"system refresh"= epic fail=HELP...!

Recommended Posts

So, here it is. I've changed motherboards recently, and things got a little messed, with the computer not booting etc. Tried a few of the obvious things first, but to no avail. Even system restore failed, as it claimed there were no saved things, despite the fact that I had recently used it.

So, I used that system refresh, that one that claimed it keeps your files & settings.....

I kept freakin nothing.

PLEASE tell me there is a way to reverse this mess, and I promise I'll never do that again.....

Did you change mainboards, or switch in a similar board? Did you change processors?

A mainboard change would pretty much require a clean install. System recovery isn't going to work here, because the machine isn't loading the correct drivers.

There must be a way to undo what I just did, that's all I'm asking for.

Well, at this point, I'm inclined to say no. Your original post is missing some information. Did you switch out your board for a similar model, or a completely different board? Did you change processors?

Maybe someone else will have another idea. Do you have another system available to see if you can recover your data off this system's drive?

No, it's not the drive, the drive is fine. And it is, of course, normally quite easy to swap out a motherboard without doing a fresh install. I created my own situation by trying to use a shortcut, system refresh, instead of doing it manually. A mistake I will NEVER make again.

Yes, I see the stuff there, but nothing actually comes back. I guess I'm gonna have to rebuild everything from scratch.

This is really my own damn fault, as I surely knew better. In what twisted universe is years upon years upon years of emails, email addys, bookmarks etc NOT personal files...???

Unless they are saved to the HDD in a personal system folder (Documents, for example), they are not going to be saved. Most browsers force you to manually backup bookmarks. The OS has no means of interfacing with the browser or email client (especially third party) to back those up.

In theory, emails should be backed up online if you're using Exchange, or Google.

don't panic,  it's very easy to fix this, go to the C:\windows.old\Users\<your username> and copy everything, including the hidden appdata folder to C:\Users\<your username>  Reboot and all your documents and settings will be back.  You'll have to reinstall all programs like office, chrome etc but all there settings will be the same as before

See if this tool still works.

If the refresh finds files with bad permissions, etc. it will move them to Windows.old. Sometimes they are hidden and/or assigned to SYSTEM as owner.

Whoa, that actually did help...!! Thanks..!!

It restored most of the contents of my "C" drive.

What it didn't restore was the contents of thunderbird or my mozilla bookmarks.

I do have some backups of those, however, and even if they are a bit old, I should be able to start there.

Thanks.

Just FYI for the next time...

When you plan on keeping your OS install after swapping major parts like a motherboard, you can either :

- preinstall the new drivers with the pnputil command BEFORE swapping parts (planned change)

- modify your installation while offline with a WinPE bootable USB stick or Windows DVD (repair console) and inject the drivers with the DISM command and registry manipulation of storage drivers service startup (unplanned change after a component failure) http://www.dowdandassociates.com/blog/content/howto-repair-windows-7-install-after-replacing-motherboard/

Your machine failed to boot most likely because it failed to find the boot drive because either the SATA mode wasn't the same (legacy vs AHCI vs RAID) and therefore the driver wasn't loaded (this can be changed via a bios setting) or because the chipset was completely different and required a totally different driver.

System Refresh is a system restoration only, it isn't supposed to touch user files, and cannot cope with a motherboard change (it's not a cloning utility)

No, actually it booted fine, at first. It was after installing latest amd catalyst chipset drivers that the trouble started. After they started, I was able to get in via the cd/repair start option.

I have managed to restore most of the important, thanks to Eric's link, and some backup file I had using mozbackup.

Thanks all.

If you had more than one user profile you will need to run that on each one. It only restores the logged-in user's files. Sorry you lost some stuff, it's happened to me quite a few times. :/

Actually by now, I have managed to restore ALL the important stuff right "up to date", fortunately.

True, all my installed programs are uninstalled, but most of those fall into the "so what, I can just reinstall them" category. Thus, I feel much better than I did this morning.

Thanks again.

Lets all not forget the amazing sysprep command. Probably to late for it now, but if you run it before you install the new board it will generalize your install so it will run on the new motherbard.

Hahaha, the sysprep tool you only discovered a little while ago? LoL, that tool has been part of my life for years as a system builder. Rikkins, a little tip for next time. Keep backups of important stuff on an external before doing ANYTHING destructive. I nearly lost 2TB worth of stuff when I re-installed Mac OS on my girlfriend's Mac Pro server, and forgot my archive drive was in there. It wiped the MFT out and I had to raw recover every sector, lucky I stopped it before any bad damage was done.

Even make system images using TrueImage or Ghost, or linux based CloneZilla. It might take a while, but if everything goes wrong you won't have lost anything :) Backup, backup backup, and THEN use sysprep ;)

I've managed to swap boards before. It sounds like you're having an issue with your hard drives, or something physical. Try swapping to a blank drive and installer.

So, as it turns out, it most certainly was my trusty wd black hard drive.(just out of warranty too)

After seemingly working fine for the rest of the day yesterday, and restarting perfectly a dozen times or so, I installed some drivers for my x-fi, rebooted, and bupkus....and no amount of cajoling brought it back to boot. I am able to read it however, using my son's computer, so there is some hope for recovery....

Hmmm, new drive needs a sata driver before it will install, and the ones I've downloaded don't seem to be correct.

Any idea where these things may be hiding...???

Thanks

By chance are you using a USB drive to install? Make sure you aren't plugging into a USB 3.0 port, I too would receive the message asking for drivers because it couldn't find my USB stick once the setup started because it didn't have native 3.0 drivers on the disc.

