compl3x
No, we are not kidding. Yes, someone thought that this would be a good idea, and someone designed and manufactures it. Gothamist brought us this terrible news. A cheese plate shaped like a map of the continental United States would be unusual and unwieldy, but kind of patriotic. Maybe it would work for a highbrow Independence Day celebration. It?s the three dots on the map signifying Arlington, VA, Shanksville, PA, and New York City that make the plate unappetizing. Gift shops are a big revenue center for museums; no one disputes that. Most of the items in the museum are at least on theme and not completely crass. Still, some victims? families find the entire commercial enterprise distasteful. Is it in poor taste to sell beautiful photos of the Twin Towers when they stood? What about stuffed search and rescue doggies? ?It?s hard to corporatize something that is essentially a cemetery,? one Manhattan resident who was a preteen at the time of the attack told the New York Post. This 9/11 Cheese Plate May Be The 9/11 Museum?s Most Tasteless Souvenir [Gothamist] http://consumerist.com/2014/05/22/sure-a-terrorist-attack-map-cheese-plate-sounds-like-a-fine-idea/

Ironman273
Along with the $24 admittance fee. Exactly! Does that make it any less tasteless? You didn't mention taste in your post. You mentioned capitalism as if they're making a profit from it. I guess they could make 9/11 themed dildos and buttplugs, too. But should they? I guess the discussion is where does it go into bad taste. I don't understand how the items they are selling make it so horrible and tasteless. If people found them tasteless and they didn't buy them then they would just be removed from the inventory. They're selling things and charging admission to keep a memorial open so people remember what happened and what was lost.
Tomoko
Forget cheese platters, the whole idea of a gift shop and charging admission to a memorial is pretty tasteless. Aren't most memorials funded by private organizations and tax money and open freely to the public? They claim they can't scrape up enough money to pay for the 9/11 memorial but they sure have plenty to throw away on other useless crap, and of course their war machine. theyarecomingforyou
You didn't mention taste in your post. You mentioned capitalism as if they're making a profit from it. It's being sold to make money, hence capitalism. The money might be for a good cause but that doesn't make it any less crass or cynical.
HawkMan
Just so you know all the proceeds from sales in the gift shop go to expenses incurred for the memorial to help keep it open. Someone made it and sold it to the gift shop. Probably not because they had a few hundred spare hours and leftover cheese making supplies.

Ironman273
Are we sure all profit goes to maintaining the memorial? I'm sure that wouldn't be right. "The 9/11 Memorial, a non-profit organization, does not receive federal, state or city funding, and 60 to 70 percent of its budget comes from tickets, online sales and the gift shop, says the memorial's communications manager, Anthony Guido." It doesn't mean that people who work for non profit, make no money, it means at the end of the fiscal year, they have a profit of $0.meaning any extra money they have, they spend it to achieve their goal. LightEco
Maybe if Congress could get over itself and provide funding to the museum and memorial, tickets and gift sales wouldn't be needed at all. You can't just run this for free, someone has to pay to keep the place open and if the government is too incompetent to handle it, the museum will have to do it itself. "Sen. Tom Coburn is blocking legislation that would provide $20 million a year in federal funding for the National September 11 Memorial & Museum at ground zero, demanding that co-sponsors of the bill come up with cuts to pay for the spending, his office confirmed to POLITICO." http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0212/72292.html#ixzz32lWg9Nv1 Of course what else would you expect from the guy who "initially opposed federal funding for first-responders injured by the toxic cleanup in the wake of the terrorist attacks." - http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012/02/01/fiscal-hawk-blocks-federal-aid-for-11-memorial-museum/
