William Hill or those working on behalf often use less than savoury methods to promote their services, sadly they pay so advertisers will continue to take their money and we will continue to be pushed popup or multi window opening ads.

My mobile website (Safari, iOS, iPhone) session expired and refresh of the main page had me as not logged in. Pretty much immediately, I was redirected to a betting company app (screenshot below).

Please remove the offending ad as I believe it had no place on a tech news site.

I quite agree. I always block the sort of ads that are totally irrelevant to the website's main content. Meanwhile, any adverts

that promote the utterly immoral and evil gambling industry gets blocked regardless of the website it's displayed on.

See, I never used to block adverts.  Neowin (and the other sites I visit regularly) tend to have sensible attitudes towards advert placement, so I shan't bite the hand that feeds.

But one like this slips through, and it makes me think about no longer whitelisting this site.  Which is a shame, as it's rare - and the target of my disdain is not Neowin but rather the advertisers.

I reported it, but I am a bit wary of this. Our new ad provider (live since around 20 hours ago) assures me that redirects are not possible without clicking/tapping on the ad. I also opted out of gambling related ads :s

And Nik, I get you, but it's a battle to find the correct balance of having enough revenue to properly run this site and pay everyone, and have ads that don't **** people off too much :p

Of course it is, I agree.  I have not removed neowin from my whitelist, because (as I say) I don't bite the hand that feeds.  Coming from the other side of the coin - I've worked with advertising buyers before - absolutely some of the least pleasant people I've ever encountered.

I was browsing Neowin on iPad a few days ago and I was completely redirected off Neowin to a full page ad, it was late so i didn't bother investigating but yeah... it happened.

Yeah, that advertiser was removed on Monday.

Well that is definitely not working as it should be. I just logged out on the mobile site on my iPhone, refreshed the main page and this beauty appeared.

Yes, I do have a beautiful left hand :)

Funnily enough I was just going to report this - I just got booted from the homepage (iOS) to Candy Crush Saga in the app store from an add in the same position as the paddy power one (which I've also seen).

There were definitely no clicks involved unless my phone has a ghost!

Hi there!

I reported this issue here at the end of last year: https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1240874-constant-redirect-to-spam-ad-using-mobile-website/

Since then, things went smoothly. But yesterday it started again and today every single article that I opened on my phone either redirected me to a spam-ad (without an option to return to the original site) or opened up the App Store on my phone trying to make me download some crapware.

Seriously guys, this is really annoying. Please do something about it.

Thanks in advance!

Best regards,

VSG

Thanks! I have had to leave the ad enabled so that the advertiser can debug it, but they are doing so right now with all this info from the thread.

This really sucks and I hope they can remove the people embedding these URLs.

Another one redirected me to Yelp's app on iOS App Store without any explicit tapping. Even when logged in.

More shenanigans.

1. This one randomly redirected but didn't actually load anything.

2. And there is still this gambling ad present.

that leads to

One domain responsible for ads using redirects has been blocked which is: cpactions.com (but this doesn't necessarily mean that is the redirection domain, just the advertiser that was blocked) I will report these other ones too, and I have asked about their policy on this sort oif thing because surely it can't be allowed!

I was also told we were opted out of gambling type ads, but I will follow up on this new report.

Sorry Steve, but this is really taking the p***. Open a story, get redirected to App Store, tap back to go back to the story, it loads and I get redirected again. WTF?!

Here are some additional URLs for you to investigate:

At this point, I am almost ready to be done with Neowin on mobile. This is the worst it has been for some time. I'm sure that you would like me to subscribe, but this is the wrong way to go about persuading.

EDIT: A couple more images with URLs:

By the way, I saw another gambling ad on the main page yesterday morning. It was for Ladbrokes. I can upload the screenshot and link to which it led later, if you would like. Bottom line is that they keep slipping through.

On mobile? I will need a bit more info to be able to report it.,

Yes, on mobile. Here is the image:

A couple more bad ads. There really needs to be a facility on the mobile site where I can upload a screenshot and a URL to in order to report such ads. Is doing so particularly difficult? Also, can you not block certain ads based on their URLs? Mischievous domains are clearly visible in the code...

    • AI is the justification that company administrators use to lay people off; it is not the end all, be all touted in the media (many of whom can't tell a microchip from a potato chip). Greed is main driving factor behind its adoption; the other is remaining relevant in the face of competition from other entities.
    • Firefox 152.0.2 is out with fixes for performance, translation, and cloud storage services by Taras Buria A new bug-fixing update is now rolling out to Firefox users in the Release Channel. Less than a week ago, Mozilla fixed crashes on Intel Raptor Lake processors with version 152.0.1. Now, Mozilla has prepared yet another set of fixes that address problems with localization, playback issues of certain MP4 files, and performance issues on website that perform various encryption operations at once. Here is the full changelog: Firefox 152.0.2 is now available for download from Mozilla's FTP. Existing installations will get the update over the next several hours. The latest version will also be available soon on the official website, the Microsoft Store, and Neowin's Software page. You can find Firefox 152.0.2 release notes in the official documentation. In case you missed it, Mozilla released Firefox 152 earlier this month. The latest feature update brought reworked settings with a more streamlined user interface, JPEG XL support, new features for Private mode, a new way to mute a tab (just type "mute" in the address bar), and many more. You can find the complete changelog here. In other Firefox news, Mozilla recently published its roadmap, where the company detailed the upcoming Nova redesign and other features it plans to implement. Mozilla wants to make the new user interface easier to navigate and more modern, with a heavy focus on its privacy tools, such as its built-in VPN. If you are curious, you can already enable the new UI as described here.
