Hi People,

Transferring files from USB to Computer or other way round is slow, it starts of high speed (MB/s) but decreases and takes ages to complete.

PC Specs are:

8.00 GB Ram

i5-4670 CPU @3.40 GHz

Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit

Any ideas to why this is happening and any resolutions?

Thanks!

What is slow to you - can we have an actual test?

I would grab nirsoft usbview and look at details of your disk and then simple robocopy, crystaldiskmark couldn't hurt either.. Just be careful on which one you download the exe comes with opencandy.. I would normally just not even suggest such software. But if you grab the portable zip its good.

Here is the most realistic test, just simple robocopy of large file.. What do you get?

What flash drive are you using, and what kind of files are you transferring - bunch of small files or large files? Are you using a USB 2 or 3 port?

Try a robocopy like Bud says. Here's what I consider speedy:

One of the fastest flash drives I have owned!

tsupersonic -

Until this new Corsair Voyager GTX came out - the Sandisk Extremes were among the fastest there are - I had a 32GB, which I gave to my father, then bought a 64GB - lightning fast!

I am going to get the 120GB Corsair for my b-day gift to myself - SSD on a stick

I have seen that drive, and it sounds good. I got my Extreme 64 GB for a decent price, so I'll stick with it for now. I don't use flash drives as much as I used to.

I'm glad that flash drives are finally getting performance boosts. It'd be nice to have higher capacities at somewhat affordable prices.

^ dammmm 150MBps write that is speedy I agree ;) What is the read on that?

120-130

Read speeds of 180 are not uncommon at all.  The only thing that bugs me about the 64GB Extreme is the fact Sandisk changed the firmware to make it windows 8 on a stick compatible & now the flash drive shows as a hard drive as opposed to removable disk - so the utiulities I use to make the USB bootable dont see any flash drive.

I am getting the Corsair  Voyager GTX 128GB in 2 weeks.

ON TOPIC:  The OP still hasnt even mentioned if it is USB2 or 3 and what type of media is he transferring to ?

both screens show the command use to do the test ;) So what do you not understand?

robocopy <source disk\path> <dest disk\path> filename.ext

your usb from your post is only 2, so max your going to see is if I recall about 35Mbps MAX!!! More likely much less than that, from here

http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/usb-thumb-drive-charts/Copy-Benchmark-Images-Read,Marque_fbrandx166,2302.html

Looks like read from usb2 kingston is less than 30 for sure, and more like less than 20.

I did a write test, but after reread of your OP you want read test so your robocopy would be more like

robocopy j: <dest\path> filename

I show from your shot that your usb is j drive. So like

robocopy j: c:\temp filename.ext

should copy the file from your usb disk to your c:\temp directory.

In my experience write speeds on USB 2.0 suck balls when you are doing lots of little files. They do best with one large file.

When the actual file transfer starts the speed is fine, after 10-15 seconds the speed decrease to less than ~1 MB/s then I pause the transfer once it's paused I make it resume and the speed increases.

That's normal, cache is caught up and it's actually writing the files to the disk (flushing)

    • The current Statcoungter desktop numbers has Google Chrome increasing it's market share this past year and currently commanding 75% share. Everybody else is just making up the numbers with even MS Edge losing 3% this past year and has dipped just below 10% share which is staggering considering it's default on every Windows deviced purchased. If these numbers are correct that terrible Edge number is both devastating and embarrassing for MS especially when you add in the terribly low Bing market share. This leads me to ask a couple of questions as the default browser holding just less than 10% market share seems really weird. It used to be that all Chromium browsers were being counted as Google Chrome in some cases.  Is this still happening? Do these high Google Chrome numbers contains some Edge user numbers?
    • Yeah, all web browsers seem to have some junk in them these days. The regular Brave browser has a lot of unnecessary stuff in it, similar to Microsoft Edge, so I don't see any benefits of using Brave over Microsoft Edge if you already have Microsoft Edge fully set up with adblockers and that. The cleanest or best free browser outside of 'Microsoft Edge' I’ve tried so far is 'Opera Air'. It still has some bloat, but nowhere near as much as Brave browser, for example. I have a system wide Adblocking program for Windows 11 that doesn't just blocks ads in the the web browser, but over the whole thing. I don't really need a web browser with an inbuilt adblocker because of that.
    • I have been using Firefox for years.
    • I'd trust open source stuff on github more then closed source binaries from Microsoft.
