thetman
found a good deal on a powerbook 12" at amazon. its the old rev A (867mhz) and only a combo drive. also has a free isght all for $1094. i have heard about heat issues and have taken that into my comparison with a 12" ibook i have been looking at. The only other thing that would be a problem would be buying panther seperatly ($20 upgrade) though it wouldnt be a problem much b/c i would be ordering the APP from apple anyway. so is the revA pb12 at this price a ok deal? (if so give me ways to convince my father who is hesitant, Im sure these may go quick and itll be hard to sway him unless I can assure him I have a buyer for the new win laptop he bought(xmas gift that i dont know about)) edit://ill add a link to the us amazon site powerbook 12" revA discount (gives code for isight @ amazon)
NeoMayhem
Good deal ;) The iBook G3s are also pretty cheap now, but the G4s are better :p
Dazzla Veteran Posted December 13, 2003 Veteran Share Posted December 13, 2003 Let me tell you now that it does get hot. You read the reviews about it being hot but nothing compares to when you've had it on for a few hours then put it on your lap. The battery compartment at the back gets scolding, literally. I couldn't touch mine.
AshUK
Yeah I had a rev1 12" PowerBook this summer for about a month but it got sooooo hot, especially when plugged in and using it in bed. I've been playing about with a 15" 1GHz Powerbook for a couple of weeks and that also gets hot while its plugged into the mains and using it on the bed (which in the manual says you shouldnt do) They need to make a BedBook, LOL!!! NeoMayhem
The PB is a little faster then the 800mhz iBook G4. The iBooks only get warm though, not hot :p
SFNE Freak
The Rev. B is supposedly nowhere near as hot as the Rev. A PB 12".

Chad
Good deal ;)The iBook G3s are also pretty cheap now, but the G4s are better :p The G4 will only be noticeably faster when using Altivec enabled applications. The G4 is just a G3 with altivec instructions. It's nothing that great. If you are just using it for email, internet, im, and other normal apps, get the iBook G3 over the Powerbook. It's a no brainer. But if you plan on doing some gaming and some multimedia stuff (photoshop, illustrater, FCP, etc), get the Powerbook.
FlyerXL
I will second the comment about the iBook G4 running warm, defninitely not hot. Infact it runs cooler than my old iBook 500mhz G3.
SFNE Freak
Does anybody know if the Powerbook 12" 1Ghz will run iMovie notably faster than a iBook G4 12"?
