I tested this three seperate occasions on clean SP-1 installations.

It's the only error I am getting, so I thought it deserved it's own thread.

(copied from MD351's post)

"...but i found a bug regarding the .NET Patch well 2 seperate errors but refers to the same thing.

1)

Some wierd error that only says ???? looks like something todo with the switches because it has /? /h /u /I

in the msg.

2)

I get an error while installing the patch for .NET, didnt happen in the last release....

"The Upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because the program to be upgraded maybe missing, or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have correct patch."

this error displays on the NDP1.1-KB824629-x86.exe"

BTW I don't get the second error message when the .NET Framework "update" is left unchecked.

Hmmm... we're looking into this, so far none of us have been able to duplicate it. How are you installing it? From CD? From Hard Drive? From Network? If possible, can I get a screenshot of the error?

EDIT - Here's something that looks like your issue, but it's for Server 2003... check it out... very odd: Q821156 - INFO: ASP.NET 1.1 June 2003 Hotfix Rollup Package

.NET Framework shoudln't be apart of the AutoPatcher Program.. its not like everyone needs it. Whether you have it or not does NOT change the stability or the patch level of your operating system. Any reputable developer will package the framework in their installation program for you and download and install it when deemed necessary.

Unless the following apply:

Are you a .NET Developer?

Are you a user who has .NET Enabled Applications?

Are you developing web services?

Having the .NET Framework install is of 0 use to you.

This goes back to my focus that APXP should make the app smaller and focus on whats required to keep a user safe and secure by a method thats much more convienant than microsofts is. If you don't have the .NET Framework installed your not any bit less secure. If you already have installed it then you ONLY need SP2. (1.0) Framework 1.1 is NOT backwards compliant with Framework 1.0 so if any developer writes an app in an older version or even a newer version of the framework you're still going to have to end up installing that one when necessary. It does not work like the Sun JVM Where you can download 1 version and have it work.

Adding the .NET Framework to the APXP Causes 20+ MB of extra space that really isn't necessary at all.

Getting this error when installing Decemeber release of AP.

Looks as if that file isn't even in that folder.. i had just installed that file this week, maybe an update needs to grab files form the installer or something. I wonder if putting hte DVDpack.msi in that folder will take are of the problem.

Well actually the file is there, it's just named something different (WindowsXPMediaPlayer9DVDPack.msi)... you could try renaming it and see what happens...

@xStainDx - True for the most part, but I know a number of things that require it be installed, and not come with it (one is a fave screensaver of mine)... I only included it because it's an update on Windows Update, and I know some things require it. But it's not the .Net framework that's the problem, it's the update... which is odd, the update didn't change the way it worked from the last one. :/

Whether everybody else needs it or not, I couldn't say. It's very important to me because it's the only pre-requesite for Powerquest's Drive Image 7. That doesn't mean I can't install it seperately, I was just hoping that it would be included so that when the CD Maker tool is ready and I make my WinXP Unattended CD-ROM with AutoPatcher included, that .NET Framework wouldn't be left out.

BTW I know MS has "renewed" the release of .NET Framework. I think with the most recent release, the update shouldn't be necessary.

In the APC file it refers to "WindowsXPMediaPlayer9DVDPack.msi" but that file isn't in that directory. In fact there's nothing with DVD in that directory for me. Same with "WM9Codecs.exe" and "WMP9-MP3Encoding.reg"

Dazzla, are you saying that under AutoPatcher XP\ProgFiles you don't have WindowsXPMediaPlayer9DVDPack.msi, WM9Codecs.exe, or WMP9-MP3Encoding.reg?

EDIT - Like this below:

That is the version that is in AP.

Hmmm... wait... may be onto something here... do you know for sure, if that release of the .Net framework doesn't need the patch? If so, that would totally explain the error.... hmmm....

checked december update files before applying updated and noticed it had

WindowsXPMediaPlayer9DVDPack.msi , WM9Codecs.exe , WMP9-MP3Encoding.reg , WMP9TweakMP.EXE

so i ran Updater.exe to pointed it to AutoPatcher_XP.exe

updated successfully but now i dont see WindowsXPMediaPlayer9DVDPack.msi , WM9Codecs.exe , WMP9-MP3Encoding.reg , WMP9TweakMP.EXE

could be other files missing..

odd.. any md5 on program files to see what else might be missing?

Hmmm... the updater should transfer them over to "AutoPatcher XP\ProgFiles"... I've had no issues, but apparently it's possible for the Updater to miss it. Try running it again. As far as the MD5, I'll try to get you one here soon. :)

tried it for 3rd time. same thing..

checked to compared extracted december updated files to those that folder with successfully applied december updated and noticed

StartupCPL.lnk

StartupCPL.exe

StartupMonitor.msi

StopAVIPreview.reg

TARGET.INF

TurnOnNumLock.reg

WMP9TweakMP.EXE

ProgFiles\aspi

ProgFiles\VBLIBS

all missing

guess is stops at startupcpl.ink somehow

FlishFun, could you could make a addon/tool to remove the .NET stuff from the setup if there is away to do that?...

oh and thanx ITinerant, for posting that :)

Probably, you can do it yourself, too... just edit the database and remove it. :)

@blue baby boo - Let me check it... take me through the steps of you updating... is it from one place on your HDD to another? And it's not write protected, right?

EDIT - Also, I was looking... if those are the files that aren't copying, the line of code that's messed up would be this:

XCOPY "%APUpd%\December\AutoPatcher XP" "%AutoPatcherXP_Dir%" /S /E /Y

But yet the ones around it would be working... using similar commands... odd indeed... :/

extracted AutoPatcherXP_Nov.exe to D:\AutoPatcherXP\

extracted AP_Dec_Update.exe to D:\AutoPatcherXP\

run D:\AutoPatcherXP\Upgrade Release\Updater.exe

pointed it to D:\AutoPatcherXP\AutoPatcher_XP_4.0_Final\AutoPatcher_XP.exe

completed and pops up saying Successfully updated

also tried extracting full install and update in 2 diff folders.. and maybe renaming but results are the same

Try this... after putting the Nov release in that folder, try running it (just get to the part where you'd normally install and hit Exit) then try to update... call me kooky, but it may work.

@heslo - I'll mention that to Raptor. :)

Yes, this .NET Framework doesn't need the update patch. I've been installing it seperately since before (and after) I found AutoPatcher. Never shows up on Windows Update once installed.

BTW This thread is kinda confusing with different issues being discussed.

Well actually it's only 3 issues... and if you're right, that would explain the error... I'll have to do some testing. :D So that may mean one down... and two to go. I may have figured out the other two as well, still looking into them. ;)

flish I got this error just after getting the ??????? error.

Thought you might want to take a look at it.

I'm thinking it may be the version of the .Net framework I included doesn't need that patch anymore... if so, then it will be removed from the Jan update, and just uncheck it and hit "Save as Default". :)

    • "This transition will take several years so we shouldn't bother doing it at all" is a naive take. This is completely normal for all specifications that cross-cut software, hardware and multiple industries. Look at the PCI specification for another example, consumers barely have PCI-E 5 yet PCI-SIG is working on PCI-E 8. AV2 will take multiple years to get adoption and even then, even a decade from now people will still have older hardware that doesn't support it. That's fine, because the savings still add up as newer devices add the hardware to deal with it. The goal is never to get 100% on the new spec overnight, but to gradually adopt it.
