complaining about resources..how surprising. Reminds me of the logistics department where i used to work. You gave them fifty trucks, and within six months half were "in maintenance" so they wanted fifty more.

i'm still amazed something like Last of Us runs on a device that theoretically has less memory than a two year old smartphone. This Sean dude really needs to shut his pie hole.

Weren`t they the ones flapping there lips about having 8gb of ram in consoles this gen in the 1st place?

Oh wait they did!

Thanks for posting this, always nice to be reminded how annoying and two faced some people can get. How much RAM does this guy need? Let me guess, Crysis 3 really needed 64GB but it's only because of pleb untermench with 16GB that they couldn't realize their true vision for it...

Before they even say anything i'd like to know why with all their amazing expertise they couldn't get Ryse to run in more than 900p. Oh let me guess, cause it was a hastily upgraded Project Kingdoms for the 360 that they couldn't be arsed to properly re-do.

If that was hastily upgraded, well then blimey, that's a damned impressive job that they did. Easily one of the two best looking launch titles (dare I say...the best?).

You joking me right?

Crytek engine is extremely well optimized.

Crysis 3 was gorgeous, well optimized, and had good story for an FPS

Love Ryse, it was a very handsome game but by their own admission it's Project Kingdoms upgraded for X1. The credits even refer to it as Project Kingdoms and say that it's been seven years etc. It could easily have been higher res though if they put some more effort into it. This wasn't really dissing Ryse as it was dissing Crytek's often elitist approach.

PS5 unveiled at E3, release in October for $449.

This Sean guy is proving to be Crytek's Adam Orth. Next he'll be telling us to deal with it when Crysis 4 requires 16GB of video RAM.

They must've got a bit sloppy with their optimization then. I can imagine that once the dev teams found out that they were going to have ~7GB RAM vs. 512, and a massively more powerful processor/GPU, they went a bit silly with effects and then realized that hitting 1080p needed a ..bit of optimization. :P

Why do people consider companies to consist of one persons opinion and thats the official opinion? Like the Cryek dude said, he doesn't hardly work with internal games and software more-so dealing with licensing to third-parties whom want to deliver with Crytek. If you walked round the offices and asked each individual developer/architect/artist you're going to get contrasting opinions from everyone around these things.

Of course RAM will be limiting in years to come, so will the GPUs and CPUs, technology grows. It happens.

He is not the only one critize both consoles.   If these consoles are to last 10 years they are really inadequate.

Let's have a look at some of the other games that don't run at 1080p on the XB1: Thief, Watch_Dogs, Titanfall, Battlefield 4, Call Of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Dead Rising 3, Metal Gear Solid V and Assassin's Creed 4. Are you saying all of those developers were sloppy too and went overboard on special effects? And why is it that the PC versions don't have performance issues too? Moving from 720p to 1080p requires a lot of extra horsepower, something which the XB1 obviously lacks (as does the PS4 to a lesser degree).

As for Crytek pushing for 8GB of RAM, they stated that should be the minimum and you've got to remember that both consoles assign a significant amount of that RAM to the system (around 3GB). Don't forget that Dell is shipping computers with 16GB of RAM and 2TB hard-drives, which compares to the 8GB RAM and 500GB storage of the XB1 and PS4 - they're already out of date, let alone seven years down the line.

I honestly don't see Sony and Microsoft sticking with fixed-spec consoles going into the future. Mobile phones and tablets are advancing at a rapid pace yet consoles are seriously outdated at launch and have to last seven years. It wouldn't surprise me to see them move to a business model similar to Steam Machines, so they can offer premium models (i.e. 4K models, larger storage, SSDs) and cheaper models (i.e. 720p, casual gaming). The money is being made on the software side anyway and both companies have moved away from the large subsidies that defined previous generations.

He identified himself as a Crytek team member, so he speaks for the company.

What's your point? PCs can be built with 64GB RAM and now 6TB hard drives. They also cost a lot more than both consoles combined. For less than $1000 you cannot build a PC that can really be called master race. But console haters never acknowledge this point. Also, i really doubt MS and Sony plan on this generation lasting as long as the previous one.

I am getting sick and tired of the hypocrisy. Samsung or some other bunch launches a $700 device with 3GB of RAM and an eight-core processor that barely performs like a 10-year old PC, but everyone goes oh look, amazing! Sony and MS release very powerful machines for less than $500 and everyone calls them dated cause they're less powered than a $2500 PC. The idiocy never ceases.

Thats not really true  for $1000 bucks you really can buy PC that will kick both consoles butt right now.  The  PC are going to get much better in 5 years big leap between the consoles (whose specs do not change and a PC).   Also contrary to popular belief the gaming PC market is growing not shrinking.    Steam sales are very high.

No, for $1000 you'll get a PC that can do 1080p/60 in all games in high settings. That's hardly kicking their butt. Kicking their butt would be at least 1440p/60 with ultra settings. That's the baseline for master race creds. Everything else you say about PCs is true and self evident, but consoles are not meant to compete with that. Console specs stay static? Wow, what a revelation, i thought my X1 could upgrade itself...seriously dude, we know what the differences between a PC and a console are. That's why many of us have both categories if we can afford to. There's no need to hate.

And no one is saying the PC gaming market is shrinking, how is that even relevant? You're just a console hater, sorry to say.