    • TeraCopy 4.0 Build 28 by Razvan Serea TeraCopy is a compact program designed to copy and move files at the maximum possible speed, also providing you with a lot of features. Copy files faster. TeraCopy uses dynamically adjusted buffers to reduce seek times. Asynchronous copy speeds up file transfer between two physical hard drives. Pause and resume transfers. Pause copy process at any time to free up system resources and continue with a single click. Error recovery. In case of copy error, TeraCopy will try several times and in the worse case just skips the file, not terminating the entire transfer. Interactive file list. TeraCopy shows failed file transfers and lets you fix the problem and recopy only problem files. Shell integration. TeraCopy can completely replace Explorer copy and move functions, allowing you work with files as usual. TeraCopy is free for non-commercial use only. For commercial use you need to buy a license. The paid version of the program includes the following features: Copy/move to your favorite folders. Save reports as HTML and CSV files. Select files with the same extension/folder. Remove the selected files from the copy queue. Features added since version 3.17: Enhanced speed graph. New multi-threaded copy engine. Support for copying to multiple targets. Queue system for managing multiple copy operations. Support for receiving files via the LocalSend protocol. TeraCopy entry in the modern Windows Explorer context menu. Integrated toolbar in the title bar. Why receive LocalSend transfers with TeraCopy? Handle file conflicts: Skip, overwrite, or rename files when a file with the same name already exists. LocalSend always creates another copy, which can waste time and disk space, especially when resuming an interrupted transfer. Filter unwanted files: Apply ignore lists or remove files manually before accepting a transfer, so unnecessary files are not downloaded. Better performance on fast networks: In tests over a 10 Gbps connection, TeraCopy received files several times faster than the standard LocalSend app on Windows. TeraCopy 4.0 Build 28 changelog: Fixed a bug where Overwrite behaved as Overwrite All during same-drive move operations. AdvancedInstaller fixed the installer’s security vulnerability: EXE Bootstrapper resolved the %appdata% location incorrectly for the System account. • New AMD graphics driver fixes install issues and FSR 4.1 crashes on RX 7000 GPUs by Taras Buria AMD is rolling out yet another graphics driver. Version 26.6.4 is now available for download, bringing two important fixes. One is for those still using Windows 10 and having trouble installing driver 26.6.2. In fact, this patch is coming from the recently released hotfix, so it is not new if you are already running version 26.6.3. The second fix is for RX 7000 owners. AMD recently brought FSR 4.1 support to the previous-gen graphics cards, but there was a bug with certain games crashing when using FSR 4.1. I experienced this issue with Forza Horizon 6, so today's driver should take care of that. Here is the official changelog: Intermittent install issue seen when installing AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.6.2 on Windows® 10 systems for Radeon™ RX 7000 series and above graphics products. Intermittent application crash may be observed in some games with AMD FSR Upscaling 4.1 enabled on Radeon™ RX 7000 series graphics products. Known issues include the following: Intermittent application crash or driver timeout may be observed while playing Battlefield™ 6 on AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370. AMD is actively working on a resolution with the developer to be released as soon as possible. Texture flickering or corruption may appear while playing Battlefield™ 6 with AMD Record and Stream on some AMD graphics products. AMD FSR Upscaling and AMD FSR Frame Generation may show as inactive in AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition while playing Battlefield™ 6 when enabled on Radeon™ RX 9000 series graphics products. Failure to install may be observed while installing AI Bundle components in some regions with limited access to HuggingFace and GitHub. Model flickering or rendering failure may be observed in Maxon Cinema 4D and Blender on Radeon™ RX 7000 series and above graphics products. Users experiencing this issue are recommended to install AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.3.1. Intermittent application crash may be observed on some models while running Blender on Radeon™ RX 7000 series and above graphics products. Users experiencing this issue are recommended to install AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.3.1. You can download the AMD Radeon driver 26.6.4 from the official website here. • Amazon may use OpenAI and Nova models after Anthropic reportedly raises costs by Karthik Mudaliar Amazon is reportedly considering to use OpenAI models and even its own Nova family of AI models after Anthropic raised the cost of using Claude inside Amazon services. According to a report from The Information, Amazon is weighing its options to reduce costs under a new arrangement with Anthropic. But back in April, Amazon said it would invest $5 billion more in Anthropic, with the possibility of adding up to another $20 billion if certain commercial milestones are met. That investment actually came on top of another $8 billion Amazon had already put into the Claude maker. Anthropic, meanwhile, committed to spend more than $100 billion over 10 years on AWS technologies, including Amazon’s Trainium chips. Amazon isn't just a customer of Anthropic but also one of the most important backers and cloud partners. This is why it makes it interesting that Amazon is considering other alternatives to handle its internal workloads. Although Amazon has been building its own options for a while now. Its Nova family of AI models was announced in late 2024 for Amazon Bedrock, with models aimed at text, image, and video tasks. Amazon pitched the model around cost and latency at that time. With that said, OpenAI has also become a more realistic option recently for AWS customers as well as for Amazon itself. Earlier this year, OpenAI brought its latest models and Codex coding agent to Amazon Bedrock, after changes to its previously more restrictive Microsoft cloud arrangement. This allowed AWS to serve even those customers who wanted other alternatives from Claude, without having to move workloads out of Amazon's cloud. Evaluating alternatives could also be due to commercial pressure and not necessarily a sign of a damaged partnership between Amazon and Anthropic. Whether or not Amazon is actually considering switching entirely to OpenAI's models or its own Nova models remains unknown at this moment.
