Mom calls Santa Claus, gets hit with $145 fine

Recommended Posts

No, she didn't get a fine for talking to santa claus  , She got a fine for messing on her phone while driving. Against the law. And arguably even more dangerous since she has to use more of her brain to be creative, and pretend instead of using it to focus on driving.

She should've been ignoring her spoiled kids and paid attention to the road.

Try to control your kids without making fairy threats.

This "we're all victims" crap is getting old fast.

you did.

Not just once, but twice. First failing to get the inspection and secondly talking on the phone while driving.

She was keenly aware of this since she immediately threw the phone to the floor when she saw the cop.

I love how people seem to have cognitive dissonance when it comes to owning up to their law breaking and dangerous behavior.

santa does not exist neither does easter bunny, tooth fairy, g... ,. etc.

Hush you, makes for awesome leverage with your kids till they figure it out on their own.

On topic -- duh. Easily deserved that fine. Personally lost a few people over the years to driver stupidity.

when will parents quit lying to kids

I used to live in a third-wor...... developing country (now I live in another TW country :/).

For some moronic reasons, like lack of budget (not exactly true), etc. some of the "highways" pass through parts of small villages, meaning you have to slow down to ridiculous speeds, 20-30 Km/h.

Once I was travelling form one city to another and along the road there were at least 15 of such villages; it was really exhausting, constantly adjusting my speed from 110 to 30, being extra careful not to run over anyone, since people crossed the road to get from one side of the village to another, and so on.

Eventually I got tired and angry and passed one of the said villages at a higher speed, 60-70. A policeman stopped me. He asked "Do you know that you were supposed to go slow here?". I said "Yes, I were indeed. It is completely stupid for a supposed "highway" to be built like this, but the law is the law. I broke it and I'll pay for it. I know what I did."

He issued a ticket, obviously, but at the third of what it was supposed to be. :D

TL;DR

If you want to break the law, then be prepared to pay for it if you got caught. Arguing and false justification will only make it worse.

Is talking on your phone illegal every where? Sure can't be, at least in Michigan, as I can stand here in my picture window and count people on their phone that drive by. I'm in a raised ranch house so window is well above ground level. Can usually see the one's with phones in lap and tell if they're texting too!

If cops were actually busting people for talking, let alone the one's that are obviosuly texting, there shouldn't be hardly any traffic at all here!

Oh yeah, then where do all my christmas presents from him come from then, huh? And how do you explain this:

Back to the story, she obviously knew that she shouldn't be on the phone while driving since she threw the phone down when she saw the officer. In that case, why didn't she pull over the car to make the call? If anything, pulling over the car may have silenced the children.

It's quickly becoming illegal everywhere (in the US at least), like it should be.

yes, she should have pulled over, its her own stupid fault for breaking the law, what if she had caused an accident. the cost of her mistake is justified.  i have no time for people who use cellphones while driving / people who speed / think its cool to drift across the public roads/ etc... your driving a motor vehicle and that's all you should be doing with your attention on what's going on around you! you only have your self to blame if you are caught.

Michigan allows driving while talking on a phone, but some cities like Detroit have local bans. This patchwork of laws can get you in trouble fast.

OTOH, driving while texting is illegal as it is in most states. Fines run from $20 in California to $10,000 in Alaska.

Let kids have some magic, it's where imagination comes from.

While not all places have specific laws against driving while using a cell phone. the law itself it's redundant. EVERYWHERE allover the world has laws against distracted driving, this covers driving while using or fiddling with the cell phone or any other hand held device. Cell phone laws are silly unnecessary paperwork that's already covered.

We have sections like that here in some parts of PA and NJ... Except the speed limit is 55Mph going right next to people's homes and driveways.

That always feels far too fast for me being right next to where someone is walking along the road or a kid could run out.

..or God. You forgot about God. Another old man with a white beard who will give you what you wish for as long as you're on his "Nice List".

