I use the full words, unless I'm in a hurry or stopped at a light, in which case I attempt to use full words but instead type mostly gibberish and hope they understand it. My wife types 'r', 'u' and uses 8 for 'ate' or words with 'ate' in it and it slightly infuriates me a lot for some reason.

Basically, if I'm texted, "wat r u 2 doin l8r 2nite??" I probably can't remain friends with them, unless they are being sarcastic in which case I write back something similar with expletives, and if you're truly my friend, words relating to genitalia.

due to the absence of complexity in modern keyboards and devices, and the SMS limit meaning nothing anymore, typing full words require less effort than abbreviating and don't cost more. When I had to press 9 key four times for a Z. yes. absolutely.

THIS!   having to press 99966688 for 'you' vs just 88 for 'u' is what did it...

now with trace/swype typing and auto-correct, it's faster to trace out the whole words

I develop deep sense of hatred towards people who shorten words.

:D Kidding... but that just doesn't impress me.

Pro tip: Use proper full words and correct grammar when texting female species. Even if they are replying with shortened words, us using proper spellings is more gentlemanly.

txt speak is a massive no for me.  In fact it makes me think that the sender is lazy or stupid - in very rare cases it is forgiveable due to dexterity on a phone keypad.

I feel that one should always write in proper English. It is very irritating to see text such as "how r u doin'?"

This ^

Nothing worse than feeling like I'm talking with some totally illiterate nimrod!!

Even with the older phones where you had to press the same button 4 times for a "z" I still typed it all out.

So,

You're one of those idiots that sets through a green light because you're texting while at the light?

I hope I get behind you one of these days with my pickup with a plow on the front. I'll make sure you finish that text in a hurry! ;)

I almost wish they had a cop at every corner with a stop light just for this reason.
