HP Stream 7 Sleep mode kills WiFi

Recommended Posts

Ok, This is going to sound Strange but here it goes.

Got a new HP stream 7 with windows 8.1, connected it to my wifi (802.11 g/n). When the tablet is awake and running it works great, wireless works great, etc. When it goes to sleep however, my wifi in the house for all the other devices (Phones, other computers, wireless bridge - that were working fine when tablet was awake) all loose the wireless connection, and ability to go to the internet, and so does the tablet. When the tablet is reconnected to the wireless  everything seems to work again. About the only thing i can think of is its 802.11 Power Save, but theres no way to turn that off. Furthermore, if i disable Wake on pattern match on the NIC, i loose the ability to go into sleep mode. The only hypothisis i have, is the Stream 7 is sending an 802.11 power save sleep packet (constently?) which the router dosent know what to do with and freezes the whole thing. Turning off the Wi-Fi or disconnecting the network makes the problem immedatly go away.

I have updated the BIOS on the tablet, updated the firmware on my router, Router is a Linksys E900 running DDWRT (which has no problems with any other devices), Any idea WTH is going on here? I have never seen a device do this before.

I have been experiencing the same problem since getting the HP Stream 7 (Microsoft store edition).  Yesterday the

HP Stream 7 did all the updates but the problem still exists.  I don't see anything on the modem side that is causing the problem.  Wired connections continue to work fine but ALL wifi devices get dumped and cannot reconnect.  I reboot the modem and then, most of the time, the devices come back.

I am running an Actiontec Q1000 with all updates.  All devices worked fine until the HP Stream 7 arrived.  I talked to CenturyLink to see if there was an error log anywhere on the Q1000 that could assist in problem solving.  Nope.  Internet searches have not yet provided any direction.  I have not yet contacted HP.

Anybody else experiencing the problem and any recommendations on how to proceed?

"...Router is a Linksys E900..."

No wireless client device should be able to bring down the AP radios.   When you encounter problems like this, the router is not able to filter out bad information and is failing.  You will find crappy routers also are subject to WiFi connectivity loss with bad Microwaves and other stray strong signals in the receive range.

So even if there is something horribly wrong with the HP Stream 7 drivers, it should not be possible to dump an entire WiFi network.

Curious, what other routers are people seeing this problem with?

Totally agree that no client device should be able to disable the wifi connections, but it looks like that is what is happening.  My router is the Actiontec Q1000.  I too would like to see what other routers have experienced the problem.  With the number of HP Stream 7's that have been sold I expected to see more people experiencing the problem.

I suspect the problem is minimal, cause the reviews of the hp 7 stream from across the internet speak for themselves.

I seem to be experiencing a similar problem with the E Fun Nextbook 8 Windows 8.1 tablet. I believe it uses a similar, if not identical chipset to the Stream 7. My router is a Linksys E800. Temporarily, I've connected the Nextbook tablet to another access point that has no other devices connected.

20 or 40Mhz mode?

You may also have to turn this on:

Also when I have "antenna diversity" ticked on I have a lot less "retries" as well:

I have the same problem with my new HP Stream 7 killing my wireless network when it goes to sleep.  For now I have changed my "Put the computer to sleep:" option to "Never" in the Desktop>Control Panel>Hardware and Sound>Power Options>Edit Plan Settings until I find a better solution.

Yep all my networks are MLP names...Pinkiepie/PinkiePiePie is the main network,Derpy/DerpyErpy is the guest networks with 2mbps speed limits for internet and a strict ACL.  Rainbowdash is 802.11ac networks, Scootaloo is the repair client network that only has access to windows update, antivirus, google, and known software hosting sites. this is only for client PCs that I gotta work on.

The semi repeated name PinkiepiePie is an access point network

The fully repeated ones are PinkiepiePinkiepie for a repeater network.

all 3 network tiers have their own seperate VLANs as well.

    • I gave up on browser ad-blocking extensions a few years ago, replaced them with Adguard. Not perfect but overhaul is a nice app that does the job on both Windows and Android with the respective versions.

When they kill that we get to watch Firefox and Brave get a boost in user market share.
    • Block by DNS ad blocker! I dare you! I will even layer unlock Origin, on top of my internal DNS, if I need to and I don’t even block ads today (I really should but this type of behavior makes me angry). I suppose I could also just be lazy, and add the flags myself, back to each release (it wouldn’t be that difficult).
    • Wonder what MPs have ties to these privacy/verification/data harvesting companies that are going to step in this time. Last time under the Tories half the cabinet had fingers in the pies, heck even the PM and his wife at the time was working for silicon valley, probably made a fortune.