I know at least in Oregon, they passed a law making phones illegal to use while driving unless you have a hands free device such as a bluetooth headset or in car system.  If they see you with a phone in our hand, you as likely to get a ticket as the person who is breaking another traffic law.  They will excuse you though if you are pulled over on the shoulder of the road or parked in a parking lot (Basically not driving it and at a stop sign or light).  In spite of this, there are still plenty of folks with the phone glued to their ear and hand on the road here.  I guess the threat of the maximum fine of $500 is not enough of a deal to them.

Anyway, using the power of Santa can really be a great tool for any parent of a young child.  We found though that it just does not work too well from January through until the stores put the decorations out in September.

That's what Siri and Google Now are for. My LG's voice recognition works like a charm.

Or Cortana, or course. Or TellMe, really. I never had any trouble using the voice dialing on WP7 even before Cortana.

Do these places that allow talking on a phone while driving require it to be handsfree? Dialing a number or pushing and buttons is exactly the same as texting.

Some places. It's a patchwork. You definitely shouldn't be searching through your contacts list.

In California, you have to be hands-free and you can't text at all. If you're under 18 or you drive a bus, you can't use a cell phone under any circumstances. Even so, there's plenty of people do it and I see a lot of young folks driving while holding a cell phone. Anecdotally, I'd say that enforcement is fairly minimal, probably about the same rate at which they enforce seatbelt laws.

    • I like Tidal, but it still does not control devices from the mobile/app and still no surround support. And yeah re: above comment I still get a lot of network errors and I am on a 4/4 Gbit Fiber connection.

    • Samsung, Amazon extend 990 PRO 2TB NVMe SSD deal beyond Prime Day 2026 by Sayan Sen Recently, we had Amazon's Prime Day 2026 sales wherein there were several great deals including on SSDs. One of those discounted components was the Samsung 990 PRO SSD as the 2TB variant of it was selling for $370, a very good price after a long time. Although that deal was supposed to expire today, Amazon has now extended that sale further (purchase link under the specs table down below). The 990 PRO is a PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD and still one of the fastest drives available today for under $400. Speaking of fast, sequential reads and writes are rated at 7450 MB/s and 6900 MB/s, respectively. The random throughputs for reads and writes are 1400K IOPS and 1550K IOPS, respectively. The 990 PRO is based on Samsung's 7th Gen V-NAND flash, and it too is TLC. It packs 2 gigs of LPDDR4 DRAM cache, which helps the random performance. The endurance rating for this is 1200 TBW (terabytes written), which should be sufficient for most users. The Samsung 990 PRO is compatible with the PlayStation 5, but if you are going to use the 990 PRO on a PC, check out the Samsung Magician app that lets you track your drive's health, update its firmware, customize various settings, and more. The technical specs of the Samsung 990 PRO 2TB are given in the table below: Specification Value Form Factor M.2 2280 Interface PCIe Gen 4.0 x4, NVMe 2.0 NAND Flash Samsung V-NAND TLC Controller Samsung In-house Controller Cache Memory Samsung 2GB Low Power DDR4 SDRAM Sequential Read Speed Up to 7,450 MB/s Sequential Write Speed Up to 6,900 MB/s Random Read (4KB, QD32) Up to 1,400,000 IOPS Random Write (4KB, QD32) Up to 1,550,000 IOPS Random Read (4KB, QD1) Up to 22,000 IOPS Random Write (4KB, QD1) Up to 80,000 IOPS Operating Temperature 0°C to 70°C Reliability (MTBF) 1.5 Million Hours Endurance 1,200 TBW (Total Bytes Written) Get it at the link below: Samsung 990 PRO SSD 2TB NVMe SSD (MZ-V9P2T0B/AM): $369.99 (Sold and Shipped by Amazon US) Good to know This Amazon deal is U.S. specific, and not available in other regions unless specified. • Glad im on the right boat. Tidal has lots of issues in terms of app and music mix, its worst than spot but its honest. Spot algo is very tendentious and they pess less to artists, so im comfortable with the tidal errors, for now.
