This "Forced Updates for Windows 10 Home" thing has to stop!

I'm running windows 10 pro and I don't see an option in windows update settings to choose which updates.  Maybe this policy applies to W10 Pro as well?

There are some issues around this, i think it will back fire on MS, cause 1 wrong update and people machines are not working, WHO pays to get it fixed! 

 

People keep forgetting that MS is continuing the fast and slow rings, so updates/patches will be tested by those before they get pushed out to the general public.

So they will be tested on a lot more configurations compared to before.

 

It should only get better now

No. Im sure they have it set this way for the TP. RTM should be different.

This is a fallacy.  If the fast and slow rings are so bulletproof, then I wouldn't have received an intel graphics driver update that left me with nothing but a black screen on boot, forcing me to restore.

Are you blaming Microsoft for an Intel driver issue?

 

Correct me if I am wrong, but Windows 10 is still a TP too. Which means you are an Insider if you are running it.  You are confusing. DId you report it? I bet not.

 

Presently, neither the fast nor slow rings have been used to test any Windows Update.

why don't we just have one darn version already...... OSX is only one version for home and business... all we need is "Windows" and "Windows Server" that is it, stop making it a edition nightmare that you have to figure out what features come with what edition (ex: bitlocker in windows 7 was only on enterprise and ultimate, yet pro could of used it at the time, only to show up in windows 8 at the pro level)

It only showed up in 8 Pro because the Ultimate version was retired.

 

I agree though, there are too many skus. They should leave Enterprise and kill off the rest.

 

Server will need to remain, because unlike OS X, it isn't just an installable package.

I did read something about this that made this somewhat more bearable for me. 

While we won't be able to choose what "bits" of automatic updates will be applied, (we have to receive all of them), we DO have a choice as to WHEN they are applied. They will give us an option to wait for a reasonable period of time before actually applying them. 

This is fine for me because I like to wait a week before applying updates to see if other people are having trouble with them. 

I also discovered when I got the buggy telemetry update that they can "pull" updates that are hidden. I hid the original, buggy telemetry update and when they came out with it's replacement the original, hidden update went away.

I am not sure where many of you are getting your info from, but from everything I have read from Microsoft, having a Pro version of Windows 10 will not enable you to choose whether or not to install updates, it will only give you the option of deferring an update.

 

Windows 10 home is CB (current branch), windows 10 Pro is CBB (current business branch). CBB does not let you defer indefinitely, only enables you to defer for a period of time..

 

And yes, I am against auto updating of drivers. I have had instances where core software I use (and why I have a windows machine at all) has become broken with certain drivers, not to mention for example the windows update of my nvidia drivers installs all components - some of which - the 3d vision / stereo drivers - I have no use for and in fact have caused issues at times..

 

Unless you want to go for volume licensing via the Enterprise Branch of Windows 10, (say buy 10 or 50 copies of Windows 10) you will be forced to always eventually install ALL updates. No exceptions. That is how it stands at the moment, and unless microsoft change this, I will not be upgrading. My second computer is also a dedicated DAW, and it does not benefit in any way from having updates being installed at times when I need to use it as a audio recording DAW.. the audio glitches that would occur because of this means that it would no longer be useful for what I have built it for..
