Ignore doesn't block avatars

Recommended Posts

Why should people have to install software/addons to block something that ignore isn't blocking? You're just promoting people to install adblocking software and forget to whitelist Neowin. Maybe I should take your suggestion and do that.

Funny to hear that $5 sounds like such an expense for Neowin. I'm amused.

Btw, that hook is extremely lightweight. But I like how you make excuses instead of looking into and implementing something that simple, effective and efficient. Avatars removed via css, ouch, so much bogging down the servers.

Also, make it 2 complaints, but for what it's worth, I've added him to my ignore list and it hides his (useless / copy paste) posts as well as his avatar unless I show them...

I wonder how many others feel the same but are too afraid to speak up. Your post already proves that it's more than just myself who finds his avatar annoying. And you're right his posts are just useless copypasta spam.

I thought there were restrictions on using annoying animations anyway - not set in stone as that would be hard to enforce, but a level of discretion,

However, your comment about "Why should a user have to..." - simple, because a user wants to action something outside of the scope of what the forum delivers.  You cater to the masses, not the individual.

"I wonder how many others feel the same but are too afraid to speak up." - Get a grip mate, this is a web forum, not Iraq!

I did too, most forums have this rule to keep focus on content.

Still seeing an avatar shows that there's a bug/flaw/oversight in the forum software. Just because it doesn't deliver it doesn't mean the ability shouldn't be there. Thankfully there's a super affordable hook for that.

Politics on a tech forum. :x

I think a rotating avatar is fine, his avatar is not flashing black and white or things like that and never irritated me.

If you can't stand animated gifs you can also disable all of them in browser settings, google is your friend.

It's not as simple as it sounds and the resources in question are related to the server cpu cycles and database access. Adding a simple "script" isn't a big deal and no $5 isn't an issue, however when you account for the amount of traffic that the site generates and turning that addon active, it will increase the server load potentialy tremendously, thus slowing down the entire site for everyone else, just because a couple of users want to have avatars blocked.

If the avatar is overly distracting it may be in violation of the signature/avatar rules, if you would like to, please report the members profile and we (the moderators) can review it to see if it violates the rules.

The amount of resources it would use is trivial due to how lightweight hooks are in their very nature. If it was an addon or mod for IPBoard it'd be another story, but it's a hook. It removes avatars via css which in reality is a tiny amount of code and would be under 1kB. The amount of resources it would take to do this is so minor it's trivial as I said.

Did that, and was told it was fine. Yet even in this post another person has commented that it bothers them too.

Im just posting in the hope he blocks my avatar too.

Doesn't bother me in the least It's smooth and nowhere near as annoying or distracting as the one I've referenced.

Then go start your own site and add the hook on to it. There are reasons for not running it if you agree or not. But since you do not have all of the statistics and background information, I guess you know exactly how it will impact the site.

Send members away because of a complaint? Wow. Just wow.

Also thanks a bunch for assuming my level of tech based knowledge. You're such a good moderator.

Complaining about an avatar that the user has had for nearly 6 years, apparently you do not frequent the forums that often if it just now bothers you.  Upset because of an avatar, that with some self-control you could just ignore, wow...just wow!   ;)

If ignore blocked the avatar there would be no complaint. Had him on ignore for years and wondered why that avatar is even allowed.

Apparently you're safe. But just wait until he sees my avatar.

A hyperactive 90's style dancing banana. Oh that'll be banned real quick.

 Avatar is not anywhere near as annoying or pixelated. Doesn't cause a distraction either.
