Boo Berry
For the last week or so I've been noticing the default image for avatars seems to be broken; The URL: http://i2.wp.com/www.neowin.net/forum/public/style_images/ip.board-neowin/profile/default_large.png Upon trying to open it, you're met with the following message; We cannot complete this request, remote data was invalid Anyone else confirm? xendrome 1 Share
Nick H. Supervisor Posted December 26, 2014 Supervisor Share Posted December 26, 2014 I can confirm that clicking that link gives me the same error, but can you provide a screenshot of what you're seeing when the avatar is broken? We noticed this a while back but as far as I know DaveLegg fixed it.
Boo Berry
The arrow points to one on the forum index. This is Chrome with a clean cache - it happens in Firefox and Internet Explorer too with clean caches. From what I can tell, it looks like the default avatar URL is set to the following; http://i2.wp.com/www.neowin.net/forum/public/style_images/ip.board-neowin/profile/default_large.png Instead of the following URL, which is works fine; https://cdn.neowin.com/forum/uploads/style_images/ip.board-neowin/profile/default_large.png
+Red King Subscriber² Posted December 26, 2014 Subscriber² Share Posted December 26, 2014 I thought that default avatar 404s were due to social / ad block?

Boo Berry
FYI, this is still occurring. I've tested multiple browsers on Windows, Mac and Ubuntu (no ad blockers at all) and my phone using Chrome viewing the desktop site. The default avatar URL for whatever reason is set to http://i2.wp.com/www.neowin.net/forum/public/style_images/ip.board-neowin/profile/default_large.png instead of https://cdn.neowin.com/forum/uploads/style_images/ip.board-neowin/profile/default_large.png causing this to appear broken. Anyone should be able to reproduce it by clearing their browser cache and looking at posts where members have no avatar - in fact Alexander's post above me is using the broken URL. In Chrome it appears as a non-loaded image, in Firefox it's just blank (never loaded) and in Internet Explorer it appears as a broken picture image. I'm sure I can workaround this issue by using the HOSTS file, but this really should be looked into further. Aergan 1 Share

Mine shows from gravatar.com instead of wp.com... here the url that I am showing: http://www.gravatar.com/avatar/6343df50c4057e8fa8560dfea277466f?s=100&d=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.neowin.net%2Fforum%2Fpublic%2Fstyle_images%2Fip.board-neowin%2Fprofile%2Fdefault_large.png This is from Alexandar's avatar. His image is broken on my end. I don't see wp anywhere.

Boo Berry
And Safari on Mac - small image with question mark box. Mine shows from gravatar.com instead of wp.com... here the url that I am showing: Might be onto something there, AFAIK Gravatar is either part of or is affiliated with WordPress which is, I believe, the wp.com domain. Maybe its Gravatar/WP that's broken? Not sure.
Steven P. Administrators Posted January 13, 2015 Administrators Share Posted January 13, 2015 Having gravatars enabled broke it, so I have disabled it. I performed a google search for this bug and that is the only "fix" that appears to work.
LimeMaster
Only problem now is that some members avatars have defaulted to the generic placeholder one since you disabled gravatars.

LimeMaster
Awwwwww Don't worry, it's not too big of a problem as I'm sure those members will probably change their avatar back to the way it was.

FunkyMike
Hmm that is strange. I do recall my gravatar avatar being not available in the "round" placeholder on the front page when the new design went live. But I never experienced the bug that some are having now after it was fixed. Will Gravatar be back?
