I created an ISO from the install file and didn't enter a product key during installation. I then went to activate windows and there was an option to change product key or go to the store. So I went to the store and it said I could buy Windows 10 for $2 ... so for chuckles I put it on my credit card because it was only $2. I then went back it said it was successful and Windows 10 pro was now activated.

Hmm... So I backed up the product key, I wonder if it will work on a clean install and activate after the RTM drops.

So I did it on my other Windows 10 Machine, and after it activated I used a product key finder and it matched the other machine.

So can someone else try it and see if they give you a product key ending with 7XM87

Likely the PID generated that activated your build won't work on RTM, they change the generation of codes.

Edit: I'm pretty sure this exact thing happened back with Windows 8.0 before RTM. Where it would take you to a page and activate etc but they keys didn't work on RTM.

It appears the key I got from them is a Generic key install key. After searching the net. Wondering if a different product key will drop later on, or if it will still activate ..hmmm.

It sends you a confirmation email, but does not show up on your order history (at least not at the moment)

So for kicks i'm now reinstalling and logging in with my live account. Gonna see if it automatically activates, and if it does which product key it's going to hand out to me.

Probably the same generic, but we shall see.

It did automatically Activate Windows 10 Pro once I signed into my Live account, but it gave me the same generic Key.

Darn, that would have been awesome had it worked.  I am not surprised it auto activated as all installs seem to do that.

Now it's showing up on my order history. Yep I paid $2 on 3 machines. I figure, ya probably a fluke... but if on the small chance they honor it, why not do it on 3 machines, it's only $6

So does mine.

Not uh.

Ya but everyone's activates and gets a generic key on the preview builds. I'm wondering how it will be treated on my Microsoft account with the RTM build. Probably won't work, but I Figure, worth a shot.

It wouldn't surprise me that the generic key is the install key and the actual activation is tied via hardware id and your live account.  When you try to activate, it probably checks to see if your live account is provisioned for it.

and maybe... and this is a pretty large maybe.... it will be when it reaches RTM.

It has already been discussed at MyDigitalLife forums. The key purchasing system is currently being tested and is not yet ready to deliver legit keys. Your first warning should have been that the key you got was generic but no you didn't stopped until you bought 2 more :p

These keys won't activate when you install RTM (since these will be actually be verified by MS servers. And MS servers will think you are using generic keys so no chance of activation)

I think that it most likely will.

I was uh...playing around the other day and accidentally deleted my product key out of the system and it remained activated.

    • Here's how to watch the Xbox Games Showcase today and what to expect by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe The June games showcase week has been a packed one, with everything from major presentations like Sony and Summer Game Fest to indie-focused reveals coming in almost every day. Now, it's almost time for another big one, with Microsoft bringing its Xbox Games Showcase back later today. This is a double feature too, with a Gears of War E-Day deep dive also being attached to it. For anyone wanting to tune in online, the 2026 Xbox Games Showcase is kicking off at 10 AM PT | 1 PM ET | 6 PM BST | 7 PM CEST later today, June 7. The event will be available to watch on the official Xbox YouTube (4K 60FPS), Twitch, Facebook, Steam, Amazon Live, and other portals. Separate livestreams for American Sign Language and Audio Description will also be available. "This year marks 25 years of XBOX, and this Showcase is poised to be a true celebration, offering world premieres, new gameplay, fresh updates, and more for a swathe of projects we cannot wait to share," said Microsoft about this presentation. With a new CEO behind it that is pulling off some interesting moves, Xbox may have some surprises to reveal today. New looks at first-party games like Halo Campaign Evolved from Halo studios, Fable from Playground Games, InXile Entertainment's Clockwork Revolution, Mojang's Minecraft Dungeons II, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 from Infinity Ward are to be expected here. We may finally get to see the new Blade from Arcane Studios in action and a new Persona game from Atlus at the showcase too. Surprise announcements may also arrive from other Microsoft-owned studios like Bethesda, MachineGames, Ninja Theory, Obsidian, Rare, World's Edge, or Blizzard. Considering how every new release nowadays is staying away from November and December to avoid Grand Theft Auto VI's release, any launch dates Microsoft announces will probably skip those months as well. Once the Xbox Games Showcase ends, Microsoft will immediately kick off the Gears of War: E-Day Direct. This deep dive into the upcoming prequel from The Coalition should attach gameplay footage and perhaps a release window to the highly anticipated project.
    • People in the '50s and '60s had the same attitude, and we're still here over a half century later.
    • So after some fiddling I was able to get it to run at a pretty stable 30FPS. I'm slightly surprised about how much fiddling I had to do to get there though given what I thought was reasonable hardware: Processors: 16 × AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS w/ Radeon 780M Graphics Memory: 16 GiB of RAM Graphics Processor 1: AMD Radeon 780M Graphics Graphics Processor 2: AMD Radeon RX 7700S I think I could do it better if I use Linux rather than Windows, Windows RAM usage is stupid without stripping the system down. But once I got it working in a reasonable state, it was so awesome! I felt like a new Bond! If anyone has any advice to get things going a bit smoother FPS-wise, I'd appreciate it.
